Parents Weekend

Hi to all of the Parents of current Cal Poly SLO students!

Are you going this weekend to Parents Weekend? My family and I are heading down on Saturday after our daughter’s Irish dancing feis. We will be there for the BBQ and football game and then hang around on Sunday for lunch and visiting before we head home. I can’t wait to see our son and the other students and families.

If you are going…have a wonderful time!

We are going and are all looking forward to it. D is especially excited to see her brother. Has the whole weekend planned for him…hmmm… hope there is some time for H and I!

We had a “Daughters’ Weekend”. My husband had to work, so I took my grown twin daughters down to SLO. We spent Friday and Saturday night. We spent some time in downtown SLO before picking my daughter up at Poly and driving the half hour to Cayucos. We stopped by my grandmother’s gravesite at the little cemetary and headed to our Swiss-Italian cousins’ cattle/avocado ranch in Cayucos. They’re almost 90 and you would never know it! Very energetic and healthy. Three of their grown kids went to Cal Poly. We had a home-cooked meal and really enjoyed their wonderful, old farmhouse which has been in the family since the late 1800s. They invited my daughter and her Cal Poly buddies to come visit anytime!

We drove back to SLO around 8 pm and went up to my daughter’s room in Yosemite. She needed help with her Halloween costume, so her sisters were great with that. I sat out in the little lounge outside the dorm rooms and talked to some of her dorm mates. All great kids! I recognized most of them from her Facebook photos. It really is like a big family!

Saturday morning we picked my daughter up again (actually one of her twin sisters was still running. She’s training for a marathon.) We went down to Beverly Fabrics and Ross for costume-stuff. Picked her sister up at the hotel and headed back to her dorm to work on the costume. One daughter and I walked over to the bookstore and around campus. Then we all headed over to O’Neill Green for the Tailgate BBQ. The weather was decent, too! Then we found our seats in the bleachers and watched the game. It was packed. My daughter sat with her friends in the student section. She stood up so we could see her and even took her over something to munch on. They had some green and gold paint on their faces and some tie-dyed shirts they had made for the game. She said Zac Efron was there in the ‘suite seats’. His brother is a freshman there. And, of course they were raised in the area. Anyway, we were thrilled that the Mustangs won! And, even more excited about the Giants’ big win! It was an awesome night for West coast teams! My daughter went out afterward with her friends and we headed back to the hotel. My other daughter had to be up at 6:30 am to run 12 miles.

Sunday morning after picking up my daughter at her dorm, we headed to the shopping center out on Madonna Rd. She bought some clothes at Forever 21, a few things at the Dollar Tree and some milk at Ralph’s. I had bought her boxes of cereal, juice and detergent and some warm sweaters, coats and scarves she wanted from home.

We then ate lunch at Splash Cafe. We headed back to her dorm room and her sisters helped her finish her costume. I was getting a little antsy about driving home since it was raining and I wanted to be home before dark. We left at 3:30 and it rained most of the way home. But, thankfully everyone drove safer and slower on the Cuesta Pass! I’m not fond of that stretch of highway.

So, that was our weekend! My husband said he had “OoVooed” (like Skype) with her for awhile before we got home. She told him about our visit. He’ll get to see her when he picks her up on November 10. She’s flying to Oregon for the long weekend to see her friend who is a freshman at University of Oregon.

Sounds like a busy and fun weekend with your family and especially your CP daughter.
I am so happy for all of you to have such a great time together!

We went down to visit our son on Saturday afternoon and stayed until 3:30 on Sunday. We went to the BBQ and then the game as well. It was a very exciting game and we all loved to cheer on the Mustangs and the Giants! I had know idea that Zac Efron was there and that his brother is a freshman. That is exciting! I doubt my son cares, but his 8 year old sister would have loved to see him!

After the game, we went back to his dorm and then headed to Taco Bell for a late night snack and then over to the room across the hall for a game of Scrabble with the fun girls and their family.

The next morning we did some shopping at Best Buy and then went to lunch at Woodstock’s Pizza (Firestone was way too crowded). Then we met his friends at the pumpkin patch/farm on the way to Avila Beach. It was soooo muddy and wet! He picked out a great pumpkin for carving. They are having a mini contest at his dorm.

After cleaning up at his dorm, we were on our way home. Now we are looking forward to Thanksgiving Break! It is great to see the students settling in at CP and really enjoying it there. It is easier to leave our son when we know he is having a good time and getting a good education.
