Yay, @CoyoteMom!
@CoyoteMom Congrats–and love the sock story! And cool that coyoteson chose the best fit for him over prestige!
@eandsmom As always, the list is a work of art–love it, and all the success of this group of kids.
I can’t remember who asked this, but YES–I HAVE A HUGE CASE OF PARENT-ITIS! B-)
And S is possibly in his busiest month ever. Tomorrow is his big mock trial competition, so he’s been meeting every night this week to work with his co-counsel, witnesses, and lawyer coaches. Plus there’s a big district wide scholarship app due today–its in, but probably not his best work/essay. Then the next 2+ weeks are IB and AP exams. Talk about a ball of stress!
Oh, and to answer @tacocat333 I think I got extremely lucky–S17 chose my school. It was the best experience for me, and I wanted that small group within a big school fit for him, too. I truly think it will be an awesome environment for him (but wouldn’t have worked at all for S15 who would be completely lost in a huge school, even if he had a smaller group/major to anchor him).
Yay, @CoyoteMom! It’s awesome that CoyoteSon was able to pick out his best fit. I hear you on the best fit for them vs best fit for us.
Wow, folks! That is some list! We should all be so very proud of our amazing kids! And I ^:)^ to @eandesmom for documenting it all–such a great resource for all who come after us!
@CoyoteMom Congrats on Beloit! It was very cute how your son spilled the beans
@eandsmom Your hard work is so appreciated! Can’t wait to see the final list of where everyone ended up :D/
So, going by our max OOP threshold of $30k, which is ballpark where I think our FAFSA EFC would be (not than we can really swing that, but whatever), these are the schools from this year’s list that come in under that amount:
Drexel - COA: $67,000, actual scholarships/grants: $37,000
Drury U - COA: $35,000, actual scholarships/grants: $17,000
Elmhurst - COA: $45,178, actual scholarships/grants: $17,000
Hawaii Pacific - COA: $40,758, actual scholarships/grants: $14,000
Iowa State - COA: $34,400, actual scholarships/grants: $6,500
Juniata - COA: $51,740, actual scholarships/grants: $25,000
Montana State - COA: $33,400, actual scholarships/grants: $15,000
Mount St Mary’s (MD) COA: $45,902, actual scholarships/grants: $24,000
North Central College COA: $46,830, actual scholarships/grants: $19,000
Ohio U - COA: $36,120, actual scholarships/grants: $7,000
Randolph Macon - COA: $52,550, actual scholarships/grants: $22,000
Rhodes - COA: $57,862, actual scholarships/grants: $32,500
Susquehanna - COA: $57,600, actual scholarships/grants: $28,000
U of Hartford - COA: $53,000, actual scholarships/grants: $24,000
Valparieso - COA: $48,370, actual scholarships/grants: $20,000
I’m not counting schools listed with in-state rates (anyway, for us, it’s Pennsylvania, and PSU doesn’t even come in under $30k, though there are “lesser” state schools that do.)
Also, several of the above were because of the very competitive top scholarships being awarded.
While it’s a solid list, I’m pretty dispirited, as my kid wouldn’t get those top scholarships, so that’d nudge a few more off the list. But it’s a start!
Huge thanks to @eandesmom
Hi All, I’m usually on the other Class of 2017 page - but have occasionally checked in on the journey’s here. What an impressive list of outcomes and congrats to all of you and your DC on some fantastic opportunities! It’s exciting to see where all of our DC are headed.
@eandesmom - you were working on a list for your S19 I believe for CS. You also mentioned looking either closer to home or near family in Colorado. Have you looked at Colorado School of Mines at all? It’s on the smaller side, but their CS program is growing. They have a page for parents on preparing for Mines that you could check out.
@CoyoteMom - Congrats on a job well done, to both you and CoyoteSon. I know you really put so much careful thought and care into his search process and I have really enjoyed vicariously sharing your journey and reading your insightful posts. I’m so glad Beloit is the right fit for him, and I hope the socks fit, too!
@eandesmom - you are amazing, all that you do with that list. It’s not like you’re sitting around all day with nothing else to keep you busy. You know that saying, “If you need to get something done, ask a busy person?” I have a feeling you’re one of those awesome types. It will be so helpful to other kids going forward. Thanks so much!
@Gatormama don’t be discouraged. 3 of the schools on your list were schools my son applied to (probably the info you have listed I can’t remember exact figures anymore) and his stats weren’t spectacular. There are great schools out there for every kid (and many that will give good merit aid) it just takes a lot of legwork and since you’re hear reading I think you’re off to a good start.
I’m loving seeing everyone’s new avatars!
@Gatormama – I didn’t go back to see if they are on the list, but also:
Arizona State University (OOS COA $$43,574, actual merit scholarship
$14,000/yr); and
Washington State University (OOS COA $35,872, actual merit $24,516 (full tuition). WSU merit money was for NMSF, but given the original cost I imagine other scholarship money might be available to bring it below your threshold). There is a lot to like at that school IMO.
@eandesmom – Looks like S17’s WashU St. Louis admission fell off the list (the list stopped at the "V"s).
Yep–Still no “Accept” button hit in the Hanksterhouse, but I’ll be very surprised if it’s not WashU as that’s been his leaning for a while.
I just wanted to pop out of lurkdom to express my tremendous gratitude to @eandesmom for tirelessly compiling and posting this list, and to all the parents of this thread for contributing their kids’ data to it! I know you all know what an amazing resource this is, but I feel like a big THANK YOU from someone who benefits is merited! :x
Question: Is it just me or did the list cut off unexpectedly after Villanova? I thought there were at least a couple of W schools that should come after based on previous versions of the list, but I don’t see them, and I swear I am NOT complaining! I have the info from the previous posts
Finally, I wanted to congratulate all of you and your amazing kids on surviving this wild year, some great choices, and the awesome future they have ahead of them at their chosen schools! =D> I hate to call myself a voyeur, but when the shoe fits… :-" It’s been a joy to follow your journeys and I wish you all the best! <:-P
@mdcmom So glad to hear D14 is coming home and Cornell is being accommodating! It must be such a relief for her.
@CoyoteMom YEA!!! Congratulations on Beloit! I’m so happy for your son <:-P
@eandesmom Wow, great updates to the list and I know future CC’ers will just love this!!! ^:)^
@Hankster1361 none here either. S is a non sleeping stomach churning mess and I too am sprouting a few new gray hairs.
S is torn about Reed. It is a “lightning rod” place for him. He liked the vibe and is attracted to the school and also nervous and scared about the workload and “stress culture” reputation.
I believe the mom choice, Kenyon, has fallen completely off the list. I pushed it hard but couldn’t make him love it like I do. Like @CoyoteMom I will have to remind myself that I had my shot at college and my love for the place isn’t exactly relevant at this point!
Arrgh! Looks like the last page and a half didn’t post.
thank you @Hankster1361 for pointing that out.
I had a page break in my word doc so I thought I was at the end while copying and pasting yesterday lol.
More responses later…crazy day at work, including an interview (because @cameo43 I need more to do.) :))
I really WILL do one last big posting with any corrections, duplications, updated stats and merit.
