what exactly is this HOBY thing???

It is 3 days leadership conference some time in May. Google it. Every school in a country can nominate one sophomore and one alternative as ambassador. Since it is somewhat selective it is viewed favorable by colleges.

ahhhhhhh okay.

sooooooā¦anyone beginning to get nervous about where your kid is going to āend upā? I am just working myself into a frenzyā¦and I donāt even have real āgradesā or numbers yet!!!

Gradesāmantra āthis too shall pass,ā. His most recent remark " Iāll be busy the next three weeks, because the quarter ends."
He could have been busy for the past three weeksā¦ /

Thanks so much for the heads-up on HOBY. I had been aimlessly casting about for some kind of leadership training experience just like this for the DD ā long weekend, conference with other interested kids, affordable. This is perfect and her school plans to sign her up for the state Leadership Conference. She canāt do or pay for the week-long World conference. These are only for sophomores. The Leadership Seminar (long weekend) is $195 and she expects to fundraise for it. Weāll fill any gap. One thrilled kid, I tell ya. Endless thanks. CCC people are so smart & plugged in!

Just quick check in DS just informed us that college debt is not good---- so maybe he should consider other ways to pay for it.
Maybe, the brain cells are kicking in or maybe itās a revelation that has come to him in a dream.
Mid quarter grades prove it must have been a dream

^ Good thinking.

I would be wary of kids coming back later and claiming ādebt not goodā = āwonāt attend collegeā :D

My kid still thinks money grows on treesā¦

Going to this dear child first college fair. I gave him the list to look at and ask him to pick out some schools that might interest him.
Iām hoping this lights a fireā¦
He also goes on his school bus trip in a couple weeks where they take them to a large university and a small oneā¦so they can start thinking about what size and different locations they may want in a school.
This help my daughter last year with planting a seed that high school does not continue on foreverā¦

My kid is so āeasy.ā Her first college fair and sheās decided sheās going to attend one of the colleges there. But there are 13 more on my list for her, and many months before graduation.

We talked of going on a college visit trip in the summer. But for right now, S is busy with the end of third term. Keeping my fingers crossed - hoping he is doing well (the midterm grades were not too great!). I am sure heās looking forward to the spring break trip in Italy ā¦

Anyone elseās kid taking AIME tomorrow? If so, good luck!

I gave myself a CC break because it was sort of making me anxious (not this forum), but I wanted to pop in and see how all the folks on this thread were doing.

Third quarter grades will be posted by Monday and he NOW thinks its time to get serious.
Went to a college fair with him and I think it might have shook some sense into him and what it takes to get into the schools that interest him.
@piesquared agree with you about getting Overwhelm sometimes on these sites.
Not many in this group yet but the ones in this group seems to be more low key, with a nice sense of humor which I think will keep us sane going through this process

I had a talk with my son last night. Actually, I talked and he tried to walk away. The bottom line of it all is that I told him that if he plans on going away to college, then he needs to start turning in his work on time with no nagging from me. Otherwise, he may be lucky to go to community college and live with us. Spring break starts at the end of the day today, we will see if anything sunk in starting after break.

@piesquared Yes! My DS1 is taking it today. I figure this is his best chance of making it to the next level, i.e. in 10th gradeā¦ Good luck to all takers!!!

oh good luck to @fretfulmother son! My kiddo made JMO last year and came home after the 9 hours, saying, āwell, I donāt think I did that well, but it was so cool!ā And he really truly didnāt score all that well ā but he met his goal, which was to get a non-zero score (he got a one!) This year, because he made it last year, heās feeling more pressure. So hereās hoping they both pull it out.

NHS nominations came out last week and it was fine among the kids (they sort of all already know), but I was with some of the parents this weekend for different events, and some of them (not all) were weirdly overly into who got asked and who didnāt. I didnāt care for that very much but luckily, I could focus on the kids and practice my mysterious āsmile and nod.ā

Okay so I took the advice I read on here and signed my son up for HOBY. I actually had a parent a few years ago tell me to have my son go to HOBY at the end of 10th grade year, so I hope he enjoys it.

Oh, dear. We just contacted a college financial planner and an independent college counselor. Just for the look-see. But, I bet itās a slippery slope. The counselor already shared some inside info about two schools on our list that now changes our perception of how suitable those schools might be for DD. I think weāre crossing into new turf in this college prep process.

3rd quarter grades come out in a few weeks. So far some of the grades look betterā¦and thenā¦he forgets his homework! I just donāt know what to do about this kid. But, what I have found is NAGGING is not a motivator!
