@MinnieFan Congratulations on DD’s acceptance. Great feeling to have one in the bag early. I am sure it’s a sigh of relief to be done with all applications…now the wait.
@MinnieFan , that’s great to have one in the bag already. You were smart to send some away earlier.
We didn’t send any away until 9 last week, so it will a few weeks before the first replies come back. 3 are expected “yes”, 3 are likely/maybe, and the other 3 are ones that wouldn’t surprise me at all to be “No.” I’m worried about all of them. We’ll send a few more next week, but most of his true favorites were in the first bunch.
Good luck to everyone.
@EconPop Sounds like he has a good mix of likelies/matches/reaches. My son is also applying to 9. My prediction is that he will get into 4 (already into 2), will not get into 3 and 2 could go either way. Good luck!
We have one yes so far…2 I think will be no…3 I am not sure at all…3 I think yes and the others could go either way.
It’s October 28th- fire up, mom and dad! Anyone still pushing their kid to finish 11/1 submissions? We are almost there. She just needs to proof the app. I think she’s stalling just to watch me squirm. Last kid. I’m tired.
A friend I ran into said she’s taking the whole week at home (usually travels for her job every week) in order to get son to complete applications this week. He’s a top student but a procrastinator.
You aren’t alone, @Momofmanytoo
May your internet connections stay strong all that are working towards 11/1! 11/1 applications all in here but digging deep to finish the scholarship that must be snail mailed by 11/1, and the two others that are due online by 11/8 and 11/15. I’ve told DD20 to not plan on any common app access until after 11/1. She can check on download status of her applications after that date but needs to stay out of the way for others still working.
First time posting. S is in this GPA range with pretty good SAT scores. He has applied to most of his schools already, including Oregon. He completed that application on 10/15. How long did it take to hear back from Oregon? He did hear back and was accepted to four schools so far: Univ. of Arizona, ASU, Biola, and Westmont. What a relief!
DS submitted his last 5 on Friday. Well, I hope that was our last five, unless we start getting any “no’s” in which case we will be widening our net. He finally got to a point where he stopped editing and just said this is it, and hit send. Fingers crossed! We may hear from one soon but the other 4 won’t be until January, which is hard, but I am glad to be done.
So, things keep changing on our end. S20 applied to 3 Cal State schools a few weeks ago, but had really decided to go the community college route with a possible transfer to a UC school. I had wrapped my mind around this, and was even starting to embrace the idea (especially the financial side of things).
Then, while just the 2 of us were driving this weekend, S20 mentions that one of his best buddies is planning to attend Sonoma State if he gets accepted (which he should based on stats). Sonoma was S20’s favorite Cal State after we visited and is one of the 3 he applied to. He said they chatted about how they could request each other as roommates, and he confided to me that having a friend to go with would take away his biggest fear around going away to school.
I’m very torn now and am trying not to sway him one way or the other. Heading to a 4 year is what I always thought he would do and I also liked Sonoma State when visiting. But financially it will be tougher for us and he knows that (and that he would need to take out the Federal loans). I’m already job seeking after running my own online retail business from home for 8 years. I have some final interviews this week and if one of those pans out, the financial piece will look better. Heading to a community college and then transferring to a UC would save us some money and give him a more prestigious degree when he’s done. But he would delay gaining the independence that comes with living away from home.
He is planning on a Psych major with grad school a distinct possibility. Would you offer advice to your child, or just keep quiet? I simply told him that he still has time to think all this through, that if he gets in to Sonoma, he can go visit again before he needs to make a final decision, and that we can make the finances work either way.
My son sent all his apps in on 8/1 and got his Oregon acceptance about two weeks ago. He was also accepted to Oregon State, Washington State, and Arizona. He’s decided on Arizona and we’ve already paid the deposit. He really wants to get into one of the suite-style dorms.
What is your son’s first choice (if he knows)?
@thedreamydaisy I would make sure to go over the impact of the finances and how taking out loans will affect him down the road to make sure he’s understanding that side of it. But otherwise I would stay out of it unless asked. I’m not a big believer in the importance of prestige, especially at the level of a UC vs Sonoma State. I’m also a big believer in the benefits of living away from home during college, so if it was my son, I’d be encouraging Sonoma State over CC if anything.
Good luck!
@Johnny523 thanks for the input! I do think I’ll try to stay out of it unless he asks. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Another acceptance for S20 so that’s 2 in the bag for him…plus a guaranteed spot on the soccer team at VMI!! D20 still has 2 in the bag but was told she should know by end of November from her top choice…so finger’s crossed. We could really use any and all good news right now.
Due to family emergency we had to back burner other EA apps and I still haven’t finished the FAFSA. Luckily we have most apps/essays done and have some cushion time before deadlines approach.
I find it fascinating seeing the kids’ thought processes through this - what’s important to them and what isn’t, how they want to approach it, etc.
@mify2020 my son heard back from Oregon about 3 weeks after submitting his app. A few days later he found out he got $7500/year!
For others accepted to Oregon, have you gotten the official packet yet. He has not, just gotten emails.
My D got an acceptance to Butler. Her SAT was a little low, so it was a nice surprise for her to get some merit. Perhaps applying early really does help. Or maybe it was her extracurriculars. Still waiting to hear on her ED app.
@murray93 Congratulations! How long did it take you to hear from Butler? My D is applying there EA as well but hasn’t submitted yet. She has the opposite stats, good ACT score but lousy EC’s.
Where did she ED?
@murray93 Congratulations to your daughter!!! My son also heard from Butler and received some very nice merit aid----such an ego boost for a kid with decent grades but only slightly above average test scores at an uber competitive high school where it seems like everyone else has perfect everything. He does have some solid ECs (sports, volunteer and work) but not many. Butler would be a great option for him but we too are waiting on an ED decision. @MAmom111 my son applied on September 28th and heard from Butler on October 25th. I hope that helps.
For the kids who have been accepted into Butler–it looks like their average accepted GPA last year was 3.77 and 76% were 3.5 and higher–just curious if anyone’s child has a lower GPA than the 3.5 and still got an acceptance? Trying to figure out how much my D21’s test scores and ECs will offset her low (under 3.0) GPA.
