Parents pressuring you to go to public colleges?

I live in New York, and my parents are pressuring me to attend a SUNY.

Im so jealous of other states public colleges, university of Texas at Austin, Georgia Tech, University of Washington at Seattle, Penn State, are just a few of the amazing public schools. Unfortunately there are no good SUNY schools, Im going to have to settle for a mediocre education, get a mediocre job with a microscopic salary, and live in cardboard box the rest of my life.

My uncle wants me to go to the local community college.
"It's ranked number one in the northwest for nursing!"
Ya, like I'm completely going to go into medicine.
That's totally me.
:(

(Oh my Uncle is like a father to me, just to clarify why this has a big impact.)

My parents want me to go to a UC (U of California), but they're willing to let me attend a private/OOS university if I get a decent financial aid package. But in my case, I wouldn't phrase it as pressure. It's just their preference. I'd be happy to go to a UC, but I'm also interested in looking at other options. :]

You're overreacting. Education is what you make of it, not where it's done.

Psh, who am I kidding. You're screwed, buddy.

Actually, I too am jealous of the other amazing state flagship colleges. Like UVA and UMich. I mean, Rutgers is okay, but it's no top 50 (or maybe it is, I didn't check).

plue00, that’s the point, at most other states there are amazing public schools. University of Washington is 5th in the nation for comp. sci! No SUNY school can match that. It's annoying that I have to shell out over $160,000 to get a decent education, when in other states residents get amazing educations at under $20,000 a year.

Stony Brook is ranked 96th in the nation. Let’s compare to other states. I don’t remember the exact number, but I think UW, UT are ranked in the 30s. Only 60% of the students graduate at Stony Brook, and the tripling situation is high. A third of the freshmen live in triples… And there are websites dedicated to bashing it Cough stonybrooksucks DOT com. Cough

About the job issue, I will use University of Washington as an example. Microsoft donates to their comp. sci department. Microsoft recruits graduates at UW. At other colleges graduates are swarmed with amazing job offers. No top companies recruit at SUNY schools.

stentorian you have some of the best public schools in America! UCLA? Berkeley? I have no good options....

Sometimes, I have to admit the beauty of living in California considering the fact that our flagship is Cal and UCLA is a close second. My parents don't really care whether I go private or public, so it's nice. However, I do feel bad for those of you guys who live in states with a not-so-strong public university system.

We only have three schools in the top 100.

SUNY Binghamton
SUNY ESF
Suny Stony Brook

Binghamton sucks for anything in technology.
ESF doesn't even have a comp sci program.
Stony Brook has an alright program I suppose. But the issue is no top companies recruit there....

Don't be complaining because you think that the SUNY system sucks compared to UT and Udub. There are people who would give all they had to go to Stony Brook in Binghamton.

I live in California too, but i don't want to go to any public schools. I'm sick of being in the system and feeling like just a number. I don't want to be accepted because of my GPA or test scores, but for the kind of person I am.

I live in GA and Georgia Tech is good but not my type... always wanted to go up north- used to live in canada. but yea my parents are like stay in the freakin state and im trying to get out of it

Top companies recruiting at GIT - Check
Cheap tuition for residents - Check
No debt at graduation - Check
High Starting Salaries - Check
High Rankings - Check

If you graduate from Georgia Tech with a strong GPA your life is set.

Even if I graduate from Stony Brook with a 4.0, led 20 clubs, and participated in 5 research projects I don't think that would be enough to get a decent job.
