Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Congrats to her! Love hearing good news right now.

Congrats as well. My S20 is so shocked he got into Vandy just now!

Awesome!

Hi! Just saw helpful
Merit appeal and am wondering: Has anyone successfully appealed an initial need-based financial aid offer? Any tips? Like many middle class families, our EFC is not representative of what we have saved or can afford.

DS20 waitlisted at NEU. So sad. He has some great options, though, so we will accept the waitlist and get excited about birds in hand.

Oh well is a no from Duke for D20ā€¦

Waitlisted at Dartmouth. Already turned it down. Exceedingly happy to have her going to Tulane as both a Stamps Scholar and an Altman Scholar. Glad this is all done.

Accepted: Brown, University of Chicago, Boston U, Barnard, Howard, USF Honors College, U of O Honors College, American U FDDS and waitlisted Vanderbilt and declined at Harvard and Princeton.

Full ride: American University
Full Tuition: Howard, USF and University of Chicago
Full Tuition and Room: U of O
Financial Aid: Barnard and Brown

Going to American University

DS20 waitlisted at Emory. Declined the spot. Maybe will try again for grad school.

D waitlisted at Dartmouth. Now her choice comes down to Davidson (net cost almost $50k w/aid) and UVA ($33k instate). Also in at Colby ($60k+) but cost, distance and the fact she hasnā€™t visited make it a likely no. She is in severe like (just short of absolute love) w/Davidson and likes UVA where several friends will be attending. She is blessed to have the choice between two wonderful but very different institutions and says she could be happy at either. We think Davidson might be a better fit for her all things being equal but the $65k difference over 4 years with one other sib in college and the economic uncertainty ahead of us has to be part of the family decision. She has a month to decide unless deadlines get extended to June 1.

DS20 got into his first choice school in RD today.
After a series of waitlists (6) - this is a welcome relief. couple more admits today.
Seems like the search is coming to a near endā€¦if only we could have done those tours earlier. Now the decision is based on virtual tours. Happy that this process is almost overā€¦and anxious about this senior class and the incredible amount of uncertainty they are navigating.

Great news, do you mind sharing the college? I think I read your son is majoring in computer science?

Thanks. He got in Cornell, Berkeley and Tufts (and waitlisted in a bunch). Yes he is planning to major in CS and Math. Berkeley is the top choice for him - we encouraged him earlier to go for any he liked but now a little hesitant (current turmoil put a big dent in our overall financial affordability). He does have couple very affordable options. For now, not thinking about the final choice and letting him have some time to feel happy about the results.

This whole process was exhausting - he was waitlisted in 7 (a significant % of total apps) and making him feel down. Now we breathe easy - we have to put our heads/hearts/purse together to make a decision.

DD accepted at UMich, Smith, Oberlin, UW - Seattle, and MI State (honors college); waitlisted at Wellesley, Colby, Wesleyan & Barnard.

Sheā€™s now trying to decide between UMich (Residential College) & Smith. Hard decision!! They both have a lot of positives & but they are also both very different options. She wants to major in Evolutionary Biology and then go on to grad school.

So as of last night, all decsions are in. D20 cast a wide net and got a few nice acceptances: She has narrowed her choices down to four schools: Cornell, Wellesley, Hamilton, and Vassar.

It looks like the costs will pretty similar at all four. Any feedback on any of these schools for a Biology major (pre-med or pre-PA track) is welcomed. She has her current favorite (Cornell), and I have mine (Wellesley and Hamilton).

She has only visited Hamilton and Vassar. The other two we figured we would visit if she got in. Am hoping that deadlines get extended until 6/1 so that we may be able to visit in May, but am not counting on that at this point. So she has been doing research online via YouTube and connecting with some other prospective students on Facebook and Instagram to get a feel for the schoolsā€™ vibes and meet some of her potential classmates.

The college admissions season began on a low note with an ED rejection to Brown, but has ended on a positive note.

Best of luck to all of our kids as make these desisions. May they all end up happy and successful in their future endeavors!

@AlwaysLearn - I vote for Cornell, second choice Wellesley. Since I donā€™t know you or DD at all, take that with a grain of salt. Itā€™s based on friends, students, and a particular friend who did her undergrad in bio at one of those and is now a prof at the other.

@AlwaysLearn - We have no financial aid offer from Vassar. Do you have something from them or are you just assuming based on your EFC and no merit being given there?

My S20 was accepted to Princeton. We are all thrilled about it. His teacher (who had taught there for many years) tried to steer him away from it, saying all the students were really stressed out. If anyone has any feedback on the atmosphere and workload, that is very much appreciated. We should pool our resources on college info. My nephew went to Cornell and was able to do an independent study when no specific course within his interest was available.

@AlwaysLearn: Your daughter earned admission to two of the colleges from this Forbes article:

Not bad . . .

@SpikeyMike13 Oops, I should have clarified: We donā€™t have official financial aid offers from Vassar (or Cornell) yet. Am just basing it on our EFC and the NPCā€™s. (No merit at any of them.)
