I posted on the other site, so everyone probably knows already but S accepted to CU Boulder for Mechanical Engineering with a small scholarship. There is a possibility for additional money (our fingers are crossed!!). It’s still a bit outside our budget but I think it might be a great fit for him if we can swing it. Their engineering program admission stats are pretty high (3.87-4.0, 30-33 ACT) so We are really happy for him.

Son competed for a Presidential scholarship this weekend. We won’t know the results until late February since he attended the first weekend out of three for the competition. There was an essay portion (50 minutes) and a dialogue portion (read interview for 15 minutes). He lucked out that one of his interviewers was an alumni who is now a Software Engineer. He was impressed with some of son’s awards and they talked about programs he had written etc. Thank goodness for that - son can either be a chatty Cathy or clam up. Glad it was the former. He enjoyed the weekend even if it was a little stressful. He goes back to this same school at the end of February to compete for a degree specific scholarship.

@jmek15 Great that your son got into Boulder. Boulder was one of the apps my son finished yesterday. (The official deadline) Good to know your S got into Engineering with a small scholarship. How long did it take to hear back? I curious. I’m sure since yesterday was the deadline it will take longer at this point.
I suggested to my DS that he apply CS in the A&S dept… rather than Engineering. He doesn’t have the stats for their Engineering, plus I think the BA at Boulder is better fit for what he wants to do. Engineering at Boulder would have been a high reach, but it’s a match school otherwise.
@curiositycat333 Boulder is taking a while for my daughter. She submitted her app. by I think Nov. 18 but it wasn’t complete with her counselor letter and transcript and all until Dec. 1. Seems the pattern is the portal will say they are “currently processing” the app, then eventually it changes to “reviewing” and then will get a decision some time after that. Daughter’s is still in “currently processing” even though she submitted it two months ago and it was complete 6 weeks ago. Seems other students heard answer after 4-5 weeks, others it took up to 8 weeks to get into “reviewing” so could be a while … By the way, it says they have all her items so that’s not the issue.
Well D finished her Honors Scholarship essay and updated her essay for Lloyd International Honors College at UNCG without any prompting. It would make life a WHOLE lot easier for everyone if she went there and the Honors College has separate dorms plus smaller class sizes. It is a short distance from here so if money becomes an issue, she can always commute her first year and stay working at Starbucks over here. We will see! We should hear back from financial aid for Beloit this coming week and from Kalamazoo later this month. She has another outside scholarship to complete for $1250 a semester which would be a huge bonus.

This has certainly been a useful thread for me, especially the results portions. Our S16 only applied to two schools: one with an automatic full tuition and housing scholarship, and another where significant scholarship money was very likely. His GPA fit this thread, but he was NMSF and had an elite level SAT. S18 is in the same boat as many of your 2017 kids. His GPA fits, and his PSAT scores are very good (1280) but not spectacular. It’s good to see what’s happening with similar students. It’s helpful to see that in-state schools, non flagship OOS, and a few of the LAC’s are realistic options.

@techmom99 , have you visited LIU? I have a co-worker whose son transferred after sophomore year because he couldn’t relate to the student body and had many roommate issues. He thought the surrounding area was dangerous. he transferred to Temple in Philly. I wouldn’t classify Temple as “safe.” I’m interested to hear from someone else on LIU. I have difficulty believing the LIU was different than Temple in the type of student and the surrounding area.
