BTW, we have friends whose S is in CS at UT Austin and his experience has not been the best. Really bright kid but barely made it last semester. The classes are huge and very impersonal. Couldn’t get into some of his necessary classes because registration closed and it’s going to take longer than 4yrs. Another kid who my S graduated with on the other hand has been doing well but also went through a rough time there. His problem was that he didn’t realize the CS would be so theory based. Good luck OP. My D has also applied to some on your list- Emory and WUSTL. She is auto admit to UT Austin but still unsure about applying.
@s16s18s21s25 Yeah, I just hope majoring in CS doesn’t destroy my gpa, which would result in destroying my chances for law school. The reason I am trying am concerned with where I do it is because that could also vary the difficulty quite a bit (General ed reqs to pad GPA, not as math intensive, grade inflation, etc)
@goingnutsmom Yes, I agree. It would definitely drive up the LSAT score a bit. IS? What is that? Yes I know, that is why UT is my LAST LAST LAST Option. Good luck to your daughter with WUSTL and Emory, wish my parents were like you, maybe actually would help out more instead of sabotaging me based on faulty info.
@mom2collegekids Yes, i intend to use my CS knowledge to develop apps and web projects on the side of a law career. Couldn’t imagine having an office CS job where you just sit and code away for hours, getting paid by the hour for work that could potentially land your employer millions.
@yellowgranite56 Yes, I need to add schools like this. The plus is they don’t take a slot on my commonapp as well…
You say your dad wants to “see the finances” – just print out the tuition, room & board, & fees page from each school, and tell him that this is the price if he won’t fill out the paperwork. Nothing will steam your GC and the college more than if you don’t get materials in for FA at Emory, they accept you ED II, and the you try to back out because it is unaffordable. The unaffordable option is only for students who applied for FA – everyone can see the full price to start with. You risk your high school’s reputation and the cooperation of your GC for the rest of your apps if you pull a stunt like that.
@intparent Yeah, I’ve accepted WashU will defer me at BEST for ED. I applied for the scholars program at Emory, but the thing he is right about is at Emory CSS isn’t need for merit. And CSS won’t get you loans, just grants, which after they see the info and the FAFSA for this year I won’t get a dime in need based aid. So I don’t know what to do, obviously if your parents have enough to disqualify you for aid, they have enough to help you if you are willing to work, get loans, work study, take a working gap year deferment in the middle, etc… And at the time of submission of the ED apps he was more cooperative, so this is not on purpose.
Are you competitive for merit at Emory? If you look at the Common Data Set and see what % of the student body gets non-need based aid, are you in that percentage of the top of last year’s accepted class? If you aren’t really competitive for merit and your dad won’t pay full fare for Emory, you are still playing a bait and switch game with ED.
You can get a job on most colleges, but unless you have financial need, you will not be eligible for work study.
