<p>Yes, there is a way declaring yourself independent, but you have to have a qualified reason such as court order that you are a ward of the court, or are legally homeless or you were in the military etc. The reason that “my parents do not agree with my views and refuse to pay” will not fly. The government has wised up and the reasons for emancipation for college aid are very narrowly defined and need proof. </p>
<p>If that were not the case, as MisterK points out (and others have in other threads), any family that wants to game the system, could simply refuse to pay for college for any reason “I do not like the length of my child’s hair, his/her attitude…”</p>
