Looks like they want 66-73 credits of prerequisites for transfer students. Depending on courses taken so far, she could probably study for and take the PCAT this summer and then apply to Rutgers pharmacy school in the fall.
@meddy I was thinking of you earlier today as Iām listening to my friends talking about their kids coming home tomorrow or Wednesday. Just think, only another 3 or 4 weeks until they are home for winter break! And then we get them for a month. Hooray!!!
Iām so happy for all of you that your kids will be home for Thanksgiving and you are so right that they will be home in no time. My girl will be home in less than a month and stay for over a whole month. Itās just that shift in life you know? It is a gift to be able to have kids, then to see them thriving and becoming wonderful humans, well on earth is there to lament? I think I will have a glass of wine and toast to this- it is well.
Happy Thanksgiving to my favorite group of college parents
@Meddy Happy Thanksgiving and more holiday hugs for you!
My D is homeā¦ and brought her boyfriend!
She seems in especially good spirits having officially changed her major. She re-registered for new classes, and the way it worked out just seemed āmeant to beā with getting into all the classes she needed for her new major, including a last open spot and the most highly recommended professors. She says her schedule is even better than what she had before with priority registration.
The really nice part is she can start the neuroscience sequence which is what she always wanted to study, and she will also start playing in the orchestraā¦and get an arts credit for it! She accidentally ran across a rehearsal recently and started talking to the director. She said she started tearing up when she realized she could play again.
I had been feeling so out of sorts when she brought up changing her major, but it seems like everything is falling into place and in a way thatās good for her.
We have our S home for a whole week, although itās going by fast. My wife didnāt have to go all the way to Ithaca to pick him up; his gfās mom brought him part of the way down. Heāll take the bus back up on Sunday. I think itās supposed to be snowing up there then, but not too much by Ithaca standards.
Hello everyone! It has been a long time since I posted on here. Things have been pretty crazy and our lives have been turned upside down the last 18 months. D18 is thriving at Univ of Miami (FL). She is in the Frost Band of the Hour and it allows her to meet a lot of people from other majors. It was a godsend that OU changed their NM program or else I think she would have chosen OU instead. Itās nice having her 3 hrs away (close but not too close). The meteorology program and broadcast program there have been great. She already has taken 5 met classes, 2 in forecasting. Itās a small program with a lot of opportunity.
She has found her tribe which is so greatā¦I am truly happy for her. We did have our usual September slump so her brother and I took a trip down to cheer her up for movie and lunch.
She is home this week and leaves tomorrow but comes back in a week and a half for break. Weāre waiting to see what bowl game the Hurricanes get into to see where her Christmas break gets interrupted since she has to perform with the marching band.
She has done well dealing with rigor of the classesā¦it was a shock Freshman year but now loves that curve. Sheās hoping for a good one for Lin Alg.
Sheās thinking about staying in Miami for grad school so now thatās a whole new thing to think about. S23 will be starting the process for college as she is finishing college and thinking grad schoolā¦no stress ?
DD coming home today with another semester under her belt. She is going to work doing swimming lessons to little kiddos over the break so she should not get bored.
I hope all of our kids have safe travels over the break and a great holiday season.
S arrived home today and the first thing he did was to vote!! First time in a general election and he says heās been following it from across the pond. Hope he gets the result he wantsā¦ but little chance of that I think!
Home for 4 - count them 4 - weeks and girlfriend is flying in on 28th. Itās her first time to the UK and we are all looking forward to welcoming her.
He says heās pooped. That this term has been hard work, but he has enjoyed it. He is looking forward to doing nothing. Doing nothing - in his dreams - we are moving in April and he has to go through all his stuff and CULL and all before Christmas!
@burghdad I had no idea how fast this would all go! Crazy. Iām already ramping up for D21ās college process. Great idea to teach swim on the long break. D18 always says her brain is melting when home for too long lol. I suspect though that she will be doing lots of work- looking for a future internship and seeking the right study abroad program.
@Whistlingal Oh, seems like on both sides of the pond kids are hoping for different outcomes in elections. D18 says lots more work this year, but thankfully most all classes were interesting to her. Enjoy the cleaning out of his old stuff. I just brought a large box of stuffies to her former school to organize a āpetā adoption clinic for littles
All of you- Happy Holidays! Hug them tight. Savor each moment. Step over the shoes and ignore the mess. As the song goes, āThese are the days.ā BTW who can name the artist?
@Meddy What kind of study abroad program is your D interested in? Something where she will beef up her language skills or something where she will gain other kinds of knowledge. And will she do this in the summer, a semester, or a school year? Sorry to ask so many questions! Iām so interested in the choices the kids make, and why, and Iām so happy for them that there are so many different opportunities now.
Back when we were all looking for colleges for our 2018 kids, I attended an info session by Trinity Dublin, and there was a guest parent there whose child was attending a US college and decided to take a gap year between Sophmore and Junior years of college to attend Trinity Dublin rather than do this as part of their college curriculum. I thought that was a really interesting choice to do it that way, rather than to do it as part of her college degree. The parents said that their daughter was getting so much out of her US college education, that they didnāt want to shorten her 4 years there. I also think that their daughter was trying out a slightly different field of study, to decide what she wanted to do, and then the plan was when she came back she would pick her major and use all the wonderful resources at her US college to try to get internships and advising in the chosen field.
I totally understand what those Trinity parents were thinking! I feel like my daughterās college offers so many opportunities to the kids. I wish that after college is over, that our kids would have the same level of support and advisement to help them.
@melvin123 Yes! Loved them, too. D18 wants it all! Ha! She would like to immerse herself in a Spanish speaking country to improve her fluency, but surprised me when she was not looking at the most oft sought after countries. I think she is interested in the culture and politics of Mexico, but trying to find an approved program, I think will be quite a task.
Interesting discussion about study abroad. Iāve never heard of taking a gap year to do a year elsewhereāvery intriguing idea, especially if you are not in a hurry to graduate.
My D is about to submit her application for an entire year at U Edinburgh. She started college with a lot of AP credits, and she has taken a total of zero electives so far, so she has a lot of wiggle room with her degree plan. She could just take all electives at Edinburgh and still graduate on time, but she will take an algorithms class that is required for her degree but is absolutely brutal at McGill, her home university. (A benefit I suppose of doing the abroad year as a part of your degree program.)
Why Edinburgh?
Itās one of the best schools in the world for what she studies (Linguistics/Computational Linguistics).
D considered applying there two years ago. I talked her into a year through study abroad instead.
She has been to Edinburgh before and loves everything about it.
She is fascinated with the rich linguistic history and dialects of Scotland.
A childhood friend is going to college in Scotland (not Edinburgh, but nearby) and they are excited to travel around Europe together on breaks.
D flies home tomorrow! We donāt get to see her for Thanksgiving, so itās been a long time.
S should be heading home in a couple of ours. My wife if taking him, his gf, and a couple of their friends to lunch. I think the snow in the Ithaca area ended up being not quite as bad as expected, and it doesnāt look like the trip home this afternoon should be too bad. We have our annual after Christmas beach trip, and heās going to a Ravens playoff game in January. Heāll be heading back during the MLK weekend.
