Parents of the HS Class of 2020 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@amymariemom23 UHart sounds like a great option. We recently visited and were happily surprised by how much we liked it. It should be a safety for her, and I’ve heard they give merit to most everyone who is accepted.

We are visiting Drexel and Rowan next weekend and Widener in April if you have input on those. Have a son in the 3.0 range who wants civil engineering. No test scores yet.

MAmom111 yeah in psychology math matters.Psychology is a science.

@taverngirl Thanks for the input on University of Hartford. I have to get that tour scheduled. My husband taught at Drexel in previous semesters. It has a very good reputation and the campus is walkable. Located in Philly so there is lots to do. If your son wants a more urban setting that would meet that need. My husband teaches at Rowan now (and I went there years ago). It is a very good school, especially for engineering. The campus is easily walkable and they have added a lot of shops and restaurants. A friend’s son just got accepted there and Villanova (my husband teaches there as well…he gets around!) but they are choosing Rowan because he was offered a full ride and because of it’s reputation in engineering. My kids don’t want to go there solely because their dad teaches there! I don’t know as much about Widener except that my sister in law went there and loved it and that it also has a good reputation. Sorry I don’t have more specifics. Good luck on your visits.

@amymariemom23 Thank you!

DS grades have been strong his junior year. He wants to visit University of South Florida but hasn’t identified anywhere else yet. He went on tours with DS16 so he doesn’t feel the need to revisit some places. We will see how the list grows over the next few months.

Hi there. My first post. We are in MA. DS is interested in Computer Science. I am struggling to figure out acceptance rates into Computer Science programs. As I understand that major would have a lower acceptance rate than a university as a whole.

Welcome @readinghere! D20 is my fourth kid and I’ve been in and out of college confidential for a long time  I’ve learned so much.

I posted this on the College of Charleston website, but thought I’d post here as well because it’s a school that can meet our kids’ stats I think and our family really liked it. We toured back in July and D20 liked it but does not really like the city environment with her social anxiety…she still might apply depending on where we are living at the time (might be relocating), but it is one of S19’s top contenders. Going to accepted students day and will report back if anyone is interested. If S19 does not end up choosing CofC it’ll be because he decides against a city environment or wants the football game thing or closer to home. Pretty far from our house right now, but S19 can handle that.

Here goes: Our tour back in July was done very well. Received a bag of info and a collapsible water bottle from some very friendly and happy students who checked us in. Liked the video reel of college success trivia while waiting for the info session. Tour guide was great, decently knowledgeable about the school. Liked the business building and the hospital right near one of the academic buildings for my pre-med interested kid. Charleston area is beautiful and looks really fun.

Going to accepted students day this weekend and will report back anything additional. I am interested in hearing about dorms/accommodations, athletics, internships/research, etc. Wanted to mention also that the marketing has been done well and at the right times. S19 getting calls/emails from departments encouraging him to stop by at accepted students day (but not too many calls/emails). The math/science department is hosting their own lunch and going on tour together. Will receive a tshirt at there as well.

@cakeisgreat enjoy Accepted Student Day. We are going in April. What you describe is consistent with every interaction that my family has had with CofC. The attention, friendliness and interest by faculty is what sealed the deal for my DS16. We made a special trip a year ago with DS19 so he could see what opportunities he would also have. We met with representatives with the Historic Preservation Department and someone in the Computing in the Arts program. DS19 attended a class as well. We have not experienced this level of interest by faculty at any other school that we have toured. Two came close , Flagler College and Wofford College. Interesting to note, both of those are private and CofC is public. Good luck today.

@carolinamom2boys Thanks! We had a blast today at Accepted Students Day. You’ll see I wrote up some thoughts while I can still remember them. I definitely saw today also that faculty love working there. I did not see the Historic Preservation Dept today - S19 will definitely love getting involved in that.

I can see why you love CofC so much. It really is a great school!

Had time for a quick tour over at the aquarium which was fun. They said a lot of CofC students volunteer there. Just so much to do!

I love CofC, just don’t want to pay out of state tuition :frowning:

@ITBgirl I hear ya. The good news for S19 is that CofC gave enough merit to be close to instate tuition yey!

Thought I’d share…am reposting here because these are great summer programs (in VA) that don’t break the bank and don’t require high academic stats/long essays for admission.

Hi, just thought I’d introduce myself. My D has a B+ GPA with a moderately rigorous courseload. She took the ACT in March and got a 22. Ran out of time on every section, but what she answered was perfect LOL. PSAT was in the 1100s so hoping for 1200 or so on the May test. She’s a good writer, dedicated athlete, and very accomplished musician.

She has been extremely difficult when it comes to discussing higher education. She flat out refuses to study for the SAT and it has become a huge point of contention. Shows very little interest in visiting or learning about colleges — “it’ll all work out”. I’m at a loss here.

We live in a state with VERY few SLACs and that is where I’d like her to go. I gave her a list of schools to consider and she turned up her nose or showed disinterest in all but Puget Sound. So a trip has been scheduled and I’m hoping she likes it. I would very much like for her to go ED somewhere that’s a sure bet and she can do the one app and be done with this process. She’s been beyond difficult so far. Is anyone familiar enough with UPS to chance her?

@murray93 My D20 ran out of time on the ACT three times. Not just leaving a few questions blank, but leaving entire columns blank. She found the SAT more to her liking. She took it a few days ago and finds out her score later this week. Hopefully it will be a huge improvement over the ACT. At any rate, she only left four math questions blank (filled them in with B’s) and no ELA questions blank. Saying that to say that hopefully your slower test taker will be able to finish the SAT.

Thank you! This is exactly what happened to my D. I couldn’t believe it! She had a private tutor who worked on her with timing and everything. And just when I had given up on her studying at all, she cracked a book this weekend. ?

@murray93 My S19 was admitted EA to UPS with a 3.5, with good merit. Granted, he had pretty strong test scores, but I know the school is test optional, which means your D would have to write essays as an alternative. My S also has a strong EC, though no real leadership. I’m not sure if the merit was awarded for the test score or the EC, but I think a B+ student certainly has a good chance, especially ED. Also, they have an excellent music program, and the fact that your D is a musician would certainly appeal. Maybe a visit will inspire her? My S19 was similarly unmotivated with the college process. Visits really helped, and I think including a variety of types of colleges is key (even if they say they don’t want it). Some kids just don’t have the life experience to know what they want, and there is a lot of pressure on them to make decisions about something they feel unequipped to respond to, so they just shut down. Or that’s certainly been my experience! Good luck.

@daisychayn Yes, you have described the situation perfectly! A shutdown is 100% where she’s at. We are looking at UPS for all the reasons you mention. I am absolutely aware it’s test optional ? and she should do great with the extra essays. Her music background is VERY strong. I know she just wants to pick an ED and not think about the whole process anymore, and I’d be 100% on board with that. We just need to find the right school, preferably as quickly as possible?. Thanks for the comments, and is your S thinking about attending?

It may be a little early for this but how many schools do your 2020 kids plan to apply to?

My S20 has one school he really wants, one reach and so far three safeties. I am waiting to get his ACT before I really narrow down our list. We are going to an Open House in a few weeks to yet another safety and I worry I may be wasting our time, but I want to see if he loves or hates it.

D20 is hoping to have an ED option. I want her to apply to two other matches/high matches EA for backup which she will need to withdraw if she gets in ED. If the ED comes back negative, then we will reevaluate and start applying to more safeties and matches in the RD round.
