@petrichor my son is in AP Calc BC also. That makes four. I heard BC is just a repeat of AB.

The high level progression here starts in 7th grade - Algebra 1, Geometry, Hon Algebra 2, Math Anaylsis/ Pre Calc, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC. I’ve never heard on anyone skipping any classes to get ahead here.

Next year my son will be in AP Calc AB, AP Statistics, AP Economics, and taking Accounting 1. I’m glad he likes math.

In our school Calc AB covers one semester of a college Calc class during the year and BC cover two semesters of a college Calc class during the year, so BC includes AB but moves at a much faster pace.

Loved the “marching band is a cult” comment !! Anything that becomes a year-round pursuit takes on those qualities. In our house I would say it is team sports in general, but at least he plays more than one so the folks involved change a bit every few months.

The math progression starts here in 7th grade as well. A student must test in, get certain grades in 3-6th grade accelerated math class and receive the teacher ’ s recommendation. A teachers’s recommendation is also required each year to continue the path. Our 2nd time through starts in the fall with a DD this time. Not as many girls stick with it, I am sad to say. I don’t permit any “girl’s are not good at math” attitude in our house however.

I do know of 1 boy that took Precalc at a university over a summer to make room for AP physics a year earlier so he would have it for applications. Usually it is not taken until senior year.

I’m not sure entirely about the middle school math at our feeder school because at that point I was homeschooling. But I know the most advanced 8th grade offering is Geometry, so whatever leads up to that.
We were given the impression that Calc AB is a component of BC, as well; not a complete do-over. We’ll see how that works out. I’m just trying to get through the summer and into their junior year, at this point. I think my head will explode long before mid-August.

At our school you take Calc AB or Calc BC (which includes Calc AB plus more content so goes at a quicker pace). You don’t take both.

Is (or has) anyone’s kid done HOBY this year yet? My son goes this weekend. It looks like they all sold out in So. Cal.

My D did HOBY LA two weeks ago. Loved it. Great experience .

Good to hear. I don’t know a whole lot about it, I just know that a few years ago someone told me that when my S gets to the end of his sophomore year to have him do it. I wasn’t really thinking about it and then someone on this thread suggested it so I signed him up. He is the first kid at my school to ever do it.

@seal16 how did parents dress for the orientation on Sunday? Did a lot of parents go to the lunch?

About 20% of parents wear jeans. The rest was in nice outfits, but nothing over the top.

Are kids out of school yet? S has been home for 3 weeks. Successfully completed drivers ed (was boring!). Got his permit and has been driving around everywhere with H. He’s pretty good at it - no nerves. I am actually worried a bit that he’s a little overconfident :)

H took S to see Brandeis yesterday. S doesn’t yet have a clear idea of what he wants to do - but Brandeis fit his criteria for location and size - and apparently, S did like it a lot. I know it’s early and he could easily change his mind over the next year and a half , but it is nice to hear that he likes a school close to home. One that could be reasonably considered as a ‘match’ school and one that does offer merit scholarships. The price tag despite the scholarship is still steep though.

My S school got out at the end of May

My kid was not all that happy with the cheering that goes at HOBY. The word “cult” was thrown around.

@texasp - What was your child able to bring back from HOBY? Anything useful? (Personally, I can’t stand cheers. However, I told my kid to just roll with it. Jump in and cheer with the rest of 'em.)

My child reunited with few of her middle school friends, was very much impressed with speakers at the event, had her first 2 nights spent at university dorm. Came out of her shell and become much more outspoken. The planning of the event was great. One activity after another.

@seal16 - Sounds like exactly what my DD wants. Yea! (cheer)

When I dropped off my S today he heard the cheers and told me he felt like he was going to fit right in. He is extremely loud. I didn’t know that they could win scholarships for World HOBY.

When I went to HOBY you had to be nominated by your school. Is that no longer the case? Can I just send my DS ( and pay for it) just like another camp?

Not really. It is one ambassador and one alternative per school.
