Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Well glad to see and hear the updates on a few. D18 finally had an internship come through. She was really wanting to fly back to the East Coast to do it in person, in the end she settled on working remotely. We nearly insisted she do it remotely to be honest, but she went from adamant to amenable in the span of a couple of weeks. Several reasons, not the least of which is reinforced by some of your Covid scares.

Hoping that this all passes so she can get back to Amherst in August. No plans finalized yet, other than classes in some form will begin earlier than usual. Oh and the college purchased large tents to hold classes. I sure hope they have AC!

Ithaca wonā€™t be starting until October, so our S will end up being here for 6 months (taking into account the time spent with GFā€™s family). That certainly wasnā€™t expected, but itā€™s the reality for parents of college students right now.

I enjoyed reading everybodyā€™s recent updates! My D18 remained in Ithaca, NY for the summer. She had an internship with an on-campus organization that she completed remotely, so all meetings and communications were done via computer. She is also a TA for a summer online class. She has been doing a lot of outdoor activities at the lake and on the hiking trails when not working & we Facetime often. She seems quite happy with her decision to remain. She sublet a room in a house just outside the campus and has had no problem with buying groceries and whatever else she needs. Weā€™re just waiting until Cornell puts out their plan for the fall semester to decide what comes next.

@LMHS73 Ithaca in the summer is just gorges! ?
Seriously, though, that sounds like a great way to spend the summer and that sheā€™ll have happy memories of this time.

@LMHS73 refresh our recollection on what your D18 is studying at Cornell.

@burghdad sheā€™s in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics & Management & her current concentration is data analytics. I think they finalize their concentrations at the beginning of junior year.

@LMHS73 Nice. Is she looking to go to graduate school

@burghdad I guess it will depend on her employment prospects at graduation. Traditionally, most kids go into their field for 3-5 years before going back for their MBA. But, with this new normal we all find ourselves in, weā€™ll just have to wait and see and take things as they come.

Welp friends, Amherst announced their plans for the start of the year and it did not include Juniors coming back to campus in August. That was a punch in the stomach. The town hall zoom meeting clarified some things and in the end, someone had to be left out and Juniors, along with Senior graduating in May seemingly drew the short straw. They do have the opportunity to return in the Spring and anyone else who didnā€™t get on campus in the Fall.

The good thing is D18 managed to get a remote internship that is proving to be excellent experience in her field of interest with good use of her Spanish. However, she hates being so far from her Amherst friends. Sadness, anger and frustration were at an all time high this week in our household. What can we do? Schools can make all the plans it wants, but Covid will have the final say, right? Strange times we are living in.

Thatā€™s a real bummer.

As far as my D is concerned, UMich is bringing everyone back. The lecture of one of four of her classes is remote, but otherwise UMich seems to be reconfiguring classrooms and having in person instruction for her classes.

Of course, they raised tuition 1.9% and are charging a special $50 Covid-19 fee. So thereā€™s that.

11 more days until we hearā€¦

@Meddy Im sorry your D wonā€™t be going on campus in the Fall; hopefully it will only be 1 semester. But thatā€™s really terrific that she had such a good internship. Itā€™s good to see our kids doing something.

@Meddy That sucks. I heard Dartmouth only bringing Freshman and either Juniors or Seniors I canā€™t remember which

Waiting with bated breath to hear if Sonā€™s college goes on line next term. If it does he will have to return home as his visa will be invalid.

Good news.
So far they are planning to return to campus for in-person classes

Waiting here too. Son finished his summer classes, is doing mostly outside activities with his friends, today itā€™s golf.

Hoping that he can return to campus, so far his school is planning on a hybrid model of in person classes and online.

He is going to be living off campus this year.

Oldest started her third pharmacy rotation, first one in person. I am hoping she can finish it in spite of a recent uptick in local cases.

We are not sure what the local high school will do about fall.

Since my last post, college has gone to on-line:)

Luckily ICE has rescinded the ruling, so S is staying.

House mates are joining him at the end of the month as well as they have spent over 4 months at home and I think are itching to get away. So we are happy he will have company.

He seems upbeat when we talk to him.

Thatā€™s great@whistlingal! Iā€™m glad itā€™s working out for your S!

Well, Iā€™m not very happy about college these days. I wanted our D to take a gap year, but my D doesnā€™t want to take a break in her studies & my H canā€™t agree more with her. So, no gap year.

Then I wanted to turn our house over to her & her friends since all the classes will also be offered on-line, but all her friends wanted to go back on campus. All of her friends are STEM majors and they all think they will get to be in their labs doing research and getting to be live TAs. Our D, on the other hand, believes that the Fall is going to be a miserable experience, with them having to quarantine multiple times. And the quarantining sounds very isolating; you have to move to a different dorm, and Iā€™ve heard that they drop off 5 days worth of boxed food at a time. So, she wanted to stay home and do us the favor of saving the dorm fees. We had a lot of back & forth about all this, but ultimately I didnā€™t want her to stay home while all her college friends were back on campus. I really didnā€™t think that would be good. And who knows, maybe the kids CAN still do science labs, and can still do their TAing live? Who knows? I guess weā€™ll see how it goes in a couple of months.

Iā€™m happy for those of you whose kids banded together to rent a house. I think they will all have a much better experience, and it will be safe. I just wish my kid were able to do the same thing.

S18ā€™s schedule at FSU appears set now. Choir and Opera Workshop are in person. Everything else, including sadly his private voice lessons, will be online. Hoping the voice faculty can switch to in person when Florida improves. It amazes me they are willing to try to conduct choir rehearsals but not one on one voice lessons. S18 will be living off campus with a friend who is very careful, so I am not too worried about him.

@vistajay Iā€™m surprised that Choir & Opera workshops are in person!
