Same @makemesmart swimming. DD has been on one unofficial visit and is in communication with several coaches. She will email coaches on her list with a compilation/update of her “stuff” hopefully later today. I did use 750 for the subject test scores, although she hasn’t taken any yet.
@MAandMEmom
Good luck to our kids with fast swimming and good stats go hand-in-hand!
@makemesmart I can drink to that! Best of luck to your DS.
Small world. My kids are swimmers as well. Although neither of my kids would be recruited for swimming, several of their classmates and friends from club swim have received nice packages from top schools. My oldest claimed he wasn’t going to swim in college but quickly joined the school’s club swim team.
I wish my oldest did club swim at her university but she said it is too far to walk and the practices are too late.
@hgtvaddict Congratulations to your daughter.
Hooray, @hgtvaddict! B is definitely a liveable bump and you are so right to be proud of her effort!
Thanks @lkg4answers and @momzilla2D. We’re definitely considering the move, though it would be a terminal choice (in the sense of no more calc), not a choice that would allow a move to BC next year. His school doesn’t really play it that way.
@Darcy123, Thanks for the good luck wishes. And I hear you, and believe me, we all are on board with the wisdom of seeking help where it’s needed, learning to advocate for yourself early on, etc… (S2 is our third kid; the other two are several years out of college.) He regularly sets up appointments and sees the teacher during office hours, and goes to math clinic weekly. The issue with the tutor is not about resisting help, but about hoping he doesn’t have to add yet another Scheduled Thing to his life.
By the way, we are all settling very happily into break mode, APUSH and Calc hw notwithstanding.
It is beyond wonderful to see S2 relaxing with S1 and D, who have joined us for the next couple of days. Very much hoping all of you and your families are having fun too!
@HarrietMWelsch, we’ve been in similar situation, But we’re lucky in that pre-Calc teacher was the one who recommended kids get a tutor from the list he gave out, that is, people he endorse, since he won’t be able to help everyone after school. Since D idolized that teacher, she agreed to give it a try, and it worked out beautifully - she meets him Sunday morning in the gym cafe after her swim (so she’s awake, not tired from the day, etc), it doesn’t interfere with her schedule, and gives her a great boost. I used to think the main benefit was her self-confidence, but I think he must have played a role in unexpectedly high (for me) PSAT and ACT math scores. And yes, going AB instead of BC even though pre-Calc teacher recommended D for BC, definitely helped and kept the year manageable.
Btw, does anyone have any ideas for small presents teenagers might enjoy? At our house, NewYear’s is the main winter holiday, and we got large presents prepared already, but today I saw some small inexpensive things I know DS would love (of course, don’t want to give extra presents for S and not D), and wonder if there is anything of the same caliber our girl might enjoy so we could do stocking stuffings for them as well. Thanks in advance!
Thanks, @typiCAmom!
Have you looked at the stocking stuffers thread over in the Cafe? There are some very fun ideas there.
@HarrietMWelsch where is the Cafe? I really don’t know how college confidential works yet!
@HarrietMWelsch, thanks, I will check it out!
@typiCAmom
Just bought some stocking stuffers for my 2 D’s today. Self-care/indulgent stuff…hand lotion, fuzzy socks, Wet hair brushes, face masks, isotoner gloves. D20 specifically said she doesn’t want things she won’t use, so I tried to be practical.
@HarrietMWelsch
Going to check out that Parent Cafe now. Thanks!
I’ve been lurking for a while now and decided tonight to check in. DD20 will be my second time through this process. My DS18 is now a freshman at the University of Louisville majoring in biology and neuroscience. He is aiming for med school.
DD20 is thinking history and/or Spanish and that she would like to teach one or the other at the HS level. She is taking a challenging course load this year with 3 APs. So proud of how motivated she is and the way she is succeeding!
I feel like I learned a lot through the process with DS. Looking forward to following all of your journeys over the next couple of years. Good luck to all!
@LOUKYDAD Welcome!
Merry Christmas to all! Enjoy time with your family as friends. By this time next year some will have made their choice (ED acceptance), some will have some known options (Rolling and/or EA acceptances), and visions of college bills will be running through all of our heads.
@LOUKYDAD Welcome. Totally get the pride of kids striving and working towards their goals.
Thank you @Cheeringsection. Merry Christmas to all of you as well. We celebrate with extended family on Christmas Eve so tomorrow will be total chill with leftovers (#kitchenclosed) in our fam jams. Hopefully we’ll have family movie time if they can get the controllers out of their hands for a couple of hours. :))
I’m hopeful some work will happen over the break too. We shall see.
@ebh87, you’ve probably already found it, but just in case, when you open Parents Forum, the two choices at the very top are Class of 20XX Community and Parent Cafe. Have fun!
@Cheeringsection, thanks! Merry Christmas to you, and to everybody who celebrates! And happy holidays/break to all.
I’ve been running net price calculators and trying to finalize the list of schools to see this spring. I wish Santa had brought us a bigger college fund for Christmas! The numbers get big quick Ouch!!
@Cheeringsection Heck yeah. It’s harder than it was even 2 years ago.
