The missing sock finding it’s pair
That Coyote Son knows what he wants and where he can find it (fit wise).
That Coyote mom supports it even if it means walking away from a bit of a dream.

I have no doubt he will find his intellectual peers at Beloit, it has sounded like “home” all along.

CONGRATULATIONS to the CoyoteDen!

Should we have a post where we compile where everyone is going? @eandesmom shouldn’t be the one to do it of course as she has done so much already, but might be fun to have one post that shows where the kids all end up. I’m happy to do it if people want to PM me.

@Hankster1361 , how did I miss that HankKid was also WL at VT? With those test scores I’m seriously shocked. I’m still kind of ticked at Tech (not that TacoSon had any desire to go there; this is all about me). In the February round of acceptances there were kids with far lower stats who made it in, even to Engineering.

@kt1969 I had planned to but will gladly hand that one over! Yes, I do think we should.

Wonderful news, @CoyoteMom!! The way CoyoteSon and your family handled the whole situation was an excellent example for other families, in future years. What a fun way of letting you know, as a clear acknowledgement, on his part, of the work you’ve put in to guide him through this process!

It must at least be fun for you to know that CoyoteSon made it in Carleton, one of the toughest non-Ivies to get into, esp. here in the Midwest - well done! And it’s nice that you went there, just to make sure everything was taken into consideration. It sound like Grinnell, where my S16 is, might have been a good place for CoyoteSon, based on your description, and Beloit was one of his options too. It is so great that CoyoteSon is being thoroughly recognized for all his accomplishments by the crew at Beloit ($$), and sounds like an awesome fit. As mentioned before, I forwarded your very helpful campus report to a few friends!

@CoyoteMom , @eandesmom, and others have provided detailed and thoughtful campus reports that will surely be helpful to other students and their families, down the line! If it’s okay, maybe once S17 is settled in at school, I might organize the report from this thread, and others to put them in an updated Campus Visit Reports thread on CC, if that would be alright.

And I can’t say enough Thank Yous! ^:)^ to @eandesmom for all the hour and hours of work she has put into documenting these wonderful results. And for inviting me to this thread, in the first place. My family and I are forever grateful! (I’m continually shocked by how many parents in our school district - with something like a 97% graduation to college rate, have never heard of CC! - They do if they ever talk to me!!)

Good luck with getting creative with your avatars, everyone!

Sending all our positive thoughts to @Hankster1361 and @93pilots, as your kids make their final decisions!

Congratulations @CoyoteMom! I have the pleasure of hanging out with a bunch of crusty old Beloiters from the way back, and they are among my favorite people!

@93pilots Our kids had a lot of overlap in their applications so I can’t wait for your decision! Sending wishes for wisdom, calm, and resolution to you and your S this weekend! You, too @Hankster1361. Do we have anyone else on this thread still deciding?

@tacocat333 Actually, if I were doing college all over again, I’d probably pick the one D17 has chosen (Willamette). On our tour we learned they have a debate scholarship and a 3/3 law school program. Would have been perfect for me!

@NolaCAR - Your comment about the 3/3 law program reminded me of a story. As you know, Willamette was a top pick for S17, (he didn’t qualify for enough merit :frowning: ) but I can’t say I’m unhappy that he’ll be closer to home. Anyway, my S16 and I met a family from Alaska, while in OH visiting Oberlin, and they were the first family I’d met who were personally connected to Willamette. (We’d just read about it in the CTCL book) They couldn’t say enough wonderful things about Willamette, and relayed that their older son went there, and then received a large scholarship to go to law school at University of Oregon. I forget where you are from, WI? Sounds like they have some fun traditions, on-campus, so hope you are able to visit during the school year!

Thanks @morningside95. D17 has banned us from campus first semester-she didn’t even want us to move her in, but we told her that’s non-negotiable. But I’m hoping she’ll let us attend family weekend another year.

I’ve really appreciated learning more about St. Olaf from you. I hadn’t known a lot about it before, even though I have a friend who is an alum. The knowledge I have gleaned from you will help me give thoughtful recommendations to others for whom it might be a good fit.

Good for you, @NolaCAR - Sounds like you’re setting D17 straight. Parents are allowed to visit on official family days. Period! (to quote our current Press Sec!) Since St Olaf is much closer to home than S17 wanted, we agreed to only go for family days, AND if invited - perhaps a nice complimentary dinner out, away from the dining hall - even tho St O is known for its great food services. It is run by Bon Appetite. Thanks for spreading the word about St Olaf, which calls itself the school “On The Hill,” which it is, check out any pics. And I’ll be promoting Willamette to the families around here!

@jmek15 I cut and pasted from 3 photos and placed them in “Paint” to arrange them. It’s a little tricky with cropping etc. I’m not a pro at it so it took me awhile and didn’t have the patience to fix the proportions.

Still behind and lots to comment on but @morningside95 that is a lovely idea! Definitely ok with me.

@jmek15 someone made mine for you but I can try to make a combo for you if you like. I’ll PM you.

Congrats, @CoyoteMom! I loved the story about the socks. Two years ago my D15 was choosing between Beloit and Grinnell, and I had more than a twinge when she chose Beloit. So I can totally relate to your post. But my D made the right choice for her and has been very happy there. I had to buy turtle socks for her online though!

@Gatormama, you should definitely look at Youngstown State, and maybe Kent State. Ohio Northern can also be generous and Ohio University is about $36,000 OOS with possibility of $7,000 merit.
If you are looking at Drexel, also Gannon, Duquesne and St Francis U., St Vincent is also generous, I think they have a merit estimator on the website. Lycoming gives a lot of merit as well.

Unfortunately our budget is much lower, so none of these would probably work for us, except maybe with music scholarship and merit and need based aid.

@CoyoteMom The decision dilemma is now over and CoyoteSon seems to have made the most suitable choice for himself. Fit is all-important, and I hope he has an enjoyable and productive four years at Beloit. But he’s going to miss all those cookies!

OK, so there’s been a change of heart. It’s been a dicey couple of days, but ex-H and I just sat down with D17 to revisit her college decision. It became pretty clear over the past several days that she just wasn’t feeling it, so I told her we needed to have an honest discussion about how she was feeling about it all. She confessed that she picked Denison because that’s what she felt she should pick, but that it wasn’t really where she felt she belonged. I was still struggling with the value proposition of the OOS public, but we talked it out and she’s willing to take on some minimal loans (probably around $3K a year), that depending on how things go, I might pay off at graduation (didn’t tell her that). With more skin in the game (she was already going to be working to make a contribution of about $3K/year), I feel that she will have incentive to stay focused, graduate on time, and make good use of the school’s resources to help with things like academic advising, internship placement, etc. Wish she hadn’t had the false start, and wish we had had this conversation before sending in the deposit to Denison but I am happy we were able to figure it out before May 1.

And hey, @eandesmom, we get to be UVM buddies after all! Yay!

@klinska it’s great that you all were communicating well enough to get to the bottom of things and figure out the right result in time. And I love the idea of a little UVM clique (of two?) from this thread. Congrats!

Okay, I’ll bite. What is this “avatar” of which you all speak so knowledgeably?

The one thing I learned from this thread is that I may have underestimated Techson17’s ability to get into schools of a higher caliber than the ones he did apply to. OTOH, the school he will be attending has a very good program in his field and I have never been a prestige hound so it has probably worked out for the best.
