Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Quick question: If one is updating a college as to a new honor, would one notify the regional rep or main admissions?

@Octagon S20 has been updating his regional AO at each school. He built the relationship for reasons such as this. Best of luck.

@onthewestfence - thanks for the info; what type of info is worth updating? (I know its open for interpretation but wondering if its only for big ticket items like winning an award or is it worth sending an update for things without awards - just wondering if/when AOā€™s start to look at them as pestering instead of showing interest).

@hs2020dad One email to your AO could probably cover many situations, even if the item/award is different. You would get the same instructions, so certainly donā€™t email the AO constantly. In general, at this point, I donā€™t think the AO is going to have much influence. But the award might. The AO is getting so many emails they probably forget who has been emailing them anyway.

Anyone else feel like this weekend is going to be a tense one for those applying to the public Ivies? UVA releases EA on Friday night and UM is rumored to be releasing a wave of acceptances sometime this weekend.

Is this the first wave for Michigan since December?
Yes, lots of the same kids probably waiting on UVA and MI. My D got into UNC last week so while sheā€™s still nervous for UVA, itā€™s not as bad. She got into honors for UNC and invited to a scholarship interview so Iā€™m not sure if UVA will be in the running. Interesting how the order of announcements makes such a big difference, as someone else was mentioning.
Good luck to everyone!!

Congrats, @Musicmom2015 Yes, Iā€™m referring to the Michigan applicants who were deferred in December (which definitely includes my kid). D also is a little less nervous bc she got into UTAustin last week, which was a complete surprise. She had started to relax but as soon as she heard that UVA and UM would be releasing decisions this weekend, the relaxed feeling was gone. I feel for these kids - they have to be ā€œonā€ for so much longer than is humanly possible.

DD accepted to Florida State with an out of state tuition waiver scholarship. This definitely keeps them as a high choice for her. Very exciting!

Same here with my S, @voyagermom. And FSUā€™s resident tuition is so low! Even with travel expenses, this would be less expensive than our state flagship. S will give Tallahassee another visit, and see how other merit offers shake out. FSU is looking pretty good right now, though.

FSU in-state tuition is $6500 and their OOS tuition without any scholarships is $21,500. A real bargain for sure and congratulations to all of you who got accepted and got that waiver.

Another FSU mom whose D20 has an OOS wavier. Any idea on housing costs?

Congrats on all the Florida State acceptances!

D also got accepted yesterday. We live in FL, so it feels good to have that inexpensive option, and one that she is also enthusiastic about. I think we may take another trip up there during her Spring Break to one of the accepted student visit days.

@MBNC1755 Here are the housing costs: https://housing.fsu.edu/future-residents/finances/rental-rates
Most of the dorms are suite style.

D20 is done. She finally received her acceptance to the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa. That was her #1, and of course, it had to be her last acceptance. She was 8/8 in direct admit nursing programs. She is so relieved and is happy to be a Hawkeye! Big sports, highly-regarded nursing program, childrenā€™s hospital on campus, and one of the best college towns in the country.

Congrats @bigmacbeth !

Coincidence. DS received another scholarship to University of Iowa yesterday.

Congrats to your daughter @bigmacbeth!

Such a lot of good news! Congratulations all around.

@cshell D20 wants a scholarship! No fair! Isnā€™t that the one he applied to mistakenly?

Yep. LOL Iowa is Iowa right?

He received a $7600 ā€œNational Scholars Awardā€ with his acceptance, and yesterday was a 3K ā€œMinnesota Access Scholarshipā€. Still way out of our price range, but yeahā€¦he applied there by accident anyhow. Itā€™s a great school, but not one of his top choices for engineering.

@cshell Thatā€™s nice of them to have a Minnesota scholarship. Curious, as I have not seen that one beforeā€¦but Iowa is not that transparent with the way they award scholarships. It wasnā€™t the UI ā€˜Academic Successā€™ scholarship, was it?

I canā€™t find it listed anywhere on their website, but this is what it says in the financial aid award offer in MyUI

Minnesota Access Award

National Scholars Award

Iā€™ll check the actual letter when I get home to see if it says anything different.
