@cshell2 - thanks. Ugg…yes, S20 and D20 have been getting reminder emails to file the FASFSA. So, add that the list of many things for me to take care.
Getting Thanksgiving catered is looking better and better…even though I love to cook my own food - it’s my favorite holiday.
Yeah…all of D20’s EA applications are submitted. I caved and let her remove app to JMU (my alma mater) as she wants smaller school and thought campus was too big. In the end it’s true, she’ll do better in smaller school. Now all that’s left is RD app to W&M which is the hail mary reach school. Her grades have significantly improved so you never know.
S20 still needs to do VMI app as he was recruited already to play soccer at VMI - yeah!
Not soon enough! Is anyone else antsy about the wait? S20 did 6 apps by 11/1 and should hear from 5 of them by 12/31. That just seems so far away!! I don’t remember the wait being so hard with D17 but I have no doubt it was, especially since she applied ED to just one school and didn’t want to bother working on any other apps until she heard back.
Keeping my fingers crossed for good news for all your DCs in the coming months.
Can I share a proud mom moment? S has stats in the lower range of this thread. Got his ACT score this week and it was a 32! He also made first honors this quarter (yay!).
@murray93 and @jahm1820 My D got accepted to Butler last week. We are flying in for a visit tomorrow to visit Butler & Depauw on Monday. Didn’t know when I booked the trip that she would already be accepted. Just curious if you have visited and if you had any thoughts on the school? We are from the east coast and few people have heard of these schools.
No, we have not visited but I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen so far. Their True Blue visit program for arts students (my D applied as a music major) is unique and sounds very cool. Be sure to report back on your impressions and congrats to your D!
I’m feeling very envious as I catch up here. My D has not yet finished her common app essay…She did, however, ask me to sign her up for the December SAT for one final shot at improving her score. That showed some initiative. Twenty more points will guarantee a scholarship at her first choice.
Lately I have been having these moments of wondering if she will be able to manage life at college because she is so organizationally challenged. And will a roommate be able to put up with her mess…but her friends have told me she cleans at their houses…maybe there’s hope…
@Momofmanytoo She applied to Butler for journalism and Depauw for English. Also interested in psychology so I think she is more “undecided” than anything else.
@MACmiracle I have a lot of those moments with my D as well. She’s a bright girl but totally lacks organization/time management. She eventually gets everything done but seems to make everything more difficult than it needs to be. And God help her roommate with her messiness. She claims she is going to be neat in college but I’m not sure I see that happening based on the current state of her room.
@taverngirl Congrats to your S! That is awesome. Should hopefully open up some more doors for acceptances and merit $$.
After being accepted at Arkansas, Nebraska, University of Kansas and Mizzou, my daughter this weekend told me she wants to go to Mizzou and officially enrolled. I’m really happy since she was awarded a $50,000 scholarship to attend Mizzou. But I wanted it to be her choice and tried not to put any pressure on her about it. So GO TIGERS!
S20 just received his first acceptance to Cal State East Bay for Psychology. I am shocked it came through so early as the Cal States tend to be slow in general and their application window is still open until 11/30.
He is still planning on community college at this point, but this would give him a 4 year option that he could commute to if he was interested in going that route while still living at home.
Update on D20’s acceptances - now have Radford, Roanoke and Longwood in the bag. Still waiting on her top 2 choices. But she seems happy and that’s all that matters to me right now, not the unfortunate NOVA peer pressure of school ranking.
S20 currently has Radford, Longwood, VMI and ODU. And although he didn’t receive a formal acceptance letter yet, he received invitation to join CNU’s Presidential Leadership Program and Honors Program, so am assuming acceptance will roll in for CNU, hopefully. CNU has crept up to being a good top pick; however, he is still holding out to hear about being recruited to play soccer, which to my dismay is still playing a big part of his decision.
I had a son who graduated from high school in 2019 with a GPA that is squarely in this range and a D who graduated in 2008 with a GPA at the higher end of this range. We live in California and out here in the West there are plenty of great schools for kids in this GPA range. A lot of people don’t know how many great schools there are in the Western US for kids in this GPA range.
Here is a list of schools that our family looked at out west during our college search. My kids also applied and got into a good number of them. They didn’t end up applying to every single one, but a lot of these would be good schools for kids in this GPA range. I’ll also list some schools we didn’t look at, but I’ve heard are good.
Northern Arizona University
Western Washington University
Colorado State University
Southern Oregon University
Oregon State
University of Nevada Reno
Sonoma State
Linfield College
Western Colorado University
University of Montana
Montana State
University of Wyoming
University of Idaho (this is becoming a popular choice in our area. My H has a co worker whose kid just applied here and really wants to go. And a few kids in S’s class applied and got in. My D has a friend whose sister just started her freshman year here)
Congrats @scoutmom2002! I actually went to Longwood and loved it! Very surprised to see it listed on CC but it is a hidden gem.
Now that I am in California, I wish we had some Longwood and CNU type colleges for my D to apply to that are state schools. We have some out here but they are private and very expensive.
@MommaCat – to be honest…I grew up in VA and lived here my entire life…had never heard of Longwood until I walked into my then 7th grader’s counselor’s office and saw the Longwood Pennant hanging on his wall. Ironically, my kids’ middle school mascot is Lancers too!! Seeing the Pennant peaked my interest to learn more about Longwood and now here we are…I added Longwood to the the college visit list as my D20 was looking for a smallish school.
Still waiting to hear back from other picks UMW (for D20) and CNU (for both). But it’s a great feeling to know they each already have some place that wants them.
Plan is to visit again in the Spring on “admit days” and try to spend night, sit in on a class, talk to professor in their major of interest, etc. Then they will be able to hopefully make a well informed decision.
Feeling blessed to be in VA with so many public university options of Small, Medium and Large.
