Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Thanks guys!

@morningside95 @4kids4us

USD is going to be out of our price range, and likely the same issue with LMU. I"m not sure how he would feel about a Catholic University. He is open to considering Jesuit ones but it really will depend on the school. He’d likely describe himself as atheist but he’s very exploratory and is going through the confirmation process at our church right now. I don’t expect him to confirm but you never know. At any rate, he’s not made a blanket statement indicating no religious schools and will at least look at them. Loyola Baltimore could be interesting. I’d looked at Fordham but same thing on the price issue.

Lawrence is on his list. My H would be in heaven as there is a large airshow he loves and it would make it easy (in his mind) although I’ve reminded him that the show is in the summer…which is not when S19 would be there!

I told him we could check out Fiske from the library for the summer and he was welcome to pour through it. He will likely take me up on it.

Hate to break it to you guys, but a 3.0-3.4 is very average. I would recommend applying to a state school.

@Bobbybob444555

I might suggest you read the actual conversation, or quite a bit more of this thread, before making a blanket statement. I know you are a student and new to CC. This is a parents forum thread, and we are very well aware of what a 3.0-3.4 means. If you fall into that range and want to stick around to see the amazing results these kids have had which includes many many non state schools and many many scholarships, I would welcome you to do so as I will be updating our results soon.

The recent conversation is related to a specific student with their potential stats which are likely outside of those posted in the title of this thread…

@mamaedefamilia I do think he can hit a 30-31 or a 1400. Beyond that not so sure. Case is a good idea, I had thought of that before but didn’t note it.

As far as timing goes, he finished easily on the SAT for both sections. On the ACT he struggled to finish in time for all but the Science. He felt the ACT was harder. Do you think the match sections differences are still true with the new SAT?

As with his brother I am hoping to do as much EA as possible. It will be down to the wire as our flagship doesn’t notify till middle/end of march but the more we can do EA, the better.

Just curious if Lake Forest College has ever been mentioned in this thread. Seems like a nice LAC that gives merit aid. Is test optional as well. I don’t know much (anything really) about it but thought I would mention it is out there and looks like it is in a nice location- just north of Chicago and essentially on Lake Michigan.

@lr4550 no, I don’t think it has. I have a friend whose D is likely headed there next year. They are local.

Case was not great with merit aid for TacoSon, who had high ACT but 3.5 GPA. I just went into the portal, and it was $5K grant, and the rest loans. This was for business school. With higher GPA, YMMV – just FYI!

Is there an end in sight for anyone? It’s been a brutal week for TacoSon, with IB testing starting tomorrow on top of everything else. Desperately wishing for that easy, breezy Q4 experience (which may be as rare as the merit aid for privates bringing cost below public, lol).

End is not remotely in sight. E1 is slammed with homework, AP test studying, tech, marching band and work. Not remotely easy breezy!

Bleh @tacocat333 5K would not cut it.

@eandesmom - If your S19 gets his stats up, I would not rule out LMU or Loyola of Chicago (also big city and next to water). Jesuit schools seem to be the religious the schools that are least likely to hit you over the head with their Catholic philosophy. I felt the same thing about the attitude at St. Olaf, my S17’s future home, among the Lutheran schools. I’m glad my agnostic/maybe atheist kid will be going to college with students who tend to have a strong spiritual background. We went to a liberal Catholic church, through our kids’ grade school years, and they know that the ideas espoused in the New Testament are the basis for a pretty good moral philosophy, whether you are a believer or not.

I was just about done with the Catholic church when I started there, way back in the early 80s, but found that I loved the Jesuit philosophy on just it mean to be a Christian and their view of academics. (I had picked the school because of the strong business program and really nice kids I met on the tour!) I began to like going to church, for the first time in my life, but didn’t pay much attention to which students attended services and which didn’t. It was all very personal.
Students were judged by how you treated others, and I eventually found out some of friends were Jewish, or Muslim or agnostic, but it was a total non-factor. From what I’ve read, recently, the same live and let live attitude exists among the students today. Of course, the school is much more racially diverse than it was when I went there. I would assume this attitude applies to Loyola of Chicago too, another Jesuit school. We have at least 3 friends headed there, this fall.

