Im pretty sure Greek is considered Caucasin but my parents insist it is a URM. They tell me for the ethnicity part of my application to select other and write Greek.

LOL: straw grasping. Sorry but Greek ethnicity won't give any URM boost.

didnt think so

thanks

Greeks are not URM but when college admissions officers are looking
to balance a class what your parents are saying may help.

^ thats interesting

so would it hurt me by marking "other" then writing Greek. I am wondering because I thought Greek was considered Caucasin?

Greek is not an URM. If it were, my Italian children would be checking off "other" and writing that in.

If I were your Admissions Councilor, I would certainly look more carefully at the remaining content of our application if it included something like that that could appear as an attempted manipulation or trick.

Just my $.02.

If you check other and write Greek, you are not being dishonest. The admissions counselor will just read it and think that you didn't realize Greek fell under the Caucasian umbrella. However, you might as well check caucasian.

Both Greeks and Italians suffered discrimination; they were considered minorities until affirmative action was founded in the 60's. This is probably the source of confusion to your parents.

No way. If that was the case, I'd have petitioned to have my half-Lithuanian daughters considered URM's.

Interesting history. I married into an Italian family and I have never known it to be defined as anything other than caucasian.

I guess the main point is "What will be achieved?". "Caucasian" and "Other - Greek" will fall into the same URM category for your application. Keep in mind that in the college application process "asian" is not an URM though in the work force it can be.

See the FAQ thread:

"Parents say Greek is a URM?"

Parents are wrong. End of thread's purpose.

"Parents say Greek is a URM?"

True. Greeks are Under Represented Mediterraneans. :D

im soooo confused so is xiggi or karajanhra right ahhhhhh

jk

but seriously the answers are just going back and forth on whether it would be beneficial to write my ethnicity down as Greek. so would should i mark Caucasian or Other and write Greek?

I'd say Other and write Greek. It's not URM, but there aren't a lot of Greeks around so it could add diversity in a way.

According to wikipedia greeks are included under Caucasian.

According to wikipedia my Physics was the first Pirate and Jedi Master

just saying

John6391 - are you really reading the responses? Up until you made the comment on how you are confused and the responses were "back and forth" here were the summarized results:

T26E4- No
MIT 012 - No
SModa61 - No
Collegealum - neutral, but felt that caucasian was logical and easy
Hindoo - No
Tokenadult - neutral
Karajanhra - no
xiggi - I think was joking

I see the back. I see no forth. It was only after your comment on confusion that got your only vote for "other" by cervantes.

MIT 012 tries to give you the wikipedia definition to help you and you respond with a put down. It is becoming clear you really don't care what the opinions are and you should just do what you are planning to do anyhow. Write your "other greek" because it is obvious that that is what you are hoping to do.

I find it interesting how defensive some users are. The OP is asking an innocent question. In my eyes, I have detected no malice or desire to be "disingenuous." Yet, he still gets responses like the following:

LOL: straw grasping.

If I were your Admissions Councilor, I would certainly look more carefully at the remaining content of our application if it included something like that that could appear as an attempted manipulation or trick.

Will it help? Most likely not. Nevertheless, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with checking Other and writing Greek. Is he lying? No. He just wants to know if it'll help him. When did that become a crime worthy of thought police intervention?

I think calling Greek a URM is nutty. I'm half-Norwegien. That's a nationality, not a race. URM is about race. If your parents want you to gain some kind of advantage, they are stretching the whole point. Have you suffered institutional discrimination because of your race? If not, you are not URM.

I wish I could check "other" and write Irish haha. I don't think that would go over very well with adcoms.
