I'm a freshman parent.
There is Dad's weekend and mom's weekend, but is there a "parent's weekend" (usually in Oct or Nov)?
Is Dad's weekend not for mom?

Not aware of a Parent’s weekend. Dad’s weekend with football game is in November. Mom’s weekend is in April.

I am a freshman parent as well. I have visited him twice already and will probably go back next month. I think with my DS, he needs extra help especially without a car on campus.

No particular “parents” weekend. Also if you have any intent of going to Dad’s weekend (Nov) or Mom’s (Apr) it would be wise for you to check immediately for available hotel rooms.

Dad’s and Mom’s weekends are the officially sponsered weekends at uiuc as Drusba states. If you want to support your son/daughter, any weekend is parent’s weekend as long as he/she’s up for your visit. I personally don’t like the congestion, or the scheduled events, so my wife and I work it out with my son, and we visit him, usually taking his friends and him to dinner. The dinner tops dorm food, or Dominos Pizza delivery after midnight, so we’ve got several kids that we treat. I, of course, also point out that his mom and I eat gruel when we’re not taking him out to dinner, due to the high cost of college. That also, of course, has no visible impact, but it makes me feel better from a “know my angst” perspective.

The sponsered events are very popular, and I encourage you to try them, if you can solidify plans well in advance, but they just aren’t my thing.
