Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Maybe the IB director from GW moved up to your school in Boulder? When my daughter interviewed (after being kept waiting for almost an hour - I don’t think she knew we were there), I asked a few questions like could she take an AP class. WHAT? WHY would any IB student want to take an AP class? (For credit? This was right when some colleges started giving credit for IB and I wasn’t aware of that). At that time GW had one of the original, pure, IB programs. No intermingling with the regular high school students, no AP, no courses outside of IB.

I was very turned off by the program, and my daughter was coming from a modified middle school IB program that I liked. The GW program has now been modified to allow cross registration with AP or even regular high school classes and even the great unwashed of the high school can take an IB course.

I think there can be a group of students on any campus that can make another group feel uncomfortable due to tolerance or intolerance of certain views. My S had concerns about one campus. Not so much that it was too conservative and he would feel discriminated against but more that finding enough of his tribe would be harder. For him it was more than politics, it was also the location and kind of a country versus city thing. It’s all about fit and I don’t think there is a right or a wrong answer there, what is too much for one is just right for another.

I had really wanted S17 to apply to Beloit and couldn’t get him to consider it at all due to the location. Which was silly but whatever.

@morningside95 welcome back! I hope the family issues are better and thrilled to have you around. I love your school list. I had hooped S17 would have added a few of those to his list as well but do expect to tour all/most of those with S19. Good insight on LMU, it may also be on S19’s radar. I know L&C, which was an early contender for S17, seemed pretty reachy and wasn’t going to give him enough merit $ even if he did get in so we didn’t pursue it further.

@snoozn -

The play is “Night of the Iguana.” Purchase requires applicants to read and be able to discuss a play. Apparently, they change it every year. I didn’t read enough of the play to know if actually uses the word Nazi.

^^I think it is smart of your son to care about the location. Beloit is a tiny school, and if you don’t like the location, you are kind of stuck. Kids talk about easy access to NYC or Boston, about being near Disneyland or skiing, but really a college student spends most of the time on campus, in the businesses around campus, doing outdoor activities near campus.

@morningside95 - Thank you for your message about LMU. We are from the East Coast, but visited LMU last year. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it from former students and had a good impression of it myself. My D was accepted EA, but no info on financial support yet; we don’t qualify for any substantial need-based aid, so it will come down to what merit aid they can offer. I’ve heard mixed information on their generosity with merit aid. We’ve been very fortunate with merit aid from other schools so far (Loyola Chicago, Stetson, Cal Lutheran, U of Tampa), but this is the one we’re waiting on.

I think considering location is smart as well, and it certainly does help narrow down the college list! D wants a city school, period. On top of that, she prefers a city school with no campus feel. It’s not what I would want, but she’s very clear about it. I guess that’s just where she thinks she will feel more comfortable to step out into the world. She thrives on the hustle and bustle.

Think about how we all chose to live where we are now - I mean, I had very specific criteria. I wanted to be within a certain square mile of a certain area I felt would meet my needs - I chose where a live based on school system, diversity, access to hospitals, access to shopping, distance to the shore, distance to the mountains, distance to the city, etc.

@Fishnlines29 Considering location is smart but I think my son restricted himself too much and tossed out a lot of good schools because of his restrictions. His were West (but not southwest or S. Calif) and NOT in a big city. What is wan’t is somewhere more remote, I say rural but it’s more close to wilderness. We have found some good schools that fit but it really does toss a lot of good options out the window.

S was admitted to Cal Lu with 20k. We live in SoCal. I have only heard good things about the school. Admitted students get a free hotel room when you attend one of their All Access days. What appeals to S is that you can live on campus all 4 years and that there seems to be a high % of participation in sports at some level. The area is probably the safest in SoCal. Not a big party school.

Color me impressed. S17 is signed up for a music audition for a non major scholarship in Feb. He just got an email from the affiliate artist for his instrument for the school, offering a free lesson to help him prepare for his audition

I think he should do it (despite having a private teacher who is helping him to prepare) hoping he can schedule it on MLK day. Apparently the artist lives quite near us.

