I know this seems like a trivial topic in the midst of all this college stress, but my parents had given me permission to attend my ex-boyfriend's and now very good friend's prom a few states away. I had figured out the cost of the train ticket and all the logistics, then out of the blue they decided they weren't comfortable with it and I can't go. I hate to sound like a whiny teenager, but I've worked so hard throughout high school to gain their trust and respect, I've never had bad friends or done anything to put myself in a dangerous or compromising position. So what makes now any different? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get them to see that I'm capable of making this decision rationally on my own?

I really don't blame them. When I first saw this, I thought that maybe your friend was a couple of towns over from yours. A couple of states is a little extreme. Besides, you'll enjoy your own prom better than you would enjoy his. If you can go to your own prom, this shouldn't be an issue. Choose your battles wisely.

^ he's right.

Why cant the OP go to both proms? I doubt they are on the same night.

alright, this is what you do:
1. Tell your parents you are going to study all night and to leave you alone.
2. Make a lifesized figure of yourself out of household items and put it in your bed.
3. Anchor your bedsheet down and use it to crawl out of the window.
4. Go to the prom.
5. Come back get back into bed.
6. ???
7. profit!!!

^^ haha
if i were ur parents, id have the same issue too. when i first read the title, i thought u meant that ur friend's prom wasn't too far away, but a few states away is a lot. its not about the trust factor here. ur parents do trust u, its just they care about ur safety. although he is ur good friend, u probabl shouldnt go. besides, i think u would have fun going to ur own prom anyway.
is it really worth it to spend so much money and effort to go there anyway?

haha, you actually phrased it really funny.

"he's only a few states across!"
