Our school starts after labor day. D17 had a lot of AP classes Junior and Senior year. There was barely anything going on in AP classes after the tests and D was enjoying that full month of nothing S20âs school has very rigid schedule, kids wonât be able to take many APs till senior year. He only had one AP (Calc BC) done sophomore year. The teacher let them self-start on MultiVal after the AP test. We will see what happens after May this year. He only has Physics C and Bio this year.
@socaldad2002 bow ties are cool. Maybe theyâre just Whovians. Ha!
Did anyone elseâs child receive their ACT scores in the mail today from the April 2 School/State test date? My d20 received hers. It is not linked to her online ACT account though. On a happy note, D20 got her target score. On a not so happy note she is going to have to take it one more time because the State test was without the essay and at least one of her schools requires the ACT essay
@janiemiranda thatâs tough about the essay. My D20 decided at the last minute not to do the SAT essay and I was against her decision but let her do it. Iâm worried that weâre going to regret that.
@janiemiranda how set is she on the school? My D19 took the ACT one more time when she thought she was done, just for a single school that required it. She ended up not even applying there and the scores for the extra test date with essay (and that test was a logistical nightmare for us- long story) never were sent anywhere.
@milgymfam It is one of the schools that give really great NMF scholarships so she wants to make sure she covers all her bases in case she makes NMF.
@janiemiranda - S20 took April 2 ACT too; no mail. Will those scores ever show in his ACT account?
Iâm pretty sure he will be taking it yet again cuz he CAN NOT FINISH english section. again. Wish he had timing accommodations. He did have an IEP till age 12; but i think itâd be very transparent why we wanted to reinstate that now.
S20 had a 14.5 hr day away from home today. Heâs tired. He said the saving grace to it all is that he has a study hall . That study hall really helps him on EC busy days. Iâm keeping that in the back of my mind for 8th grader.
Weâve visited NCSU, UPenn, Villanova, UVA, Georgetown, UNC, Duke, UGA, and Tennessee. We are now done with college tours and 7 of these remain on the list!
We are done with visits as well. There are currently 16 on sonâs list - need to do some paring down.
We have 2 more schools to visit.
So far she has 5 schools on the list. There is a thought to add one or max two Hail Mary schools but I am not sure if thatâs wise. So if you count everything there are about 9 schools in consideration. One of those schools has EA and there is also the thought to only apply EA to that one school and if she is accepted to call it a day!
So she has the tech school, the alternative LAC, the respectable university, the elite with a hook, the flagship, the reachy âstressed upâ LAC, the âdown townâ university and perhaps the 2 impossible, Hail Mary category LACs.
See how things shake up during the summer.
@bgbg4us I think the scores are supposed to show up online eventually. I bet you will get your S20s in the mail today or tomorrow.
DS took the school ACT in March. we received his score via mail but they are not posted online yet
Our ACT score was online before it came in the mail, by about a week.
I love all the tour updates.
@chb088 I hope you didnât tour all those in one week! I am doubtful my son could handle more than two back to back!
@socaldad2002 great information. UNC was my DD15âs first choice until she had two bad tours, they need to work on that, I believe they donât feel they need to sell it so they fall short.
Which NMF school requires the writing, I thought if you werenât looking at UCs, no one else really required it. None of the ones currently on my daughters list require it, but Iâd hate to add a school and find out she needs to the writing!
Talking about standard tests, we have a potential issue. S20 is zooming in on CS and CMU is no doubt one of the most desired. It turns out CMU requests standard tests to be from Junior/Senior year. I donât really understand why but it is their requirement. DS is one and done June last year. Even though it is end of sophomore year, it is still sophomore year. He said there were seniors who got into CMU with sophomore test dates. We donât know how risky it is to use this score or if he has no choice but to take again? If he takes it again, CMU would understand why, but how about other schools?
@whataboutcollege
If your son were from our HS, he would have finished his sophomore year by June 2018, so I would call CMU AO and ask about this? I would hope they would not be bothered by this minor issue? (Wouldnât it be even better to have a great score that young?)
@Darcy123 I was mistaken. D20 contacted the school to clarify. I had thought UT Dallas needed it but apparently the essay they needed was another online essay not associated with the SAT/ACT.
@whataboutcollege Only six schools currently require to see all tests. So unless he is also applying to those other 5 schools he can only send the one score. And I absolutely do not believe no matter what people say and try to rationalize that colleges care about how many times you took the test unless there is some red flag or some other reason to raise a question. I just can NOT imagine a college saying: We love this student but lets discuss in detail the fact that they took the SAT twice. I just donât see it.
I would also think worth it to send an email to your regional CMU adcom with the question if your son should retest or not.
Iâm so behind the curve of this group- Iâm just happy we have a workable list! My D20 has not tested at all yet, hasnât toured a single school, and only recently started happily discussing various colleges. She has started working on a version of a common app essay- Iâve assigned it as facet of English class. She isnât a fan of writing so I figure best to start working on it as early as possible. My D19 wrote all her essays and submitted her applications in August last year, and it made senior year so much more pleasant than her friends who were stressing over apps and essays until January- some are still writing scholarship apps now.
@makemesmart We brought this issue to his school counselor and she reached out to CMU admission and they said they request Junior/Senior test results. There seems to be a lot of real life exceptions to the rule but it also seems like they are holding it true on paper ( official responses ). S doesnât have hooks to boost his chance. If they accept the score but consider it as a weakness, he probably would lose any chance of getting in. To add on that, his Math 2 test is from august 2017 :(. DH said to just forget about CMU since it is a long long shot anyway.
edit:
@am9799 You have a good point! I had started socializing the idea to S20 about taking test again. Do you have the 6 schools that require all test dates?
