How does parking work at Berkeley? Do most freshman bring cars?

No, few frehsman bring cars. Most people I know who have cars have a hous or apartment or pay someone with an extra spot money monthly for the spot. A car is rarely necessary, and public transportation is good within Berkeley, to and in SF, and to a good extent around the Bay Area.

Parking blows. Esp temporary parking. My mom got money conned by a guy who told her to pay him and so not only did we lose 10 dollars, she got a parking ticket for not paying money to the real parking machine.

Parking is close to impossible at Berkeley. Part of the fun is learning Berkeley with your dormmates and the last thing you want to be is the DD wherever you go. Permits are rarely given out, and only under special circumstances (ie, handicaps). Permits for the campus parking structures are only available if you can provide proof that you live more than 2 miles away from campus. Yes, Clark Kerr is a long walk but it's nowhere close to 2 miles. Plus, Cal routinely oversells its parking permits so a permit doesn't guarantee a spot. Don't worry, you might end up being in the best shape of your life (especially if you hike up to Foothill every day).

What's the distance to CKC, 1.5 miles? At least 1.

I believe it counts from your address to the edge of campus. So about 0.5 miles at best. Probably less from the closest corner of Clark Kerr to Bancroft / Piedmont.

Yeah, it's only about 6 blocks from I-House. A bike is the best option.

Bring your car next year, when you move out of the dorms. You can get street permit. You'll use your car for weekend fun and occasional late-night outings for food and fun.

parking was scarce when I was on campus
