Just wondering if it's best to arrive on Thursday night or Friday during the day? We need to make plane reservations and there is still no schedule of events on the Oberlin website. Do parents actually attend classes? (not sure my D would go for that!)

Yes, parents do attend classes - in our case, mostly things that interested us (not limited to classes in which our student was enrolled) - it was quite interesting and fun. In past parent weekends, there have also been some good lectures on topical (and non-topical) subjects during the day. You won’t lack for things to do; if nothing else, it is nice to walk to the Arb, etc.

bfw611, that’s a shame if your D would not want you to attend her classes. I attended two of my D’s classes last year when she was a freshman, but it was in the middle of the semester not on the Friday of Family Weekend. All my d had to do was let them know in advance that I would be there. I was the only parent in the room in both classes. One was her Freshman Seminar; the other an upper class course in which she was one of only two freshman. She wasn’t the least bit embarrassed. I didn’t make it to Parents Weekend, so I sat in her classes during one of my other visits.

I think sitting in on your D’s classes anytime during freshman year is not unusual. It doesn’t have to be only the Friday of Parents Weekend.

Now that she’s a “big-time” sophomore, my D says she doesn’t want me to sit in on her classes except during Parents Weekend. Funny how things change in a year. :)

Well, my daughter may surprise me–I haven’t asked her about it yet. So I guess it’s best to arrive on Thursday night.
Thanks!
