Parents Won't Help...?

Hi,
My parents are the type of parents that do things that are only convenient for themselves. Because of this, I have to be independent; I have to work in order to buy myself the things I want and need. In August I was supposed to do college visits in New York, but now I can't go because I don't have enough money and my parents won't spare a dime. I really wanted to visit schools before I applied to them. What should I do? When is another good time to visit colleges?

Thank you for your time

Maybe see if you can tag along with friends on their college visits. Worst case, you can visit the schools you got accepted to in April.

HeyUmYeah,
I agree with QandAorBust. Ask your friends to see if they can help. Take control of your own education. Save some money on application fees, do what you must to visit the colleges before you apply. You will be saving a lot of money by applying to only the schools that will fit you best. Trust me. If money is an issue, don’t waste your money applying to reach schools, apply only to match and safety schools that you can afford. Get the best value for your money. If you are unable to visit in person, check to see if the schools have a video tour of their campus online, or have them send you a copy. Find out who is your admission counselor and communicate with him or her to get your information. They are usually more than happy to help. Perhaps you can find some friendly folks who will be helpful and answer any questions you may have about that particular school through that school’s forum on cc. Best of luck!

There are several threads on this topic both here and in the Parents Forum. You may find useful ideas in them. Look for titles like “How necessary are college visits?” This one is only a couple of weeks old: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1175782-my-father-will-not-let-me-visit-colleges.html</a></p>

However, not being able to visit is the least of your problems if your parents “won’t spare a dime”. How much are they going to give you to pay for your education? You need to sit down with them in a non-confrontational manner, and find out just exactly how much money will be available. If you are going to have to pay for your education yourself, you need to know that now. For advice on that topic, visit the Financial Aid Forum.

Good luck with everything!

^ Excellent Post!

In August I was supposed to do college visits in New York, but now I can’t go because I don’t have enough money and my parents won’t spare a dime.

I think you need to save your money to PAY for college.

All these visits may be for naught if your parents aren’t going to pay for college. You may end up having to commute to a local school if your parents won’t pay.

Will your parents fill out the financial aid forms? How will the EFC get paid?

How will you pay for college?

You’re from the Midwest…

*I’m going to re-take the ACT in September. Should I take the ACT plus writing? On my first ACT I got a 32 in English, 30 in Reading, a 25 in Science, and a 17 in Math. I know I definitely have to bring up my math score. *

You have a 26 ACT…that’s not going to get you much/any merit scholarships or get your great FA packages.

What schools are you considering?

What schools are within commuting distance to your home?

Well, I plan on re-taking the ACT, and I have a 3.57 GPA and over 600 hours of volunteer work. I was definitely planning on trying to get a full ride at Baruch. My parents said that they will help with housing and living expenses, but after I graduate from college, the rest of the bill is mine.

I was definitely planning on trying to get a full ride at Baruch.

Do you mean like Macaulay honors at Baruch? If so, what kind of scores would you need for that?

*My parents said that they will help with housing and living expenses, but after I graduate from college, the rest of the bill is mine. *

What does that mean? Will they give you $8k per year for room and board? If not, how much will they pay?

And what do you mean by “after I graduate” the bill will be yours? What bill?

There are two honors programs at Baruch. I’m gunning for Macaulay, it’s really selective, but if I don’t get in there’s Baruch honors as well. Room and board is $10K, and I think my mom meant that any debt I have after college I have to pay on my own.

What scholarships are available for OOS students in regular honors?

What stats are needed?
