My S wants nothing to do with college visits… ever! So I think it’s going to be a “kicking and screaming” thing. LOL. Hoping something will pique his interest at some point.

S doesn’t want to go on college trips just yet - but since he’s away at boarding school, we are going to try and schedule some visits this summer. He’s headed to Italy during spring break - effectively nixing any plans for college trips then! He did visit several colleges when we did the rounds with D (class of 2011) and he absolutely loved the visits. This is one kid who probably could remember more than we can from all those visits. Thanks to that, he does have a reasonable idea of what kind of a school he would like!

We did talk to the dean about classes for junior year. Scheduling info comes out next week - but it looks like he will be taking APUSH, AP Physics/AP Calc (it’s a new combo class they are trying out) and French 3. With the APUSH, they can also take the AP Lit test I believe. It’s going to be interesting - a heavy load to take. We need to see how he can manage!

I don’t want to think about junior year yet…I’m trying to get accustomed to watching him go through Sophomore year! did you all pick up my wording…my trying to WATCH him…yup, it’s my new mantra…I’m no longer in that drivers seat…I’m just trying to be a “guide”…or backseat driver? he’s not listening too well…although he did shovel this morning when asked! :)

Amen!!! I swore sometimes I’m dealing with a toddler again–but at least with a toddler you could use time out!
Then he does the strangest thing like hugs me for no reason
I think they are slowly starting to find their way we just need to keep the road clear of to many potholes.

snow drifts, at this point, pot holes, later in the spring!! :))
not sure it is that funny…but, I wanted to try out a new smiley icon!!

I love the new faces too
Looks like snow piles ahead–5-9 inches by morning.
Now to get my so do what dr123mom’s son did; use a shovel --I think I’ll introduce the concept on the drive home today to my son. [-O<

we’re going to have snow…5-8. and then ICE…yuk and yikes!!! how frustrating! I want spring!!

No school here! I just hope today he uses his time to review for the math test that was suppose to be today, and now will be tomorrow. My biggest goal today is to plow us out of the driveway then hopefully be able to get to our main road that probably won’t be plowed. 8-|

First post. My daughter attends a very competitive public high school in southern CA. No PSAT yet, and the only AP available to sophomores is AP euro which she did not take. We are hoping to visit some schools this summer but it’s hard to plan without any test scores. Next year my D plans to take precalc, AP chem, AP English Lang, Spanish 3 & regular US history. She is more of a science and math person, with history probably being her worst subject, and she gets good grades but has to work very hard for them. Right now she only knows that she wants to go to a school that is larger than her high school (about 2000). I am wondering about the sat subject tests, should she take the chemistry one after completing chem this year or should she wait until after AP chem? Same with math, should she take math 1 before or after taking precalc? What do most people do to study for these tests? Thanks for your thoughts on this!

welcome bcooperlaw! I would suggest that your D take the subject test for chemistry only after AP Chem. Same with the Math. Only some of the selective schools require subject tests and most of them also require just two tests. Sat II (subject) tests are not really required at most other schools.

@bcooperlaw - for SAT subject tests, I recommend taking them in the May of the AP year for any class where there is appropriate overlap. The chem in particular has a disparate set of topics so she should also get a book of practice tests so she will see what’s on it. For instance, they have a section on some [IMO obsolete] glassware names, which most HS courses will not cover completely. They also have full sections on kinetics, thermodynamics, gas laws, only some of which is covered in a usual Honors course and the rest comes in AP. If your daughter is talented in math, she should skip Math-I altogether and just take Math-II after precalculus. You can get tutoring if needed for these tests (use word of mouth from other parents) but I’m just having my son do practice tests. (OTOH I am a teacher/tutor of these subjects, so that’s possibly a special case. I keep telling him that my nagging is worth $100+ per hour but he doesn’t believe me LOL)

I would agree, the Subject tests should be done after the AP or Honors class which is “the last class” your kid will take before senior year…on the other hand, if he/she is not taking any further advanced class, then take the subject test as “close to” the last class as possible…so it is fresh in the kid’s mind…does that make sense? I do think most schools don’t require them, and those that do, want two different subjects, so NOT Math I and Math II (my DD’13 made that mistake) and then had to “find” another subject to study…and take in the fall of senior year…which messed up her ability to apply early decision to a school because the grade wouldn’t be back in time…

People are in an unroar around here since we took two ice days (dont see snow) and one of the make days is memorial day.

Well I have been proven wrong—
I didn’t think it was possible to look at a book for over 4 hours and not have it magically open to the section you were suppose to be studying b-(
NO MORE SNOW DAYS!!!
They have cause this DS to have develop some very bad study habits.

@fretfulmother I’m going to have to try that. There’s a booming business for tutors and college coaches in my area so I should remind my kids they are lucky to get such services for free.

@drmom123 yeah, we didn’t plan the timing of those subject tests properly either with S14. I swear, we’ll finally know what we are doing with S16. Of course, he’s not exactly on board to do his part with gpa and ECs so it is still an uphill battle.

I’m traveling in a warmer place right now (NC) so I am missing our ice day back home. This is one year I would love to have the days off.

Cold here–but school is in. We get 3 quarter mid-term reports today or Monday.
Ask my son how do they look ? " well, we will know when I see them." :-SS
I really can’t wait until this school year ends.
Then again it means my Baby will be on step closer to leaving home. I know if its not really broke don’t fix it.

midterms done…DS very upset over some of the grades he got. He has not quite figured out that you cannot just study a few hours the day or night before the exam and expect to do that much better than you usually do…he didn’t do poorly…but, nothing that really “helps” him… I’m beginning to wonder if a college visit to a “basic” school, you know, nothing “fancy”, but a school to get him interested…?? and motivated???

My S had a 3.3 GPA at end of 9th grade. I told him he better pull up the GPA this year ( 10th) if he wants to major in Computer Science and get into a good school. I also bribed him by saying I’d give him $25 if he makes honor roll Well, he did make honor roll so guess I am out the $25! He seems to be doing much better this school year. I talk with him frequently about colleges and we will visit a few in April. When my D was a HS sophomore we also visited colleges. I feel it helps them understand more what admissions is looking for early in the game. He’s also taking a Web Design certificate program at a community college. Next year as a junior should be interesting.

my DS said “I know what I have to do…kids who get all A’s study till 2 in the morning…I don’t want to do that…!” I wanted to say “just study till 11pm and you’ll do better”…but the timing wasn’t right…
yeah, I’ll find a college to take him to…

Drmom123 when you find that school let me know–because our two can be room mates.
His semester was a 3.28 a big drop from a cum of 3.67 from his freshman year.
He just not interested in his classes. The boy loves to read just not his text books.
