Parents, please help me with my college plan!

Hi, parents! I just got into a fantastic university with a full scholarship! I am very excited and I am now planning my college life. I want to make the most out of every opportunity!

I am an international student who grew up in a grassroots family. I want to pursue a career in government in the future, but I lack the guidance. Though I will have an advisor in college, I want to first get some advice from the intelligent parents on CC.

Please give me some suggestions, parents! Like what kind of class I should take in my freshmen year, what activities I should get more involved and what books I should read before going to college.

Thank you!!!!!

I think we'd need to know a bit more information in which to offer advice. Where you are from, and where you will be attending. Congrats on the full scholarship.

Congratulations!
In addition to giving us the info that momray requested, also take the time to connect with some students at the college where you plan to go. The admissions office can help you connect. Also look at the college's web site and see if you can get e-mails for students in organizations that are of interest to you. For instance, there probably is an international students association and a student government association. E-mail those students and ask your questions. They'll probably be very helpful. Also check Myspace for students who attend that college, and post on their blogs to request info.

The college's web site also will list the course requirements for each major. Check that out, too.

Don't forget about your own parents in this process...they may not know alot about college life, but they helped you get to this point so they must have done something right. You may find yourself missing them more than you might think, so take the next few months to spend some quality time with Mom and Dad before you go, and share all your wonderful college experiences with them by email or phone as often as you can. Congratulations.

Thank you so much for the great advice, parents! Through reading your posts, I kind of have an idea of what my next step will be. I will check out the course requirements and connect more with current students, and probably professors.

I am very grateful to have a family like mine. I would not get this far without them. I will definitely miss them when I leave for college. Thank you for reminding me, caruth!
