Parents Weekend questions

It is not far to the beach and it is a pleasant diversion. Being from California and bringing my son's g/f along with his older sister a hotel room is not a good option for us. Too crowded. So last year we rented a house in Lido Beach which cost about 225 a day with 3 bedrooms and we were one block from the beach. Incredible. The price went up a little this year 245.00 but the place is nice, its quite and feels like home away from home. It was only about a 20 - 30 minute drive into KP each day.

The final schedule for PW has been posted on the Academy website.

Last night, a mother asked me what to do with her plebe during Parents Weekend. I told her to let her son/daughter decide. It's their special time, they have been at the academy since the first of July. They are really looking forward to this break time, and have definite ideas what would be great. So let it be what they have been dreaming of doing. Some want to go to the city, for some a beach would be fun, some want to sleep in a motel, some are dreaming of pizza or a steak, and watching TV or going to a movie.

At the end of the weekend, your son/daughter should feel that they did exactly what they wanted to do. This is their time, not a time to entertain Mom , Dad and family. You will ultimately enjoy the time best, if you are giving them their own idea of a good time. If you want to sightsee and they don't want to do that, stay an extra day or two after your midshipmen is back in the school.

Excellent advice KPMOM. Last year our son wanted to go to the City on Saturday night and on Sunday he wanted to spend the day at the beach. Also, last year the Plebes were given extra liberty on Sunday evening, so Mom/Dad/etc...if you can stay late on Sunday it may be something to consider :D

DS would like to go to a comedy club, preferably in NYC. Will this be possible with time allowed? And any recommendations would be very helpful. Can't wait to see S and hopefully will find some of you who have made this journey much easier. Thanks!

You can go where ever you want to on Saturday after the football game. We went to NYC on Saturday nite. I could have lived without it (being from NJ originally), but that's what he wanted. We had some very expensive steaks and lousy service--whatever! He had a blast.

My son went to a comedy club with some other Mids. Let me ask him the name. Most of them (the Mids) get in free if they are in uniform, which your plebe will be :)

Does anybody know if there are any movie theaters in the area around KP?

There is a movie theater in Great Neck, but it's not great and I'm sure you Plebe will want to leave the area. There are a ton of multi-plex theaters around. Let me ask my son and I'll get back to you on that one.

I did some research for my PC's prom night on comedy club. These seemed the best:
Stand-Up NY 212 595-0850
National Comedy Theater 212 629-5202
Laugh Factory 212 586-7829
Comic Strip Live 212 861-9386
HA Comedy Club 212 977-3884
Caroline's 212 757-4100

Some things to consider: Most of the clubs have R rated material, so ask that question if you have younger children with you. Also, the entrance fee is sometimes fairly minimal, but the drinks and snacks are very expensive, which is where they make their money. Also, each club has some good acts and some pretty lame ones. My PC went to Stand-up NY with 50 kids on prom night and they took good care of them and were up front with the costs. Good luck and have fun!!

SuzanneGra is probably right about the movie theater...

However, for PCs who have had NO freedom at all for months....
My PC last year , and a group from his company, were all giddy with excitement about being able to PICK a REAL ice cream in a waffle cone, CHOOSE to SEE A MOVIE, and DECIDE to get (sniff, sniff, ahhhhh!) REAL popcorn or other concession-stand treats. You'd have thought they were visiting royalty staying at The Plaza.

Transportation to the multiplex would have been problematic, I guess. But downtown Great Neck is just a short busride away.

Hey parents, you can get a multiride bus ticket from the machine at the train station... It was $20, and had a good number of rides back/forth.. It's a nice thing to get your newly-minted Plebe.

but, if you have a car it's is much easier :) My son said the theater he goes to a lot is in Bayside (you can ride the LIR there) and get off in Bayside stop and walk to the theaters. Or if driving you go up Northern Blvd towards the Throgs Neck Bridge and turn right on Bell Blvd. Go about 3-4 miles up the road and you are there.

A good friend of mine grew up very close to USMMA and she recommended some restaurants for breakfast. 1) Nick's, Old Village - Great Neck, 2) The Bagel Mensch, between old and New Village, Great Neck, 3) Frederick's, near Great Neck Trans. Station. Bond St/Grace St.

Thank you all very much, looking forward to meeting many of you next weekend.

I've got a question about picnicking for lunch on Saturday. I suggested it to my d and she replied that it was a pain to be excused and it is easier to just do what's normal. I understand her desire to not attract notice. But is it an issue for this weekend? I know that she would love to escape Delano food if it wasn't going to be difficult for her.

KPMOM2012

I don't thing anyone would really notice. Your d resistance might also be because she would really like for you to experience Delano. I really think my PC enjoyed having us see what Delano was like. Actually the food was not bad last year.

Experience Delano... live through what they live through... it was fun waiting in line with our PC & having him tell us where to go & what to do... the subtle nods to friends & the banter they exchanged in line... would not have missed it for a moment.... when they did the BBQ for dinner, we all waited in line & then took our food down to the yacht club & had a great "cold" dinner on the waterfront... we loved every minute of it!

This year our MIDN requested that we not come back for parents weekend... to quote him..."too much going on & I really won't have that much time with you, can you come back in Oct. before I ship out?" Our reply, "You betcha' son, we'll be there in Oct." So it's Oct. for us... kinda sad that we miss parents weekend, but really happy that we can get him for 2.5 days! :)

Oh, we already planned to have Friday night dinner in Delano. (Though at the time we were purchasing the tickets, d told us NOT to do it.) And we have reserved tickets for lunch as well. I just thought that after all of her complaints, we'd offer another option and was surprised at how she refused it. We'll see how it goes on the day. Semper gumby!

My father who is going to Parents weekend (he is a 1959 alum) would like to go to Beat Retreat but did not purchase tickets. Can we purchase them when we arrive?

Yes, go to Wiley Hall, they'll have them on sale there.
