Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

D21 got her ACT score back from her 9/12 exam. The score remained the same as her first test taken last December, but two of the section scores went up, and two went down.

Superscored, she gained one point.

So if you are using scores from two dates, are you then required to send both score reports to colleges? Or does ACT do the super scoring and reporting for you? I’m unclear how it all works.

It could be the one reason as you mentioned, or it could be that those test centers are closed and students knew about it and cancelled or switched their registration to a future date? Im just guessing.

As far as I know, no test centers have been closed for the November test. And November is the last SAT date where you can get a score prior to the UC/CSU app deadline of 11/30.

Maybe families have decided to get on the “ED train” (w/o test score) that’s leaving the station shortly.

@sushiritto I hope so too  anyway, thanks for the info, I also switched my S21’s Nov SAT to an SAT subject test now, as his school is providing an exam on Oct 27th. You are right, I could see many centers showing seat available now on CB. Fingers crossed for everything to fall in place!

I think the ACT sends all scores to the college. The only difference this year is that they themselves will provide a superscore.

First check which schools on your D’s list accept ACT superscores, as not all do.

Many schools do accept self-reported scores, so look at that because it will save you money, by not having to pay to send official scores. On the common app, your D will report her highest score on each section, and the school will calculate a superscore (again if they superscore).

For schools that require official scores, you will have to pay to send scores to them…it does look like ACT provides a superscore in that case. https://www.act.org/content/act/en/new-act-options/superscoring.html

@sushiritto maybe it had to do also with the UC court decision?

^I haven’t looked deeply at this, but my understanding is that the trial court’s injunction against UC has been temporarily stayed by the appellate court.

On another note, how’s this for some sort of bait and switch. I was looking at the Rice supplementals in the Common App. There are two initially, why major and why Rice. If you start typing in the first box. a third question shows up. Maybe they figure the applicant has come this far, let’s push them one further? Weird.

Are you in CA? If not, then there’s something “bigger” going on here.

Maybe all those that actually got to take the September and/or October SAT test are satisfied with their scores and released their November test seats.

We’re in CA, and D had decided to go test optional since the closest test we had found was about 100 miles away in November, and she’s NMSF so we figure that she has shown that she can test well. Now her school has opened an October test onsite just for seniors. She can’t decide whether to take it. Part of me thinks take it and don’t send the scores unless they’re what she wants, and the other is that she should just be done with it and concentrate on essays. She hasn’t been studying.
Between a concussion and COVID, she’s had 7 ACT or SAT tests canceled this year.

What’s the UC court decision? I, too, am worried about the CA schools on D’s list. We would really need them to go back to school this spring to consider them unless she’s shut out of the rest of her list. I just cannot see her choosing them unless we can see them in person with students there.

Court said that UCs could not use SATs for admission or scholarships, which means a lot of students may not have the reason to take them. CSUs are following that as well. So, if you’re looking to go to a state school in CA, there’s no need this year because they will not look at them.

Ah that decision. I thought there was some decision in LA county that colleges could not have students back on campus. I need to investigate more about that.

I don’t know how long the temporary stay will last.

@sushiritto Yes, we are in CA (Bay Area to be precise :)) our S21’s HS is organizing an SAT just for seniors on Oct 27th.

So what’s up in the Bay Area when it comes to colleges? Do any have kids on campus right now? Any word on what might happen at those schools for spring? Really hoping SCU goes back in case we want to visit.

Does anyone have an opinion on using yield rate as a way to judge a school, especially one we don’t have a lot of experience with? Both LMU and SCU have an 18 percent yield rate. Lower than any of the other schools on D’s list. Thoughts?

To the best of my knowledge, I don’t believe there’s any undergraduate students on campuses here. If I’m wrong, then I’m sure someone will correct me.

I’m in the Palo Alto area a lot and it’s almost a ghost town. Not a Stanford student to be found.

My D will likely be applying to SCU too. It’s a really nice campus, great school, but I’m not a big fan of the area surrounding it. But you can say that about a lot of schools.

Fabulous. I’ll be calling on you if D gets in and it moves towards the top of the list! I’m feeling pretty pessimistic that there will be anyone on campus this spring. That’s got to hurt them when trying to woo kids to campus. No 2021 will see SCU with kids on campus or get into any buildings on campus for this whole school year? How can one choose it?

Thanks! I’m behind on the court case news.

S is also applying to SCU and thankfully we toured right before Covid. @sushiritto would you guess that a lot of Bay Area kids will be staying closer to home? Do you think more Bay Area students will be applying to SCU? Just curious. @homerdog I’m guessing the yield might have something to do with their stingy merit aid for many students. We are getting into the red zone down here possibly next week.
