I am agnostic and my parents a re fundamentalist christians....overall they hate me. I will not be able to afford college apps or college overall. What should I do? my sat(1800) isnt that good and my gpa is 3.7 unweighted. I only passed AP eng lang(4). Community college isn't an option....I want to major in foreign languages and my community college does not offer many courses... the grad rate is about 1%. I also really want to study abroad over summer to advance my spanish....but that is down the drain.....what can I do? are there scholarships for summer programs at crappy college so that I can do something over summer?
my college list:
San Francisco State
Temple
Hunter
UCSB
UCLA
Berkeley
Univ of pitt
Franklin switzerland
BU
GWU
Northeastern
NYU

regarding summer programs in latin america or spain....are there any programs where my grades or an essay can get me a full ride scholarship to study spanish for summer? please help....I am also awaiting sat scores tonight

Look into your financial aid prospects as well as schools that give more need based aid. NYU, for instance is known for not providing a lot of financial aid.

from the list of schools that you posted, not one school there meets 100% demonstrated need. Take all the public schools that are not in the state where you live off of your list because financially you will not be able to make it work

From what the OP posted, his parents will not give him any money for college. He will be REQUIRED to list them on the financial aid forms regardless of this…and this is the case for all schools, even those that meet full need.

To the OP…someone is going to have to pay for you to attend college. You will not be able to be declared independent from your parents for financial aid purposes just because you disagree with them and they say they won’t pay.

You need to look at options for college that will provide you with significant enough merit aid to support your college costs.

Either that or figure out a way to have a peaceful coexistence with your parents.

Or wait until you are 24 years old and ARE independent for financial aid purposes.

OR work part time, and attend community college part time.

It would be helpful to know your state of residence and your expected EFC. Although your parents may not want to pay for college, and certainly aren’t required to, will they cooperate by filling out the FAFSA?

In looking at their posting history, the OP is from CA. I’m not from CA and so don’t know the exact stats needed, but it seems like the UCs listed are out of range as well.

I think you should go to Community College part time, work full time until 24 and transfer to a UC. Otherwise, join the armed forces and get a military scholarship, if you want to.

Is it normal for parents to pay for school? The opinion on this forum seems to be that kids are entitled to having their parents pay for college but I don’t understand why that is.

Is it normal for parents to pay for school? The opinion on this forum seems to be that kids are entitled to having their parents pay for college but I don’t understand why that is.

In general adults on this forum who are parents are interested in college for their children and while they may not pay the full cost- are aware they will probably be paying * something*.

Both my children are attending college, but my parents did not pay for college for myself or any of my siblings, my husband also did not attend college ( & when we asked his parents to buy the grandchildren savings bonds, instead of * expensive & gimmicky* toys, they said " you don’t expect them to attend college, do you?")

It’s great if parents help, but many will/can not, however this site can help students in either circumstance to find options.

So, your parents “hate you, are disowning you, and are refusing to pay for college.” But you still think in terms of “summer programs in latin america or spain.” Hmmm, that seems like a rather large and sudden shift in your lifestyle/situation.

I’m merely one adult reading between the lines, but I think your parents have decided to send you a wake up message, and I doubt that it has anything to do with your agnosticism.

Better try to figure it out, and then make things right with your parents.

I think my college (Fresno City College) offers a language major. In addition, your first few years in college will be spent getting general ed out of the way. Community college is good for that. And many UCs have TAG programs with community colleges, making it much easier to get into a UC.

And I seem to recall there is a process to declare yourself financially independent of your parents for school purposes, but I could be remembering wrong.

Yes, there is a way declaring yourself independent, but you have to have a qualified reason such as court order that you are a ward of the court, or are legally homeless or you were in the military etc. The reason that “my parents do not agree with my views and refuse to pay” will not fly. The government has wised up and the reasons for emancipation for college aid are very narrowly defined and need proof.

If that were not the case, as MisterK points out (and others have in other threads), any family that wants to game the system, could simply refuse to pay for college for any reason “I do not like the length of my child’s hair, his/her attitude…”

^^ Exactly. If disowning stands, every college kid will be disowned by the parents. Who wants to pay college? I certainly don’t, if I had my way.

Yes there is a process…but it does not include “my parents and I disagree and they say they won’t pay for college”. Sorry…that one is not one of the reasons for being declared financially independent.
