Recently, I have been pushed into a position where I am forced to get a car (problem with parents driving their car, ect...)

Although its not 100% I will be getting it next week, it seems likely. Should I get this car, which we don't have space at my house to leave, are there parking spaces available in the Pittsburgh area for rent? Like, pay a monthly fee for car parking? "/

I have heard parking is expensive. Also, they give you a free bus pass which is very useful and can get you anywhere so you don't really need a car on campus.

Our campus is very connected and you do not need a car at all. There are fields everywhere connecting campuses so I can't even see how a car would help you.

Morewood has a huge parking lot with empty spaces (you can probably get away with parking in it for free or around the shops on Forbes). Since you have to live in Freshman dorms and it is like a 5-10 min walk to classes (in between is all fields) there is NO reason to have a car at all.

Honestly you can just be smart and park it around Forbes and move it every weekend or so (so ppl don't get suspicious) :) You can also leech off the U.Pitt campus since they are our slaves (j/k, but not really :))

its most likely going to be a hummer (I hardly get a say in what car I get, should I get one... <_<)... so I think that will be suspicious enough... but is there any parking around the area that runs below 60? 60 a month would make me cry at night in pain (no not really..)

But I am curious about any other options... Thanks for the 'secret' options Accepted :) Havent heard those answers from anyone else yet

My brother had his car stolen THREE times from the north oakland area and it wasn't even a very nice car! And if theft isn't a problem, scratches and dings will be. If you must have a car in oakland, get a small one so you can squeeze into every tiny parallel parking spot. Parking in the oakland area is just terrible and public transportation is quite good. If I were you, I would store my car at home, perhaps in a borrowed or rented storage space, or just sell it and buy one when you graduate.

the only free parking street I can think of near campus is Margaret Morrison Street, I'm not sure of that name but it's the street on the western edge of campus...Donner is on it. Parking's tight there so if you drive your car you probably won't get a spot there when you return. You could find free parking towards Pitt but even that isn't easy.

The problem is...in Shadyside and Oakland the residents have these stickers on their car so if you live off campus there you get a sticker and you're OK. But if you're in a dorm, no sticker. You'll be jockeying your car all the time. And getting a ticket every day.

I can't begin to tell you the number of tickets my son got. Both Univ and Shadyside/Oakland. I think $20 CMU tickets if you pay in 3 or 5 days, then goes up to $40. City tickets I can't remember but I think $30-40 each. So you would do better to find a private garage, but I'm guessing it's >60/month. And they're ALWAYS out ticketing, don't think you can outmaneuver them.

Eventually S got fraternity parking sticker and that was OK...till you can get a U sticker, I'd say go with the garage.

btw...you're getting a Hummer and worrying about 60-100/month??:)

Edit: I cross posted with lkf. I agree it's a nightmare parking in the U area and in our case the cost of the tickets was ridiculous (he also had one accident and MANY dings). If there's any way you can get a Univ sticker, get one but I doubt if freshman can. Best option: leave it at home till you can get a U sticker or Shadyside/Oakland sticker.

My d is in Donner and there are parking meters along her stretch of Margaret Morrison. I come with lots of quarters when I visit, IF I can find a spot, (normally not) And the food trucks are further down taking up more spaces.
If your parents can't bring you, take a plane, lots of kids fly in. There is a bus to the airport or taxi service.
