Parents who just don't want to let go

Hey, how do you guys deal with parents that never want you to leave?

I'm gonna be a junior next year, and my Dad keeps going on and on about how great UCLA is and how he won't support me if I don't go to UCLA or USC or some other nearby college. He works overseas so I only see him twice a year for about 2 weeks at a time. So I don't spend much time with him, and he says that he wants me to go to UCLA because he might be living in California with my Mom again by then, and he wants to spend more time with him when I'm in college. I love my parents, but I want to get away and be independent. I'm not saying I want to ditch them, I just want to try going to another part of the country.

My parents would also like for me to go to a nearby college (which is in my case…Stanford…um yea…sorry mom and dad…). But they’ve said that they would totally support me if I decided on an out of state school. If they understand how hard you’ve been working and how much you want it, I’m sure they’ll find it in them to let you go. Maybe you could go on college visits with your parents?

yea my parents want me to stay on the east coast but they have sheltered me so much…I want to venture out to like california
