Parents, will my math/science scores kill me?

I have always been a student of the humanities. I have great grades and AP scores in those areas.

(800 Verbal, 800 Literature, 800 Writing, 800 World History, 800 French; 5 Eng Lang, 5 Eng Lit, 5 US History, 5 World History, 5 French Lang, 5 French Lit, 5 Art History. I even took the GRE Literature subject test and got a 750, which is in the 99th percentile for college graduates ). However, my math and science skills are SEVERLY lacking (610 Math, B's and even 2 C's in my math/science classes, I also only got a 1 on the AP bio exam). I only took math up to Algebra 2, and am trying to take AP Probability and Stat this year as a challenge, and am hanging onto a B. My class rank is only 39th out of 800, mostly because my math and science grades bring me down. Still, I tried for Swarthmore, Yale, UChicago, Amherst, Wesleyan, and Brown among my reaches, and Reed as a match. Assuming my essays are great and I show a general passion for my area of interest, do you think I have a chance at some of those schools?

Any idea? Please?

Yup. Which UChicago essay did you pick?

Child you are what we call in the South "whop-sided" - I'm teasing, OK. Yes I think you have a chance. Good to see you have a larger number of "reaches" some of which may be less of a reach than you think, because your profile is a little unusual, at least for computer posters. I would think that given your verbal bent, the secret will be to match up with a school where they need a few more humanities majors today, and having all those extra schools should increase the chance of getting in at least one. You sound like a great Chicago person, but I hope you hit on Brown or Amherst, so you can kiss that nasty math and science good-by! Good luck to you!

I don't know, I think whop-sided is a nice compliment in this case!

Thank you. I know, unfortunately my humanities background isn't exactly needed. And Ohio mom, I picked the Chicago essay on language.

It's strange, one of my best friends has almost the exact same breakdown but in reverse..800 Math, 630 Verbal, with all very high SAT II and AP exam scores in math/science. He doesn't know how I do it, and I don't know how he does it!

The language one was hard - my son did the Teleclone. I think the selection will help you - almost everyone else seems to have done mustard. I'll bet the adcoms are avoiding mustard around now.

A background such as yours could be 'needed' in areas regarding communications and exchange of ideas: teaching, diplomacy, research - many other areas. Just look at the disaster people - and nations - get involved in when people are clueless. The world probably doesn't know it needs humanities, but it does. Be of good courage.

The Teleclone essay, to me, was the hardest, but most interesting prompt. Thank you for your kind words!

Wow, don't sell yourself short. That is the most impressive set of humanities qualifications I have seen. Many Ph. D candidates don't even get close to a 750 GRE Lit. I think you have a great chance.

Of course your math scores won't kill you. At worst, they'll lead you to one great school in lieu of another.

It's something of a waste of talent to be great at absolutely everything; people are expected to specialize academically and professionally at some point in their lives.

Yea...it's just my guidance counselor told me my rank and 2C's would kill my chances at top ivies and LACs

This isn't worth anything, but if I was sitting on an adcom, I'd pick a student like you over a perfect scorer. I see all these posts with phenomenally high scorers and just think they've learned how to beat the test. Your one-sidedness is a plus in my eye. especially the fact that you've perservered and are taking AP Probability and Statistics. I have no idea how an Ivy or top LAC would view you though. Good luck.

Ulysses,

Why should you fare any worse than a student who scored 700, 710? 1410 is right at median at most of these schools. Furthermore, your humanities grades & scores are truly exceptional, and you class rank is excellent, top 5%. You are a great candidate.

BTW I am unbalanced to the english/humanities side, like you, and I have a good friend like your friend who is a math genius; she runs a high-tech company. We joke that, together, we are one person. :)

Keep us posted as to your acceptances. I bet you'll be fine!
