Parent's view of Susquehanna

When my daughter and I visited (several times) we were very impressed by the friendliness of the people and the beautiful campus. The college is very strong on recruiting and the transition from high school to living away from home at the college. Now that my daughter is in the second year, we have had our eyes opened a bit. Our first indication that things were different was that there was no sign of her RA when she moved into the dorm. And then my daughter didn’t meet her for weeks! Fortunately there was another RA to was very helpful to the girls. She has had some good teachers who really care and know their stuff and a couple others that were horrendous, who really just aren’t kind, tactful, encouraging when students ask questions. She dropped the honors program due to the inconsistency of curriculum between teachers and the lack of regular information on her progress. (My daughter has high grades and is quite aware of what a good teacher/program looks like) She is getting ready to do her semester abroad and that has been another adventure. For something that is required, they should actually have people in the GO office who know what they are doing, respond to students emails and questions, know which programs are actually available and what they are like. Good luck with that. My daughter did her own research because the GO website’s information was not accurate. It took my daughter many times to get help from that office - repeated emails and stopping at the office. The only way she got in was to take someone else’s appointment. I hope that we get information in a timely manner before she has to go. In hindsight I wish she had applied to more schools so she would have had more options. She applied to three and Susquehanna seemed to have everything she wanted. Her financial aid is pretty good but I had no idea they raise tuition and fees over $2000 every year. And I mean every year. That increase doesn’t equal an increase in aid either. Overall, I would say the teachers she has and the classes- in her major- are excellent. Although they apparently only clean up the campus when parents come, I still like how beautiful it is. She really likes the college president; he makes a point of trying to know every single student. For the cost, $53210 for 2015-16 school year…I would like it to be a bit better. She probably could have gotten the same education, with similar areas of disarray, in a less expensive school.
