@eandesmom Wow…what a beautiful list you have compiled! That’s a nice resource for people in the 3.0-3.4 GPA range to take a look at. If you would like to add my D to the list feel free.
GPA: 3.4 UW ACT: 31
Goes to small private school that doesn’t weight, rank or have any AP’s or honors but she is on the “accelerated track”
major: Geology
Lots of work hours as rock climbing instructor all 4 years, tutor and camp counselor
Stage and tech manager for theater productions, Jazz Ensemble, Model Congress and Model UN, Girls Softball and track, some volunteer work
Accepted at: UColorado Boulder, Portland State, SUNY New Paltz, USouth Florida, UArizona with a merit scholarship of $17,000/year, UOregon
still waiting on decisions from Stony BrookU, and some University of CA schools

Congrats to all on the acceptances.

As for Techson17, Adelphi offered him $16K in merit. He was accepted into the honors program at SUNY Fredonia with an additional $1,500 one year grant. His tech interview is in a couple of weeks. He passed the tech interview at Post but he wasn’t offered more money.

Our plan right now is to see if he gets into/likes Fredonia and then approach Post for more money and make the decision based on that. Right now, Fredonia is under budget and Post still has about a 6 -8K gap for the first year.

@eandesmom , thank you for the updated list! I love scrolling through and seeing all the decisions in one place. The only one I think I missed for TacoSon was acceptance to Dickinson last month, $20K merit. It’s too rich for our blood, unfortunately.

Are all of us in this forum of the age that we can remember the airfare wars of the early '90s? I feel like March of college season is kind of like that. For those of us with financial concerns, the bragging rights no longer to go the most competitive university acceptances, but to the biggest aid packages.

Interesting how several of our (Struggling?) sons have been fighting that non-flu! TacoSon continues to have a low grade fever but went back to school yesterday. I honestly think exhaustion has gotten him run down. I know I’m feeling wiped out, uncertain, nervous, self-doubting and starting to grieve a little bit. In two weeks, the final 3 decisions will be in, and we’ll know for certain where he’s heading.

Maybe the struggling sons brains are rejecting the Calculus. I’m glad mine seems to have made a recovery - still congested but no fever.

Son announced last night that he’s nominated for Captain of the Track team. While it wouldn’t help for any admittances or scholarships at this point I think it would mean a lot to him.

He was also notified yesterday that he did not win either of the scholarships from the competitive weekends he attended. It was a long shot and that school is falling down the list so it’s all good.

My niece had her pre-school graduation pictures taken yesterday and WOW. Hard to believe I’ll have a son graduation community college, one graduating high school, and my niece is graduating Pre-K. Hopefully we can get a pic of all three but I doubt my oldest is going to walk so he won’t have a new cap and gown.

Congrats to all of your kids that have received acceptances from many of the fine schools that @eandesmom listed.
Impressive!!

S17 had the “non flu” as well, on the heels of the NYC part of his trip and first part of our college grand tour. I also caught it and am still not 100%. I do think part of it is the stress of all of this! In speaking with a couple of other parents last night at S19’s winter concert…the stress and flip flopping seems universal. I was shocked to learn of one close friend who’s S…an amazingly talented horn player (state and conservatory level player), had received almost nothing on the scholarship front and may well end up at CC for a year or two for financial reasons. She was bemoaning the fact that they didn’t go after privates but honestly with his stats (low for this thread) I don’t think they’d have fared any better since it appears they can’t afford the in state options. I just don’t see the privates offering him a total package that would be less. Heartbreaking though. On the flip side I did learn U of Portland will definitely pay big MAC for high test scores yet marginal GPA so am keeping that one in mind for S19.

@LilyMoon thanks! I will add your D to the list. Congrats on all the acceptances!

@techmom99 those are nice updates! Does Post become more affordable after year one? I take that is techson’s top choice? I"m attempting the merit negotiation…so far it’s not going terribly well. Admissions seems to “not get” I am asking for a merit review…not a FA one.

@tacocat333 Congrats on Dickinson, what a lovely school but bummer about the price tag. That’s the struggle isn’t it, lovely schools that our kids can actually get into but…not affordable.

@smakl70 yay for the Captain nod! That has to feel good. Not everything is about how it looks on the college app. What is your CC grad up to next? That’s an exciting milestone. Kids are funny about the walking, our oldest refused to walk at HS and it was a battle to make him do it for college. Pre-K graduations crack me up, so cute!

