Parents resent the though of me applying to Alabama - how to change their mind?

Not really true, particularly if the OP is from northern VA. UVA is required to accept students from across the state so some high scoring students in northern VA (TJ students among others) get denied.

Northern VA is suburbs of DC? That makes sense. I think that’s true of most states that try for county diversity since the legislature pays the bills. Last time I heard though UVa derives not nearly as much of its revenue from state appropriations as other state schools…but I haven’t checked recently. I wonder if that subtly shapes policy changes in admissions.

“UVa, like any flagship, is a safety when you are instate and at the 75th percentile of selectivity for the student body…”

I can’t believe UVA would be a safety for almost anyone…

Actually I’m from southern VA, so I don’t know if that makes it any more of a safety…

For an in-state student, with a 4.0, 34 ACT, from a less competitive area? Yeah, it probably would be. It’s harder to get in out-of-state, but that’s different.

^^^I said almost anyone.

Well, it’s not like the OP is the top applicant in the world. I’m just saying, if it’s a state’s flagship, there are likely a decent amount of people who can use it as a safety. The OP looks to be one, though applying to other safeties can’t hurt.

About NMF…

99% chance I won’t be, VA is a pretty competitive state for that, like among top 10 states if I’m not mistaken. I will be a commended student for sure though, I already got a letter about that.

Not sure what you mean by saying that VA is a competitive state. It’s not like many have the needed scores, but then aren’t chosen.

Making NMSF is based on your PSAT alone. What was it???

And, then, going from NMSF to NMF is pretty easy as long as you do the paperwork correctly, turn it in on time, have good grades, no suspensions at school, and you send your SAT scores to NMCorp #0085

As I said in the message mom2collegekids, I got a 205. I knew that the cutoff was 218, and when I said that VA was competitive I meant that the cutoff score was quite high. I would have met the cutoff in a few midwest states but that’s about it.

Ahh…

yes, there are a few states where a 205 would make NMSF/F
