Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@Crepes that sounds wonderful that your school HS is doing a full week of orientation. I am always curious about what is offered in other states / districts. Is this a private or public school? If the latter is it urban or suburban? We are in an urban district and I have yet to hear about orientation. They did have a Spring into High School event in May of this year with the 8th graders but hoping to hear soon about details from the high school since school starts here at the end of August.

@magnetnh, itā€™s a private Catholic all-boys school in NYC suburbs. Thereā€™s another private school near us that has an optional weekend wilderness camp.

AFAIK the publics near us do just a morning or day. I just looked at the calendar for the highest-ranked public in our suburban area, Jericho HS, which is usually in the top 10 in NY and somewhere in the top 100 in the nation, and their orientation for 9th graders is a 2 1/2 hr meeting the week before classes begin. One of the top publics in NYC, Bronx Science, does a 2 hr orientation as well.

I believe the local HS does a class-by-class walkthrough the evening before the first day of school. Not much time in each class, but enough for the teacher to introduce themselves and for the kids to figure out where each class is located. Sā€™18 will have started marching band practice a few weeks before, so he shouldnā€™t feel too lost.

My D18 just knew she will go to a good college, but she doesnā€™t know what major and what school yet. Iā€™m hoping she will find her passion soon and set her mind to it. In terms of HS orientation, we wont know until HS updates the website or sending us letters. However, she already knew many people graduated from her elementary and middle school, it helps to ease her mindā€¦

A note to poll parents regarding the teaching model at their high schools. Our district is beginning to implement a competency based learning model and will move away from honors courses or track. I am wondering if any of you are in similar schools and your thoughts about this learning model? From what I have researched it seems to be the new education trend and some states are requiring it for all public schools. I am concerned on the impact it could have on college admissions as I was told there may not be grades but the student has to show mastery of the subject. Any info you could share to help ease my concerns would be appreciated. I am considering posting as a stand-alone thread but thought I would start here first.

hi everyone, i wondered today for the first time if this thread had been started, and lo and behold, already 17 pages long! i know many of you from the 2015 thread, the three year spread between kids seems to be pretty popular! anyway, i am feeling a little down as i realize how quickly time flies. my two Ds have always enjoyed an amazing sisterly bond and i worry about how that will change when D15 leaves the nest. fortunately, they will both be in the same high school next year and will start each day in the car together (the older driving the younger one). they are very different in many respects but also very similar, too. sad as it makes me to say it, i think they will have a wonderful last year together.

Iā€™m also a 2015 parent who was been watching this thread, but have not yet introduced myself. S15 is working on his college list and starting applications. D18 will be a freshman at the same school this year. That was not a given, but a choice they both made to transfer to a further school. It has some magnet-like programs that draw students from across our district. S15 is a STEM kid who is looking at a variety of schools across the country. D18 has more varied interest, but may also end up heading in a STEM direction. These two will also start most days in the car together. Because S15 is such a homebody, they have never done that before even with him driving solo for almost a year. We will find out soon how that works out. School starts in less than TWO weeks!

Add us to the list of kids starting the day in the car together. Although they will have 2020 little brother with them too. What will be the most interesting is the end of the day when 2015 D ends practice at 5 and 2018 S ends at 5:30ish. Iā€™m sure with 5 AP classes and college apps, she will not want to wait for her brother at school for a half an hour and I will have to go pick him up. I donā€™t really mind, the best conversations are always in the car :)

Hi, all! Itā€™s been many moons since I last logged in to CC. I hope youā€™re all well! My second kiddo is a class of 2018-er; his big sister is a class of 2015er. This will be a bittersweet year, as theyā€™ll both be in the same building for the first time since elementary school. Time will go by way, way, too quickly, Iā€™m sure.

S18 starts marching band practice tomorrow - noon until 9 M-TH this week. Thatā€™s his welcome to high school. Heā€™s so excited heā€™s practically jumping out of is skin (and been banging the drum all day)

D18 started school today, unfortunately with a massive head cold, so her enthusiasm was a bit muted. She is happy that she got all the classes she requested last spring (Hon Alg II, Hon Bio 1, Hon Eng, Hon Chem 1, French 1 & 2, Art, and Wellness).

Her summer consisted of a 3-week People to People trip to Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France, and a Nike Track & Field camp in Michigan. She was busy, but had great experiences.

S11 is a college senior this year, so itā€™s a big year for both of them.

I have never posted but have been reading CC for a few years and certainly have learned alot. S14 is heading off to College in a few weeks and D18 is starting HS. Thought I would join this group and start following.

Hi, @MAsecondtimerā€Œ . I have the same as you - S2014 headed off to college next week and a D2018. There are a couple of us with the same spacing and there is a 2014 group that is pretty active. Maybe Iā€™ll see you there too. Even though the older ones are done with the college search, we are still exchanging ideas and thoughts about college shopping, fraternity/sorority rush, etc.

DD2018 is visiting her grandparents in California and will be back Wednesday night. She starts bright and early Thursday morning with practice with her club soccer team, then home for a quick shower and change before heading off to cheer tryouts. She gets a quick breather after that before tumbling class in the evening. Nothing like getting a running start to the school year!

welcome @MAsecondtimer ! we will be in for a long haul together!

Thanks @mom2twotallgirls

Freshman night tonight at school and next week orientation the day before school starts. Itā€™s all starting so soon.

S18 starts school today. He goes to a Catholic school that started in 8th grade, so he has a year under his belt. Academically he was a bit up and down last year. He had the most trouble balancing his academic load when he was also in a play, due to all the nighttime practice. Hopefully he will figure it out this year, or he will have to cut back on the theater. He desperately wants a laptop, and I am thinking of rewarding him with one if he has a strong 1st quarter. Then again, he wants a laptop so he can hide in his room and play videogames. His older sister got a laptop freshman year, and his 10 yr old brother is getting a Mac Air through a new program at his middle school, so it is getting harder to deny S18.

Itā€™s official. Sā€™18 started HS this morning at 7:33. School got done at 3, percussion practice ran until 4 and he then has band practice from 5:30 until 8:30 as the first football game of the season is this Friday night. So, a busy first day of HS.

Cool! My DD1 just found out she made to the golf team so she wont need to take regular PE class. Her first day is 9/2, we are going to vacation before she starts her busy HS lifeā€¦

We also donā€™t start school until 9/2 but DD made the cheer team so she has been in practice every day since the first week of August. Add to that practices for club soccer and tumbling class and itā€™s been a very busy month already. With an older sibling, we knew that playing a fall sport meant no vacation in August!
