@jmek15 congrats on Boulder! Let me know if you want it added to the big list
Thank you for the concern.
We actually live close enough to LIU-Post that techson could take public transit to school. The area where LIU- Post is located is part of what is referred to as “The Gold Coast of Long Island.” If you’ve ever read a Nelson Demille novel, he writes about the area beautifully. The campus is beautiful and safe and is most definitely in a wealthy suburban area. We live in a starter neighborhood and not in the very rich area.
The Brooklyn campus of LIU is probably where your co-worker’s son attended. That is in a borough of NYC and is not the best area. It’s urban, like Temple. I also wouldn’t classify Temple as safe and discouraged my son from applying there. Not only is my son not street smart, Temple changed its merit award rubrics this year to make it unlikely that he would get anything.
I don’t know about the roommates but the LIU techson would attend is, as I said, close enough to commute.
I thought D was all done yesterday, but she got an email from Clarkson U honors that she is required to upload a resume. It’s silly because her resume will have nothing that isn’t in her regular app. But now she’ll have to type up the stupid thing. Sigh. At least she’s done otherwise. At least I think so…
My poor oldest D took Calc even though she ended up not needing it when she decided (last semester) not to keep her second major or go to PT school. And I think she had to start at Alg 2 in college (maybe pre-calc).
D17’s school requires a finance class, which I agree all schools should require. And I also think it should include some basic probability and statistics. (As Mark Twain said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”)
He submitted EA on November 15th (the deadline, grrrr) and we heard back on Friday, Jan 13th so it was almost 2 months. The financial info was added a a day or so after the portal was updated. Good luck to your son, @curiositycat333!! Admissions are rolling, so it’s tough to predict how long it will take to get a decision.
@tacocat333 … S17 applied ED to CNU & was notified mid-December. He has until the end of this month to decline other acceptances or withdraw outstanding apps. Out of curiosity we waited until we heard from JMU before notifying colleges & submitting a deposit. I see Taco-Son has been accepted into CNU. We visited UofMW & GMU but S17 wanted a football college.
@MomStudent2017 , congrats on CNU ED! I was so impressed by CNU when we visited. Will your son have a leg up on dorm choice/learning community once you commit?
I am biting my tongue and sitting on my hands over TacoSon opting for a music lesson instead of calculus study session tomorrow. Disengage, disengage!
@tacocat333 … The college provides a list of tasks that are opened on specific dates for submitting information: profile / academics / housing, etc. So, not sure if the dates are the same for ED, EA, & RD acceptances. S17 is indifferent to which dorm & LC is he gets into
@kt1969 so…I think I backdoored my way into seeing the merit award. LOL! I was able to log into the financial aid tracking and could see what was offered for loan package and based on that, pretty positive he is being offered the exact same amount as your D.
@CAtransplant Boulder may still be working on EA apps. Have you heard of any RD applicants (submitted after 11/15) being notified yet?
@eandesmom Is that enough for it to be a workable choice from your perspective?
@kt1969 Eh. It’s not ideal. It would put it only about 1K less than UVM and for his program, if I am going to stretch the budget, UVM really blows all the rest away in his area of interest. It’s also about $3500 more than Allegheny and Allegheny may still go down 1-2k based on a potential music scholarship. UVM also has a scholarship potential but I think that’s a long shot. Still that helps keep it in play.
We can obviously go back and ask for more, it is under the NPC (which was terrible as you know lol) and Allegheny is certainly a peer that we can leverage. But he is definitely not in a position to say he’d commit there, or to Ursinus where we have a similar price issue. Not sure if having the NPC conversation now makes sense at both of these given that there is no clear favorite, but I worry about waiting given that money runs out, so waiting till after touring seems a tad risky.
If it was just about the program I might let it go. He has 3 schools very very strong in his area of interest (although the in state safety is not where he wants to go lol). But, given that his interest could change and he loves the LAC environment…who knows!
Are you planning to try to leverage any offers or go back if the NPC showed a larger award?
@CAtransplant @jmek15 So don’t expect to hear from Boulder soon. OK, that’s good to know. I won’t expect anything soon. Particularly as my son applied on the last day. That’s the thing about deadlines. DS gets a lot of motivation from deadlines. Even if I tell him the deadline is in two weeks but school X is going to give you better consideration if you get it in early doesn’t motivate him at all.
@techmom99 Post has good public transit to it? Busses? It’s a very suburban campus from what I remember. When I went to visit 5 years ago, we took a train from NYC and had to get a taxi to the campus. But maybe that’s because it was summer. I seem to remember reading there were busses from the train station.
@jmek15 now that you mention it, I’m not sure. I just was going by how long it took for others to have their app. move through the system but maybe I wasn’t paying attention to whether they were all people who got the app. in before 11/15. I don’t know why my D couldn’t have since she got it in 3 days later but whatever!
@eandesmom I don’t think I’m going to do anything to push for more $$. I asked St Michael’s about why the award was so much lower than the NPC and they gave me some kind of generic answer and no more $$. I hate haggling over anything, anyway.
@kt1969 I hear you. I think if one is really really the one he absolutely wants and would commit that day then maybe it makes sense but right now I really don’t want to have that conversation with anyone if I don’t have to. So we will tour and see. I still haven’t booked the Philly flights…there are still lots of seats and if the FA offer is really just loans then I really think he needs to consider cutting it. I called them again today and we will have it by the end of the month but it isn’t processed yet. I am not seeing anything in my research that is making it worth stretching the budget for (whereas there is for UVM) The variance on the NPC is pretty huge and, they use the more detailed Cegment one I think. Goucher does come in a bit less than Ursinus (at the moment) so there is that lol.
Financial aid came in for Kalamazoo and without loans it puts it in the running (including work/study). Hoping to hear from Beloit some time this week.
@curiositycat333 for Boulder, I know someone else from here whose D submitted on Nov. 15 and JUST heard she was admitted. So it does often seem to be taking two months or so for those who got the apps in by the EA deadline. Someone else who said she submitted by 11/22 just heard she was admitted over the weekend also.
@mackatarinasmom Congratulations! Wonderful school!
If necessary, techson17 could take a bus 4 blocks from home for about a 10 - 15 minute ride and transfer to a bus that stops directly on campus. However, he will either live there or drive for the most part. My friend’s D, who is graduating this year, is dropped at the second stop by her mom on the way to work as the girl doesn’t drive.
Congrats, @mackatarinasmom Kalamazoo was on our list (as was Beloit), but reluctantly (for me) came off as D whittled down her list. So great to hear that loans won’t be necessary with Kzoo. Good luck with Beloit!
D got an invitation to the Honor Program at Allegheny today. Have to say I was surprised as I wouldn’t have thought her stats would qualify her, but she needs to respond by February 24, so cynical me is thinking that this is just a strategy being employed by the school to get admitted students to commit before the May 1st deadline. Do honor colleges/honor programs typically require an early commitment? Also seems very early to require a response as the RD deadline to apply is February 15. Despite being excited about getting the free t-shirt, D doesn’t seem that excited about the school, lol. My guess is that she would feel like she was in a fishbowl if she joined the Honor Program. Waiting until midterms are over this week before any more college talk!