@curiositycat333 Yes, I thought we tossed some great ones as well. C’est la vie!

TacoSon didn’t want to be “too remote.” Typical college towns (like Harrisonburg, VA) he deemed “too remote,” though I disagreed. I guess it’s a good thing we never managed to get to Cornell College as I’d hoped! Apparently not even DC has reasonably priced and timed flights to Iowa. Beloit was on the long list from the counselor and I wish now we had looked into it because it sounds great (to me; a certain TacoSon probably thinks it’s too remote).

@eandesmom , good luck to E on his audition! Good for him for being so proactive. TacoSon threw up a fast SlideRoom and resume, but I don’t think he’d take the initiative to audition in person. Please keep us updated!

I PMes this to @eandesmom but I will go ahead and post here now too:

From here on out most of my D’s schools will probably be high reaches/out of reach for many on this thread…

And my D17 has proclaimed she is having a nearly mid-mid life crisis :smiley: and has no idea what she wants. She is really starting to consider a gap year and also impulsively applied to Mizzou this week. I am low key aggravated about this because 1) I really don’t think it is a good fit for her (way too big) 2) since she waited so long to say something, she missed all of the automatic merit deadlines which she would for sure have qualified for and 3) the idea of now going where “everyone” goes now appeals to her when before it appalled her. (I think she sees Mizzou as a “safe” choice because everyone she knows that goes there loves it…so she will too - right??!) Many of the other schools on her list are completely foreign to her friends so she is scared she is making a wrong choice.

I am doing my best to be supportive and not get aggravated with her but boy it she testing my limits right now.

On a positive note she somehow managed to pull out 6 As and one B (80.0% in calc BC) for the semester. I am very very proud of her. Her GC and teachers also agreed to switch her to CALC AB for next semester (plus an hour of TA) so hopefully she will have a little less stress this semester.

@stlarenas , congrats on the Rhodes acceptance and offer! I agree that’s still a pretty steep price tag. I think the application process happening at the start and middle of senior year opens our kids up to so much indecision. Assuming the campus visits began in junior year, they’re making decisions up to two years ahead of time before a lot of emotional, physical and intellectual growth. We, too, sent off a few applications in that panic of wondering if we were on target choosing the schools he’d initially applied to.

Just to clarify, Colorado College’s 2015/2016 Common Data Set reports the mid 50% ACT score is 28-32 (not 23-32); I think that was just a typo but just wanted people reading the results to know their reported number. And yes, CC is need aware for sure and unfortunately that can come into play.

I am so sorry your daughter hasn’t gotten the results she was hoping for. It seems there might be lots of schools with good merit opportunity still accepting applications… and it sounds like your daughter has a strong transcript this fall… hoping she might find some gems that she would be willing to pursue?

@lr4550 yep…that was a typo. Thanks for catching it.

And it isn’t really she hasn’t gotten the results she was hoping for, and it’s just that she really truly doesn’t know what she wants. And she is scared to make the wrong decision.

@stlarenas -

There really are no wrong decisions. Nothing is irrevocable, even a college decision, although it doesn’t seem that way to our teens.

My son is also talking about a gap year. It’s not the end of the world, though I wish he wouldn’t. I’d like to retire someday.

We had location challenges as well so I feel everyone’s pain in that respect. S17 seems to bounce between cool college town and urban. Except nothing he liked is actually urban…suburban at best. Which made him decide that as long as he could get to a cool urban location in a semi reasonable amount of time that would be ok, knowing that he wouldn’t be going all that often. We shall see how that plays out!

@tacocat333 they didn’t give him much choice actually. He wanted to do a video audition but if you live within 200 miles it’s live or no go. He did throw up a music resume, we still have to make a theater one (I need to make sure we do that before any deadlines get missed on that one! I do need to chat with him about what he is preparing for both auditions though.

@stlarenas I think her reactions are perfectly normal and while I feel your pain, the good news is she literally has months before she has to decide and panic right now, self doubt and all of that is to be expected. Not that it’s fun. And a gap year, especially if you commit and then can defer somewhere so know you have a plan, is not the end of the world at all.