Also, @eandesmom - Interesting new avatar! To what does the “OP” on the logo refer? Sorry, clearly not familiar with the schools in that part of the country.

@eandesmom My comparison of the two tests was for the new SAT. My D did not have the opportunity to take the old one. There have been a number of articles about the heavy verbal content of the math questions on the new SAT (which especially works to the detriment of kids who aren’t good readers or who have English as as second language)

The math content on the ACT is a bit more comprehensive than on the SAT - there might be a little bit of trig included? But if your son is starting Calc next year, his math background should be sufficient.

@morningside95 well shoot, it’s a bit of a work in progress (the avatar) It’s actually “CP” which is the Cal Poly short logo. It’s hard to see though. I felt like SD 14 was getting slighted lol!

I’m super familiar with the Jesuit schools, my father taught at Seattle U for years, many of my cousins went to U of Portland (which I guess isn’t Jesuit but Catholic), Seattle U or other “religious” schools like PLU or SPU. I just wasn’t sure how “catholic” Loyola would be. I’d be more concerned about cost. I love the Jesuit philosophy and think it’s a great fit for S19, who thankfully is pretty open.

So you made this Avatar yourself, to honor both kids?! Well done! Love SLO and Cal Poly! One of my favorite spots in CA. The Central Coast often gets overlooked, and that is what makes it special. Things move at a more reasonable pace that other parts of the state.

I remember there being a mom from the Class of 2016, whose son got a nice merit package from there, with really good but not spectacular stats. He ended up staying close to home, and going to Mizzou.

No, I have to give credit to another CC’er but I’m not sure she wants her services published. Although if you come to join the CC 2017 FB page…she’s on there

That’s lovely that he got a nice merit package, that’s pretty rare out of Cal Poly actually, generally OOS don’t get much if anything and it’s quite difficult to get into for most majors. But for OOS tuition it is more reasonable than many and certainly for California. SD received a small scholarship. It’s interesting, a classmate of S17’s seems to have his choices down to Cal Poly or Northeastern. Given NEU’s reputation for stinginess I was shocked to learn that the prices, based on his package, are basically equal. I can’t imagine two programs more different (CS).

We LOVE SLO and SD absolutely loves Cal Poly. It’s been the perfect fit for her.

I think if we just remove the image that’s behind the mascots it’ll be easier to see.

@eandesmom If he’s open to Jesuit, what about USF? D17 applied there and got $19k merit.

ARRGH. It appears CC has disabled color coding somehow. So all the pretty green, orange and red for the monster list are…not showing up. Proofing things now.

WAH!

****CLASS of 2017 3.0-3.4 OUTCOMES **
*Please note: *

  1. All acceptances show COA at the time of acceptance or in publicly available information and may or may not be current. COA should be confirmed if using this data as research.
  2. All acceptances show admissions stats at the time of acceptance/application so is using 2015 and or 2016 admissions cycle data from publicly available information, it will not reflect the actual admissions data for the class of 2017. Please note that various sites may site slightly different statistics and admissions data changes yearly.
  3. If In State or OOS is not noted, the school is private. If unknown, both are listed
  4. FA designations are subjective (if provided) and are categorized as Generous, Decent, Stingy, Crappy or Donut or similar terms like “ok”
  5. UW GPA’s are used for students if available, however colleges may use UW or W, varies. If the data found indicated it is W, that is shown.
  6. Merit awards are assumed to be annual, renewable for 8 semesters unless otherwise noted. Merit awards may or may not have been provided with acceptance updates. The absence of merit may or may not mean any was awarded.

These results are current with what has been reported through 4/27. If there are additions and changes, please PM me as I “may” do one more giant update with any fire sale merit awards added in (we received one today lol) and then plan to move on to a summary and the matriculation list!

It looks like it’s going to take about 15 posts to get it all in so grab your ~O)

I am hoping the color issue is temporary, the coding is there if it comes back :expressionless:
