Parents writing essays for me what should I do?

For the UC's and perhaps many essays to come, my dad is writing things for me that he “thinks” will be good for admission that is completely not who I am and, to be honest, a total lump of -. He says he will not pay for the admission if I don’t base my essays around his. What should I do?

community college is not bad

...........Not quite the answer I was looking for since my dad will probably * out.

Your dad has some serious issues.

You could write 2 essays. Show him the one he'll like, then put the OTHER one in the application envelope.

Or you could try to arrange a meeting with your dad and your Guidance Counselor. Maybe the GC could talk some sense into him.

Secretly write a second set of essays that represents the true you, and submit online if the UC system allows it. If not, then do what Lafalum84 said.

Send your essay and your dad's essay to your counselor or English teacher and ask for an honest review.

tell him I wrote my essay about a girl I had a crush on during a summer program (of course I didn't mention the crush part) and I got into JHU and Swarthmore.

(actually that probably won't help that much, since I got rejected from nearly anywhere else)

Guess what? An experienced reader can tell the difference between an essay written by a 17 year old and one written by a 50-ish old man who thinks he knows what the reader wants to hear.

Would you like to be rejected based on something you didn't even write?

OK, then, time to grow up. What your dad is proposing is against the rules. Every time he mentions it, repeat that back to him like a broken record. Prepare for him to behave like a real jerk.

It is your application and you are responsible for its contents.

Man, if I had a visa card................(or credit card #).............

go sign up for a debit card at a bank near where u live. u can use debit cards for the application. pay for it yourself and apply where u want.

It takes a whlie for the debit card to send.

Just stand up against your dad, and get over his threats. It's your future, not his, and since he does care about your future, you can throw down the gauntlet and say you won't send in any UC app unless it has the essays you want.

I think Amex has cash cards or something.. they sell them at Safeway, etc. I'm pretty sure you can use them as normal debit cards (they come in $25, $50, etc.), since they are American Express and all.

Hope you get the chance to write what you want!

This is solid, though I'd probably pick counselor, because an English teacher, while more available, is a moron if he/she cannot pick out your paper among many, while the counselor has no idea how you write.

Even better, send it to a friend or something, and demand honest feedback.

I would recommend lying, but know that you have a very, very high chance of being rejected if you try to send in your dad's essays.

stand up to your dad.

Ask your father this: "If I use my essay, and it's not what admissions wants to hear, then I won't get in and you won't have to pay. If I use my essay, and I do get in, then it was clearly what admissions wanted to hear and wasn't that the whole point? So once I get in, what does it matter which essay I used?"

This is pretty distressing, and surreptitiously sending your own essay is not a solution. If you can't get your GC involved, find another adult (English teacher, friend of parent, there must be someone?) to let him know what others have said--admissions counselors can tell a 50-year old voice from a teenager.

do you have an asian parent? if so, be rebellious

my only advice is to switch his and your essay
its the easiest way out
or rebel him, or convince him, or threat him
do what you think is best for you

or tell him it'll get you thrown out of the school if anyone ever finds out...or you know....it's illegal in some states....

It's fraudulent in ALL states.

Buy a money order to pay for each application. Simple to get -- go to the US post office or a 7-11-type store. Most grocery stores also sell money orders.

Good luck!