@eandesmom the CC grad will attend a regional public next for his Mech E. He actually started at a private engineering school but hated the super competitive environment and the stress was taking a huge toll on him (he lost 15 lbs in the first 2 quarters there). We’re lucky that our local CC is actually highly-rated for the state and has an agreement with the regional U for engineering transfers.

Both of my boys have been “forced” to walk their HS graduations. We shall see about the college ones - I didn’t walk in my own so I shall remain silent.

The Captain nod really warmed my heart. Son is a 2 sport varsity player but the sport that he’s played club in since 6 yrs old has been rough on him. Coaches there don’t seem to “get” him. He ran track in middle school but more for fun (he’s always loved to run). In HS the coaches there saw his potential and have been great to him. They build him up instead of tear him down so it means a lot to this mom for him to get that nod.

FYI at some point I’ll post a separate list of the final commitments, a “short” list if you will.

@smakl70 what a wonderful success for your older son. We have a good friend who had a similar experience and is thriving at our regional public. I love that the HS “got” your son in a way that the club sport did not. Club is (was, for us anyway) brutal and I have to say, I don’t miss it at all. It’s amazing what positive reinforcement can do!

@endemom Thanks for all the work on that lists. It’s really interesting to see where everyone’s applied.

For some reason I thought my S’s acceptance at Oregon State was already on the list and didn’t include it in my PM. My mistake. Not a big deal.

Anxiously waiting the UC’s… Rumor is UC Davis announcements will come out tomorrow. It’s a reach so I’m not too anxious about it. Of course the school I’m most anxious about UC Santa Cruz will be my S17’s last. That announcements is supposed come out next week, early AM on March 15th.

After that I can probably get DS to finally decide on if he’s visiting anywhere over spring break.

P.S. @endesmom So you are saying I should have had S17 look at U of Portland. That school was too urban for my kid. He really did restrict himself a lot by geography.

Woot woot! Congrats to all the kids, it’s very inspiring to see the results all together in one place. And many thanks to @eandesmom for pulling it all together.

As for the CC issue. There are lots of very talented kids that attend our local CC’s. All 3 of the local ones have a good reputation, great teachers and kids regularly transfer to top UC’s from them. It really is a great option for many kids and affordable. 40% of the school goes to CC. IF my kid had really wanted to attend Berkley or UCLA it would have been his best path to those schools. But he has no intention of sticking around here next year if he doesn’t have to.

The downside to CC is the kid doesn’t get that experience of moving out of the house. And our CC’s are over impacted and a students needs to be ON TOP of things in order to get the classes he/she needs. And a large fractions of students end on a 3-4 year transfer plan rather than a 2 year one.

What frustrates me are the parents I know who don’t even give their kid a chance, don’t encourage their kid to even apply to 4 year schools. Often these are great kids, with stats in this range. But at our school that feels like a failure. And since the kids are in the “top” 25% of the class they don’t think they have a chance anywhere.

@curiositycat333 I thought it was too! My bad. I’ve added it for the next update. All I know is the classmate received a scholarship that brought it within our in state prices, and lower than the flagship. I was floored to be honest. I don’t know his exact gpa, it might be a bit higher than this thread but it might not. He’s very much one of our kids in a lot of ways, ADHD and tests off the charts, doesn’t bother to turn in homework, very high rigor coursework. Really good test scores though and solid EC’s. If S19 could get that kind of award there it could be a real contender. I plan to find out his exact test scores lol as S19’s overall package is fairly similar lol. The mom is actually going to give me the name of the ADHD coach they are using, she said it’s helped a LOT this year.

Good luck on Davis this week and UCSC next!

Congratulations everyone! (lurker here) Have been keeping up and cheering you all on…In all of your and your children’s investigations, I can see a possible path for my DD and it’s reassuring and informative! Many of your kids’ schools will be on our radar and I have learned so much!

I thought I had come here much too early, but maybe not. DD is freaking out a bit because yesterday she had to meet with a guidance counselor to register for 9th grade classes and map out all four years of H.S. She has chosen a heavy load for next year (including an AP, two sciences, and marching band newly added to the mix. ) Yikes! The future is here, ready or not!!! I’ve been giving her lots more hugs and kisses lately…I’m sure she’s been wondering what’s up with me

@inthegarden - blink and you’ll miss it. Chew on this for a minute: You have four summers left with your DD before she graduates. FOUR SUMMERS.
(I have two summers left and it’s the worst feeling to realize you’ll never ever cram everything you wanted to do with your kid before they fly the coop.)
