I was wondering if anyone had any insight on whether Parent's Weekend is worth making the trip to UP, spending money on a hotel, etc...

Thanks.

It really is not much different than visiting any other weekend but with some parent activities. We went my son freshman’s year but didn’t after. We just felt we should be there his first year, but now we prefer to go when we want and when it is a lot less busy.

We were in a situation where we had visited PSU several times before S became a student, so we were quite familiar with the university and never felt the necessity to attend Parents’ Weekend. Freshman year, S preferred to come home for that weekend. Sophomore and Junior year, he just stayed on campus and did his own thing. This year will most likely be the same.

Like mrtagr, we tend to visit on non-event weekends when he isn’t too busy or on weekends when he has a home competition (he’s an athlete in a non-revenue sport). We have found that we actually get to spend more time with him this way. It is also cheaper to get a hotel room and a bit easier to get into restaurants.

We attended Parents’ Weekend during both our boys’ freshman years. With our older son, who was not at PSU, we particularly appreciated meeting the parents/families of his suitemates, which would not have happened on another weekend. We had dinner together, emailed photos and generally kept in touch after the weekend. The boys remained close and we got together whenever everyone was in town, right up to commencement in June, when we attended all the activities together.

I also have not visited on Parents’ Weekend since D’s freshman year. In fact, last year (her sophomore year) she specifically told me NOT to come, that it was basically only attended by freshmen parents.

My parents came last year and they had a great time. They had a few handles with some other parents that attended and really enjoyed the college weekend experience! Don’t think you can get into the Nittany Lion Inn but there are other places to stay.

Did not visit parents weekend. Many of sons friends parents got rooms early and were excited and prepared to go. At the last minute all those kids decided to come home for the weekend instead.

Try to find a non football weekend to go unless d really is set on you coming parents weekend. You will have a great time.
