^^ Ah, there was already a thread underway, see here:
Such a shame that some kids wonāt get an opportunity to tour before making a decision!
You can still visit, just not the large days with a bunch of students.
Right @VickiSoCal - and in fact some may do sort of mini-admitted students days in stead so that at least fewer people will be gathering all at once. At least this is true for LMU. When they sent out their notice they were canceling the admitted studentsā day, they also said:
āWe understand how important a campus visit can be in finalizing your college decision, and we will offer multiple campus visit opportunities for admitted students throughout April. These will feature campus and residence hall tours, student panels, opportunities to see campus facilities first hand and to hear from faculty and staff. A full schedule of these events will be shared with you next week.ā
@CAtransplant Barging in from class of 2021ā¦
Nice that LMU will still host students on campus even if itās not official admitted student days. Seems like the schools Iāve seen cancel admitted student days are also cancelling tours. For our 2021 kids, many of us on that thread are planning spring break campus visits and Iām wondering if we would still go on ours even if all tours were cancelled. If I had a 2020, I think I would still go to campus and take a self tour, talk to students, hang in the cafeteria, do everything I could to help our kid decide. Hope it doesnāt come to that for any of you with 2020s but itās better than nothing.
Iām just fortunate that D20 is done with ED acceptance and already had her new students orientation.
One problem I can see at many college campuses is overcrowding of dorms, classes etc in the fall due to kids not studying abroad in the fall due to travel restrictions overseas.
@homerdog ya I think itās nice LMU will still do the smaller sort of mini-admitted student days is how it sounds to me. Luckily, we already did a tour and even a tour of the film school which is what she applied and was admitted to. But still, it was last year and a re-visit to the top couple choices if possible would be nice. Good luck with your touring plans!
@socaldad2002 Wake Forest put off doing its housing lottery just because of that. They are waiting to see if they need to add kids who will now not be gone. I donāt know how study abroad works but I think itās right about now that kids are finding out their plans. I wonder if there are any places that we know might be safe in the fall and some kids could make changes. Who knows. So much will be thrown off by the virus.
I hope most schools keep their admitted student days. Makes me wonder how these classes will look different. Like which kids will still accept? Guessing a larger percentage of kids will matriculate who have already seen campus. So far, most of the schools that have cancelled are elite schools and most likely are not worried about filling their class!
@ctcape. You are right about New England and flagships. Our area is so compressed and close by to each other with so many schools.
Itās tough to even imagine our whole region is smaller than Texas.
In NE getting out of the bubble is a real thing.
I was thinking of the large mid west and southern states and out west.
My guess is more than 95 percent of New England kids donāt leave our region for college and the vast majority donāt move far away at all.
Itās still pretty rare to hear someoneās child has moved to California or elsewhere.
@privatebanker I hear you. New England is a bubble, and my area (central CT) is fairly parochial compared to my own upbringing in Boston. I went to CU Boulder, and we lived in NYC until our kids were toddlers, so weāre all for them trying something that gives them a new perspective, even if thatās only Amherst or Newportā¦ That said, Iām selfishly and simultaneously hoping DS20 will love and hate Charleston, lol. Lots of inner conflict. And weāre both teachers, so thereās budget. And DS22ā¦
After a long talk today, he seems to be leaning towards UMass Amherst. Canāt complain. Back in the late 80ās it was my safety. Life is funny.
Itās my alma mater. Itās really a great place and has afforded me many opportunities and a fantastic career.
Itās 100 times better now and so competitive.
I can see how itās a lot more common in the eastern states. I mean UMAss, URI and UConn are all pretty close together even if theyāre in different states. Weāre looking at in-state options that are 120-350 miles away.
I absolutely love it there. It makes me want to go back to school!
@cshell2 same here, its possible to go to a school 4 hours away and still be in state.
Most kids stay in state here. Quite a few go to the community college and commute. My city has quite a few colleges as well, so odds that you will go to college with many of your HS class are low.
Some go to neighboring states and few go farther than that.
My S wanted to stay in state and not look at OOS schools but I gave him info on some OOS and he became more open minded. However, he will be staying in-state since he got in to his #1 school.
@mountainmomof3 - just curious, has your S20 rethought FSU since he did not get into FSUās Honors College? We had the same issue as you with the portal saying yes and the email saying no. D20 is reconsidering University of Arizona over FSU because she did get into UAās Honors College. Curious what your thoughts on the two schools are.
@Searching2020 - sent you a message.
After another campus visit yesterday DS announced he was ready to commit to Minnesota. Iām not sure how I feel about that decision yet. I definitely donāt have the feeling of relief I was hoping to have. Probably because even though he claims heās given this a lot of thought, Iām not convinced he has. It seemed more like a āIām tired of everyone asking me where Iām going and this is the cheaper optionā. Which, I guess is a decent enough reason. Iām just worried heāll be lost there.
We need to request our deposit back from the school he committed to back in October (itās 90% refundable), but I feel like dragging my feet on that another week or two.
@cshell2 I donāt know about you, but I am experiencing NO sense of relief with my S20ās decision. It feels bittersweet, same as when my older kids committed. I think itās just because itās closing a door on an alternate future for them. With D16, I didnāt question her choice at all but I did start to open my eyes to all of the things in the list of the āconsā we had talked about with her chosen college.
@mom2jgd - Bittersweet is a good word for how it feels. Weāve been so into several schools for the past 6 months and imagining life there that itās kind of hard to just cut them loose now and move on. There really was no one āperfectā choice. They all had different pros and cons, and it was a hard decision for him!
I told DS last night that I wish I had another kid so I could send him to the other school. Heās like, āMom, you do have another kidā¦ā
Well yeah, but heās 9. Thatās a long wait.
Definitely bittersweet. DD20 has accepted enrollment and scholarship so that she can get housing assigned in her preferred location. I am in total support of the school she chose but without full responses from other schools, (Admission from 1 and scholarships from others) I am not yet feeling truly done. We will not be declining other admissions until all details have been received.
