Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

^^^^^^^^
That totally bites!

The 2018ers at my son’s school are already being given options for next year’s class schedules. Yikes.

PSAT offered to all 10th graders in our district next Wednesday. DD1 said she has no time to prepare for it, plus it’s just practice. I hope she does well in this new format of PSAT. @HeliMom74, we didn’t even finish 1Q yet and kids is still learning to adapt teachers’ teaching styles. I’m juggling using two district grading online systems, teachers have their own preference on where they want to load their grades and how often, so hard for me to look up all grades in one system.

I think the PSAT date is nationwide, right? DD will take it and will have no prep for it either. We didn’t do any prep for DS14 either, for any standardized tests and he did well so hopefully DD will follow the same path. If not, then we’ll reassess.

We are only halfway through 1st quarter here since we don’t start until after Labor Day.

Just saw an add in the paper for a practice SAT this Saturday at the public library. We signed DD’18 up for it. We are using it for a baseline (and to shock her into practicing for next year!)

@glido, that’s smart! Our city library also offer free SAT, but DD1 refused to go because she doesn’t want her friends to know that she is actually “preparing” or “practicing”

We should look out for practice SATs here too. S18 won’t be taking the PSAT this year, his school doesn’t offer it for 10th graders and it was just too complicated to arrange for him to take it at another school. Hoping for NM commended which I think he can achieve with prep.

Hi, @crepes , check out khan academy, they offer free SAT practices as well.

My S18 is doing the online College Board practice. It is $60 for a year of access I think.

Yes, everything point to the majority of schools doing the PSAT on W 10/14. I feel bad for kids who have both Monday and Tuesday off.

If the College Board can get every high school to have every sophomore and junior take the PSAT, that’s a lot of dough. It’s free at our HS, but also mandatory.

Some of the schools are making $$$ too. Our school charges $30 for Juniors to take the PSAT. Our school has over 600 11th graders so that’s $18,000 (minus whatever the CB charges for the test) oh and our school charges and extra fee to register on line too! Two neighboring districts are free for in district 10th and 11th graders all others are $20 and one school a bit further charges everyone $15.

Yup. S’18 has PSAT at school on W. All students take it free, except Seniors who get the morning off.

Free for sophomores in our school district, $17 for juniors.

Hi, I am new to this forum. read previous forums. happy to join you all.what is DD stands for? my daughter also taking PSAT this wednesday, she is still on disney trip with her friends for fall break. she doesn’t think she need to prepare, she says its mainly for juniors.

Welcome @Sonoran!
DD= dear daughter
DS= dear son
DH = dear husband

Your DD is correct that the PSAT only really “counts” for juniors but I am of the mind that if you are going to bother to take any test you should prepare for it. National Merit is very important for my kids so they are expected to prep for it in 10th grade so they know exactly what they need to work on before the 11th grade test.

Prep for the PSAT is really a jump start on prepping for the SATs. Junior year is crazy at our high school so we try to get SATs done early. S18 will take his first SAT March 2016 and his second OCT of next year and be done with testing.

I am wondering since my S18 has not much of an idea what he wants to do with himself when he graduates HS, whether junior year will be more or less hectic

Hi fellow '18 parents! I’m a big time lurker, but it seems like a good time to come out of hiding :slight_smile:

My D is also taking PSAT this wed. She took it last year as well with no prep, just to get comfortable with the testing environment. She did pretty well, so this year, with the different test, I asked her to do some prep, because I wanted to see how she would do if she actually prepped. I asked her over the summer. So naturally, this weekend, Sunday afternoon in fact, is when she finally decided to start. 8-| So she’s not doing the practice test, just Khan Academy’s diagnostic quizzes and prep work based on that. I’m looking on the bright side that this way she can use the practice test during her prep next year

I hadn’t really thought about having her do SAT in the spring, mostly because of the new format. But I see your point @3scoutsmom she’ll have a really intense junior year as well, and I know she is not going to want to add test prep into the mix
 something to consider for sure.

Mostly a lurker in this group as well, having just sent my older D off to college this year. I needed a break! My D18 is also taking the PSAT this Wednesday, but with little to no prep. She may look over the study guide briefly. I also want her to save the practice test for next year because I think resources will be pretty scarce.

Junior year, my D15 combined PSAT and SAT prep, and took her first SAT a few weeks before the PSAT. That left plenty of time to retake the SAT if necessary, or take the ACT, or both, and it worked out well.

My DD is taking the PSAT Wednesday. All Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors take some sort of test that day. PSAT is one of the options. She took it last year. She was asked to prep, but spent about 20 minutes total. Hopefully she will improve enough from last year to help with her test prep motivation next year. She knows the financial benefits of doing well next year. That doesn’t mean she will put forth the effort tho. :frowning: We will see.

Welcome 1822mom!
The best advice I gotten about high school is to lay out a plan for all the testing and when you have the option, pick dates that work best for your kid’s schedule and take tests when your kid is when you are ready for them. The SAT is only offered 7 times a year, we rule out May because of AP’s and finals, Dec because of mid terms, January is just getting back in the groove of second semester and sports, June the kids are doing summer activities, so for our family that leaves March, Oct, Nov as the best times to take the SAT.

My d16 took her SATs in March of 10th grade and Nov of 11th grade. In hindsight she would have done just as well and had less stress if she’d taken in Oct before the PSAT so that’s what we plan to do with S18.

I know 11th grade will be crazy busy because DS has started to pick up more and more ECs and get more involved in his sport plus he’ll be taking several AP classes.

Is it bad that I can’t even remember when DS14 took the tests? I think he took the SAT in January of junior year and the ACT in the spring. He only took each one once I think and didn’t prep for either.

We’ll see how DD does with the PSAT. That will dictate what prep she does, if any. It will also inform the decision on when to take the SAT and/or ACT.
