I don’t have any special insight but that makes sense to me. From what I have seen with my kids and heard from others Science in particular can vary wildly from test to test. I think the most important section is probably English, so I would send the one with the highest English score. I think there probably isn’t harm in sending both scores either.
I just checked my email, and it said the same thing on the emails D21 got from the CB (she forwards that stuff to me so I can help her keep track). Both she and I have looked at the “where my score was sent” area on CB though, and it does not say that the scores she did not want sent anywhere were actually sent anywhere. It does say the ones she chose to send were sent. Again, hope I am being clear with my wording. So it sounds like your daughter did everything right, and I would assure her not to fret.
I would report/send both tests…many schools that don’t formally calculate a composite superscore do look at the highest scores from each section. If you are using the common app, that is what the applicant enters there as well (highest scores for each section).
Good luck.
@3SailAway I’m curious why you sent official scores since the school allows self-reporting. Are we thinking it’s better to send the scores directly from tha agency?
@2Devils Thanks about the Roberston info. A girl we know got it several yrs ago. It’s for kids who could get into Harvard/Yale etc… I’ve followed her progress and she’s on another full ride for a PhD/JD at Stanford. The Roberston was never in the cards for anyone in our family.
My daughter just got an email stating that UF moved their deadline to 11/16, so I suspect they’re a bit concerned about the numbers.
@nanosec - just saw that in our email inbox, too!
After another hour and a half with ACT customer service they were able to migrate D21’s data so scores can be sent! It seems like the issue was two accounts were created. One had a space between the last two letters of her last name and I guess that was causing some problems. I am just grateful I was able to send the scores.
Also note that the colleges did not select any Robertson scholars last year due to CV-19 and who knows if they will implement the program for the class of 2025?
Lastly, normally there are only 36 total recipients each year split among Duke and UNC-CH freshman so the odds of getting one of these scholarships is extremely remote.
Yes, the odds of getting the Robertson are very small. I do know a couple of impressive young people who have gotten it, though, so somebody has to be chosen.
Here is more information if it’s relevant for anybody. Application deadline is November 15 and they are holding informational webinars so while there’s no guarantee it will be awarded, the opportunity to apply is being extended.
Applicants choose either Duke or UNC as their home institution and are required to reside at the other campus for their second semester of sophomore year.
I just thought we were supposed to! That’s what we did with D19, and I didn’t know you could just self report. I also thought that if you enrolled, you had to send the official report anyway.
@JanieWalker , thank you so much for setting our minds at ease!
@3SailAway You do send an official report if you enroll (but you only enroll at one school).
And there are still some schools that don’t accept self-reported scores.
@3SailAway, there are some schools that want you to send official scores (not just self-reported) along with the application, but they will tell you in their application pages.
Thanks for the info, @evergreen5 and @JanieWalker . I’ll keep it in mind for the potential RD round. D21’s list is short, so it won’t be hard to figure out who prefers what.
@dadof4kids Thank you!
@Mwfan1921 I like that idea!
Are first-quarter grades required for all EA/ED applications? I don’t see anything saying they are required for the colleges on D21’s list. There’s nothing mentioning first quarter grades in the portals, either. I want to make sure those colleges get what they need, but I also don’t want D21 to write AOs and ask if doing so would annoy the AOs or make her look silly. Should we assume that if they don’t mention first quarter grades in the portal or on the admissions’ website, that they don’t want them?
@JanieWalker my understanding is that your HS registrar will automatically send updated transcripts to anywhere your student has applied. My D21 is applying ED but I doubt her grades will be reported for semester 1 before the ED decisions come out. I was told you can request quarter grades be sent and I plan to have her do this as she has straight ‘A’s including 2 difficult AP classes.
@whyboydanny That situation does not apply to us, as D21 is a homeschooler. I (Counselor) could send quarter grades, but the colleges (dual credit) and online providers she is using only issue semester-based transcripts. I could always send a consolidated homeschool transcript showing the grade she has to date in each of those classes, though I don’t want to do this if that is not actually required.
@JanieWalker From what I understand, first quarter grades for ED/EA seem to be the exception rather than the rule. I noticed that WashU’s website indicates that they require first quarter or some form of mid-semester progress, for example. If the college’s website doesn’t mention it, then it wouldn’t be a requirement, unless of course the admission office contacts you to make such a request, as they might do on a case-by-case basis.
To those looking at Duke and scholarships- sorry can’t find the original posts- I suggest you check out Washington and Lee. They have the Johnson scholarship program, competitive and need blind. Approximately 10% of incoming class will be awarded one and I believe it is full tuition room and board. Gorgeous school, very selective and excellent academics and recruiting. My D21, who did not see herself at Duke after our visit due to fit, loved this school. It is currently a contender for ED. ED due 11/1, Johnson due 12/1.
D21 has all her supplements and CA essay done. She plans to decide by Sunday and push send- I can’t wait for this part to be done! She has fallen in love with 2 ‘late add’ and recent visit schools. I have to say I see her dilemma as both she and I agree (shocking) that we can see her at both and both come closest to checking all her boxes. Problem is we did a Sewanee visit this week and all I can say is wow. D21 had never heard about it until about a month ago and neither had I. Had no expectations and it is not a school with a lot of discussion in CC or other sites. Kind of flies under the radar but IMO most beautiful campus I’ve ever seen but more importantly academic focus was excellent and have a unique environmental science program utilizing campus - all 13,000! Acres. Was impressed with how they were maintaining their COVID bubble but continuing to offer the students regular activities and in person classes. D21 loved the traditions like the honors gowns, the facilities, internships, grad school placement and the outdoor club. D21 could apply EA there and ED to W and L who have no EA- a bummer because she could potentially lose opportunity for this school but W and L gives a solid ED bump that she needs. D21 has 5 other schools on her list for EA and RD but only got ‘that feeling of this is it’ at these 2 schools. Argh! Wish we would have been able to do these visits in Spring/Summer and had more time to consider the options. Damn COVID.
Last year I trusted that colleges accurately state what they wanted. My D20 applied to quite a few EA/rolling schools in addition to her ED. I think her ED was the ONLY school that wanted quarter grades. Same with official/self reported test scores. If they say self reported is okay, that’s what we sent and she had zero issues. None of the schools on my S21’s EA list ask for quarter grades and we won’t be sending them.
