Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

Hello all! Just checking in and welcome to everyone who popped in on this board. Been having fun with my d14 in first year college and my d16 getting ready to start college applications. But my S19 decided not to do the early college Academy after all because he wanted more options for classes. He would like to take marine biology and environmental science at some point and did not want to take the Spanish which was required so now he will be taking French. He is very excited now. we also found out he can start taking college classes in 10th grade and we liked this better because he can pick which college classes to take, not the schedule that is required and set up for students who do early college Academy. It just goes to show you you have to do whatā€™s right for each individual child. Hope everyone is doing well!

Quite a few 19ā€™ers! Weā€™re making plans for the summerā€¦I had hoped we could take a REAL vacationā€¦but I donā€™t think itā€™s going to happen. Is 14 too young to work?

Cant believe my oldest is going to be a freshman next year. Below will be her school work load.
AP - History
Honors - Geometry
Honors - English
Honors - Physics
Honors Principles of Engineering
Spanish 2
Gym - ( with a semester of swimming which everyone hates)
Probably missing something

She is also on an ECNL soccer team but in an age group that is not taking a break for High School soccer (Fall) So on top of the grades she will have to juggle to different soccer teams. The ECNL team is an hour drive for practices.
We figure with this workload and the soccer commitment it will be a very tough fall for her. ( and us!!)

@gkparent2019 looks like a great schedule! Engineering seems intriguing. I think my S might try that one yearā€¦another pls for his not choosing eca in our school.

Hey. I was active in the Parents of 2012 thread, and then burned out and disappeared for a while. Now itā€™s time to spend another four years obsessing about this stuff, all the while not being entirely certain it matters much!

It was great reading everyone elseā€™s schedules for next year. Some scary good students.

I currently have a junior at University of Chicago and an 8th grader who is a very different student. DD was a model kid, but DS is, um, less so. Heā€™s going to be fine once his frontal lobe comes together, but right now heā€™s an impulsive, unfocused mess, consumed by his social world and extracurricular passions, but an inconsistent student.

His freshman schedule is shaping up like this:

Regular Geometry
Regular Physics
Latin 1
Honors English
Honors World History 1 (Ancient World)
Elective (hoping for Drawing 1)
Elective (hoping for Photography 1)

My experience with DDā€™s high school class is that this process almost always has a VERY happy ending, so Iā€™m committed to being positive this time, loving the kid on the couch, and not defining ā€œhappy endingā€ too narrowly. Weā€™ll see how I do. 8-|

D19 came home with her class list for next year:
Honors English
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Bio 1
Honors World History 1 (still needs teacher signature)
Spanish 2
Elective - hoping for Drawing & Illustration
Elective - hoping for Ballet/Pointe

The school is finally moving into a new building this coming school year, so she is excited about that.

Welcome @Angrydad! Great advice about happy endings. I will use that for my last D who has trouble academically whereas my others have no trouble.

@scholarme looks great!!!

Finally feeling comfortable with where Dā€™15 is at on the college decision front so turning some of my attention to Dā€™19. We scheduled her classes back in March:

Honors English
Honors Geometry
Honors Biology
Spanish 1
Theology 1
Band
PE/Health

Dā€™19 is a completely different student than my other 3 - very social, very academic, more sports orientated. She will be trying out for the volleyball team which, if she makes it will mark the first time I will have someone playing sports in HS. Her need for learning and doing and being apart of things should make for a very interesting 4 years!

@ILMom13579 - I also have a D15 & D19
D19 is also more social than her older sister. She is also bossier, LOL. She tells my D15 - pick this college! D15 will explain her objections. Then D19 will say, nevermind, just commute to this other college so you can keep helping me with homework!
They have a great relationship and I know they will miss each other a lot.

Iā€™m another who has a D15 and D19. Just came back from Admitted Students Day at D15ā€™s LAC, which she was admitted to ED1. D19 is of course a different individual with her own unique personality. We debated extensively whether to send her to high school at the charter school she currently attends or the public HS where D15 attends. We finally settled on the public high school, mainly based on D19ā€™s preference. Weā€™ve requested the following schedule:

English 1 (regular, not doing honors for this one)
Biology 1 Honors
Geo/Trig Honors
French 1
PE (required)
Choir 1 (fulfills the Fine Arts requirement and was a motivation for changing from the charter school which didnā€™t have any choir EC)

I look forward to 4 fun years for D19!

We had a similar discussion - should D19 go to big public HS which has more AP and EC opportunities or stay in charter school. D19 said she wanted to stay in the charter with her friends, and since her friends are good kids who work hard in school, we acceded to her wishes. She really did not want to switch schools.

D19 this morning when it was just the two of us ā€œWhy is (D15) going to (X Univ)? I donā€™t know what she sees in that school!ā€ I was surprised because mostly when sheā€™s dragged on college trips with her sister sheā€™s buried in her phone with earbuds on. I didnā€™t realize she had formed strong opinions on the colleges we were visiting.

Interesting. My D19 acted grouchy on D15ā€™s college trips but maybe she was still absorbing something. Her charter school does not offer APā€™s, although I actually thought that that fact was a plus because Iā€™m not sure D19 will excel at standardized testing like her big sister did. Also she had only gone to the charter school for 8th grade, so she has lots of friends who will be at the public high school. I liked the charter school and wouldā€™ve been happy to keep her there if sheā€™d wanted to stay, but there is no choice of electives whatsoever and the ECā€™s are very limited.

D19 is worried because her Spanish teacher hasnā€™t told her yet if she is recommending her for Spanish 2 instead of Spanish 1 next year. Considering that sheā€™s been taking Spanish since Kinder, it seems cruel to have her take Spanish 1 with beginners - they basically covered all the material already in 7th grade.

Itā€™s true about the Spanish teacher - I emailed and found out. This is ridiculous! puts on warpaint

@scholarme I hear you about Spanish. Our school keeps reteaching the same stuff so it would be cruel to make them take Spanish 1. My S is so sick of Spanish heā€™s starting French in hs lol.

@cakeisgreat if her school offered any other world language sheā€™d sign up in a minute!
Good news though, after a couple of emails teacher acknowledged that D19 meets requirements to be in Spanish 2. Crisis averted!

^^whew! Thank God!

Is your kid artistic? I started a thread asking for thoughts on how to guide artistic kids - if anyone is interested:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1772686-how-do-you-guide-an-artistic-kid.html#latest

@scholarme thank youā€¦my kid is artistic so Iā€™m heading over to read the discussion!

Oh wow there is already a thread for these kids?

I have a D who is a rising college junior studying Astrophysics, a S who is a rising senior and my youngest D, a rising freshman. We are trying for an out of district for high school (S is on one). If they donā€™t approve it Dā€™19 may just be homeschooled. Our zoned HS is not good.

She will be entering HS with 8 HS credits from middle school.
