@mom22boys, I don’t know what the engineering open house was like, but I imagine it was similar but obviously geared toward the engineering kids. I don’t think you need to go to another open house. My D just wanted another look before deciding. Has your son decided?
We are a no go. “too rich for FA, too poor for full cost of ND” Bittersweet.
It really is amazing how the sticker price of schools can vary. With $0 from the ND Financial Aid office, our family decided the annual $62K was just too much. Frankly, we would feel better about assisting other hard working kids with their tuition and put D through school elsewhere than to spend $ 248K on just one. My D agrees with that charitable decision and for that, we are so proud of her.
I really do not know how upper middle class families can pay that amount, put multiple kids through school, not bury their kids in debt and not drain their 401Ks. We are very fortunate that she does have 75% scholarships at other great schools.
It will make our family tailgates interesting this year. Was hoping it was with our D as a Domer. Dad and 2 brothers are alumni so they are still in shock.
My son was accepted EA to ND and many other excellent Universities! He was torn at the end between 3 but finally committed last night to NOTRE DAME!!! He spent 2 weeks there as a summer scholar and had an awesome experience! He was accepted at more prestigious universities and was offered full rides at 2 diff colleges! He felt immediately “at home” on the ND campus and loved Jordan Hall (the science bldg.) He also was inspired by the 2 professors he had! We are getting zero aid but he is an only child so we are going to foot the bill! I think the benefits he will receive down the road as a ND grad will be well worth the $!
He is also in the Glynn honors program which seems like an fabulous program with many perks! Congrats to all! Cant wait to visit and attend a football game!!! GO IRISH!
@suzy100 My son has not decided yet. Not sure what’s going to be the deciding factor. Has it narrowed down to ND and one other.
@KCsMom71, I am sorry to read your post. I totally understand and support that decision and would have been in the same boat without financial aid. It sounds like your D is a wonderful, mature young lady and I’m so glad she has other great offers. I hope she has a fantastic experience!
@pasoccermom, good for your son! I hope he has a fantastic experience as well!
@Mom22boys, I hope for your sake he decides soon, no matter where he chooses. The waiting is hard!
My daughter is deciding between Notre Dame and UVA. She likes them both equally with pros and cons of each. I don’t want to influence her decision as it has to be her own, but I’m at a loss at how to help her come to a decision. She does realize this is a good problem to have but it’s getting down to the wire. UVA was always her top choice until she toured ND last week. I guess her biggest concerns about ND are climate, social life and strictness of dorms, in comparison to UVA. Any last minute advice from a former or current student?
Son was also accepted into Glynn honors program. Trying to decide between ND and WUSTL,was at ND last weekend, going for an overnight to WUSTL this week. Any insights(aside from the differences in athletic programs)would be welcomed. Financially equal for us. Pros/cons of either? Son feeling a bit stressed!
@BJAG625 one of my sons final 3 was UVA! He had such a hard time choosing too! It was down to UVA,ND and Northwestern! We toured each school twice ! He did not want to go to a " cold" school! And he also had the same concerns as your daughter re strictness etc…So I thought UVA would win out! But after taking climate out of the equation Notre Dame won out ! He spent 2 weeks there this past summer in their summer scholars program and absolutely loved it! He loved the vibe on campus and felt “at home”! We also took him out to a home football game and that was awesome! In the end I think he realized a degree from ND would really help him down the line and you can’t beat their alumni network! Dormers are everywhere and love to hire Domers! Good luck to your daughter! Both excellent schools! An awesome problem to have! I hope she picks ND though!
@kross1inwi, I would start a new post either with the title, “ND vs. WUSTL” or one specifically asking about Glynn. I I think you will get more responses that way. My D did not apply for it (not a science kid) but that looks like an incredible opportunity.
@BJAG625, you may want to do the same with an ND vs. UVA thread.
After visiting both again, son chose ND, felt it was a better fit for him. Decision made, hallelujah!! He’s happy, so are we :o)
With only days left my daughter is still trying to decide between ND and UVA!
Tomorrow is decision day! Does anyone know what time decisions are due? By midnight?
Have all of your kids committed to a college?
Son 2 will join Son 1 at ND. Thank you Lord.
Congratulations @NDgradNDdad !!! Did he commit on May 1st? We are now interested to see the yield rate, and are praying that they go to the waitlist! My son is on the WL and passionate about the chance to attend.
I’m heading to ND on Friday to move our now Junior daughter out of her dorm (despite my screen name–I’m no longer Mom of a New ND). I feel for all of the parents with students on the waitlist and so I had to login to comment. It was a long haul for us as our daughter was deferred EA and then waitlisted. She heard via phone call from her admissions rep that she was admitted on May 8th (2012). She was in the first “round” of waitlist admits so it took about a week for her to hear. What a great day that was! This weekend I’ll say a prayer and light a candle at the grotto for all of the waitlisted applicants AND their parents.
@MomofNewND Thank you for posting! Your prayers are greatly appreciated!! I’ll keep you posted!
@skipper26 my son committed a few weeks ago. Good luck to your family.
