My son has been accepted to Pitt and intends to take a car his freshman year. While we realize that having a car is not a necessity as there are many, many transportation opportunities to get around...we are probably going to allow this for the purpose of him coming home when he needs to. The car will probably sit unused except for weekends and holidays. I understand that parking at Pitt is at a premium...if by chance he gets housed at the towers...where is closest parking? Is it really $100 per month? Indoor / outdoor, etc. etcc?

I believe most freshmen will get the OC lot which is a hike up a steep hill. It is very expensive. If there are other options to getting home, I would consider them as a car is not needed otherwise.

I agree with SEmom. Plus: IMHO - if you live close enough for an 18 year old to drive home, then you live close enough to easily pick him up once or twice a month for less than what monthly parking in Oakland costs. Keep in mind that if your son has a car, when almost everybody else does not, he will constantly be bugged to lend his car, give somebody a ride, or pick someone up. Definitely not worth that risk/pressure in my opinion.

This says that parking is $680 a semester for outdoors and $736 a semester for a garage.

Correct! And as southeastmom said, parking is way up the hill in the OC lot. If you are lucky enough to be one of about 20 people to park under Towers, than MAYBE you will be parking closer to your dorm.

Also, if you are an engineer living in Forbes Hall, the parking is in a little allyway parking lot (outdoors) behind it. Cost is all the same. (Except for the above mentioned difference in indoor/outdoor)

Don’t bring a car. Bad idea.
