All you Cornell kids: Apparently all the ED kids rushed to book the Statler for the start of school and so my mom wants to be able to have a room for family weekend or w/e its called. Do most parents come for that or do they not have to come?

Parents don't have to come for parents, mine didn't, as we found it unnecessary, since I'd be home for fall break. It's a personal preference, really, but plenty of parents don't come.

Aright, cool.

Most freshmen parents come. Your mom will feel bad if she doesn't come. There are plenty of other hotels. Book a room before regular decision comes out.

Many parents come. There are plenty of hotels, but if your parents want reservations for any peak weekends next year, especially at the statler, which is incredibly convenient to everything Cornell, they should book them now. They should also book for your graduation ASAP...not joking.

book for graduation??? thats crazy

Yea, book now, he's right. My parents booked when I got in, the hotels fill up quickly.

Why would her parents feel bad for not coming? My parents and I discussed it and concluded that it was pretty pointless.

well, 3000+ immediate families, relative families, and friends, all of whom wanting to get a room on the same few nights. You can imagine why people book so far in advance.

Yea..October break is so close to the family weekend. What's the point of them coming?

I guess some people get home sick...maybe to ease the adjustment...I don't know. I just thought it was a waste of time and money on a hotel room. Then again, I've been away from home for a longer time than that many times before.

Having them come is nice. It's not necessarily about homesickness. I, for one, don't get homesick, and had no social or emotional adjustment problems at cornell. It's nice for them to come up and see how you are living at college. If you see them 2 weekends later on fall break, that's cool, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't see them right before. It's also fun to go around campus and show your parents all the cool things at cornell.

I showed my parents some "secrets" and special places, like the AD white lib, my computer lab, the top of mcgraw tower, the musical paving stones, the botanical garden, the gorges, the cocktail lounge, the practice rooms in lincoln, and lynah rink/a hockey game among other things. But yeah, your choice...theres no need to book now, just don't wait until deep into the academic year to book.

Yeah, I guess it would be fun to show the rents around. I don't get homesick either, but I'm sure some people must. Like I said, it's all about personal preference. It was an inconvenience for my parents, since they work on weekends, so they didn't come after making sure I didn't care and after we mutually agreed that it had no point, for us.

yeah that makes perfect sense. I just didn't want '10ers to think parents weekend was pointless or unpopular.

Haha, my bad, wouldn't want to single-handedly ruin parents weekend 2010.

you bit*h! heheh

oh no you didn't! ;)

wow, I procrastinate my showers and my social life as well, thank you cc.

Cornell Mom here! Parents do like to come for parent week-end. But you gotta book a room soon if you want to stay in in Ithaca. Remember it is only freshmen Parent week-end so you do not have to endure this with your parents all 4 years. So indulge them for this one year and encourage them to come. There are not enough hotel rooms in Ithaca to accommodate all of the undergrad parents so they really gear the week-end to freshmen parents only. And it's no joke about booking a room for graduation. When in Ithaca for freshmen orientation (end of August) some hotels will have pre-reservation forms ready. I know we had to send the form back by October with deposit. Not all the hotels take reservations at that time, but a number of them do. Also- it is none to soon to make reservations for parents for freshmen orientation. Trust me, the hotel rooms for that week-end will be snapped up real soon too. Congrats to all. My d loves Cornell.

I made my hotel reservations for orientation when S got his likely letter before thanksgiving. And lots of places were already booked. Many of them have a three night minimum.

Marny:
What hotel did you book for graduation?
What other options do you recommend for graduation?
Any advice would be appreciated.

We're going to stay at the Ramada. I believe the Clarion also takes reservations 4 years before graduation. (sick- ain't it.) Both hotels are near Triphammer Rd. near the Pyramid Mall. Also in that area is the Courtyard by Marriott. I like that hotel better, as it is newer. They have a lottery 1 year before graduation, so at least for the class of 2008, we couldn't reserve at time of freshmen orientation. We like to stay in that part of Ithaca, as once you know the back roads, it's easy to get on and off the Cornell campus. Some newer hotels is a Hilton in Ithaca Commons area and a Hampton Inn which is closer to Ithaca college area. If all else fails in securing a room for graduation, I believe Cornell has a lottery for dorm space in February or March prior to graduation. Remember all students except graduating seniors leave the campus about a week before graduation. So there are a lot of dorm rooms which open up. We decided that if other family members come up for graduation, (aunts-uncles etc), we may go that route, but we at least wanted to know that we had 1 room in Ithaca for graduation. From what I have heard, the hotel rates could be as high as $300/nite. For other special week-ends like parents week-end or orientation. you'll probably pay close to $150. If you just go up on a regular week-end, the cost is under $100 nite at places like Super 8 which is also closer to Ithaca College. I believe there is a listing of all the hotels on the Cornell website. You have to go to the section-Visiting Cornell and it links you to Tompkins County info.
