Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@ChalkPastel Most of the schools that my son chose not to attend was because of insufficient merit aid - and he told them so. I don’t know if it will help future applicants considering the explosion of applications going on these days, but it was the truth.

@jmek15 My D17 will be attending WashU; she was a ED admit so I haven’t been on CC much, since our search ended early.

Don’t be a stranger @BlueAFMom !!!

@ChalkPastel my son responded to a couple of schools and gave honest feedback, like not enough merit, too far in the boonies, wanted to go to school in a city vs rural. etc.

** Class of 2021 Decisions/Parents of the High School Class of 2021 **
Round 2. I sincerely hope that I’ve added everyone’s info/corrections! Side note, I purposely didn’t create a new thread for 2021 decisions because I wanted to be able to have a quick reference for this thread. However, if someone thought this was thread-worthy or would prefer it to be moved, you have my blessing to copy & paste. (Edit: I have no idea why the columns disappeared. They are in my draft and stayed in the previous version, as copied from Excel. Sigh. It is what it is, I guess.).

@jmek15 --It appears the same here as the one two pages ago looked…so I never saw columns and think this is great! THANK YOU!

Thanks @jmek15; I think this provides potentially a valuable resource for others beginning the process since they can go back and (at least in some cases) trace the steps leading up to the school of enrollment, as well as potential contacts for pming with queries. Plus it’s sort of fulfilling to see the “endpoint” list for our thread.

@TimEnchanter I am so sorry you all had to go through this and hope that it’s a wakeup call. It is better to deal with this now in a “safe” environment but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing and devastating to deal with.

I worry about summer for all our kids actually, I know what mine was like after graduation as does my H. I’m attending seminar on that specific topic tonight at the HS. While I doubt it will tell me anything I don’t already know, it can’t hurt.

@jmek15 it’s fabulous! I feel your pain on formatting…

color seems to still be gone which is a huge bummer for the results thread on the 3.0 - 3.4 page.

@TimEnchanter Sounds like you are handling the situation well. Very difficult, I’m sure, and very common as well.

@eandesmom - You’ve solved a mystery. I tried to use color and thought perhaps I had formatted it incorrectly.

Glad the list is helpful! I like seeing the endpoint as well. It’s been a journey.

@jmek15 the data junkie in me loves that you sorted by school-I’m loving both the overlaps and the one of a kind attendees for all the schools.

I wonder how much we all affected each other’s kid’s choices?

Comparing the list of where kids are going with our own HS, the one that stands out as missing on the CC list is Berkeley. It is by far the one with the most matriculations at our school, but absent on this CC Parents of 2017 list.

No Ohio State or Arizona State representation either. Two of the biggest schools in the country.

Respectively, yes and (I would guess) no. (So far D17’s gotten requests that led to nearly-identical surveys from Smith, Mt Holyoke, and Kansas, and to more home-built-looking surveys from Colgate and Earlham.) It’s a good chance for her to say things like no, you were too expensive, or in the case of Earlham, to say it was a close call.

My dd17(1) will be attending Berkeley. My other daughter dd17(2) will be attending UMass Amherst, and will defer a term so that she can skate for one more season.

I’ve been mostly a lurker here, but I have so appreciated your collective wisdom!

Finally a Berkeley! :slight_smile:

Catching up…

@youcee I’m not 100% sure on the source of the $300,000 scholarship money. To my knowledge, it does not include scholarships from the colleges, as none of those, including my D17’s, were announced or included in the program. However, I think it does include 2-3 state level ones, one of which alone probably accounts for $80-100k.

5/13 QOTD: “Doc” aka Dr. Bartman. I think D took every class she teaches-biology, anatomy, biotech, EMT-I’m sure I’m missing a few. I credit her with D discovering her interest in all things medical and with feeling like she found her place at her HS.

@jmek15 Thanks for making the list!

@CaucAsianDad I had New College on my long list for D17 but eliminated it due to OOS cost.

@NolaCAR

New College was number 4 for my D. She added them to the Common App but did not apply. They sent her a handwritten note and made a very polite phone call. It made it hard for her to not apply, except that she wanted to go someplace else. Also, we are in-state but the merit aid did not work out too well for her.

Are high school Baccalaureate ceremonIes usually religious? My kid’s public high school has one, and we are trying to decide if we should go. We are not religious. At all. (Plus it conflicts with something fun for me. )

I assume so. Otherwise why have one separate from graduation?

Thanks for all the work, @jmek15! So fun to read where so many CC friends’ kids are headed in a few months! One correction: @CoyoteMom s son is attending Beloit College, not Carleton. Thanks!
