I'm moving into an apartment in a couple weeks, and I don't want to buy a parking spot in my complex's garage because it's too expensive ($150/month!) Having a car up in Berkeley would only be a luxury for me, so it's not a huge deal. But if I could find a cheap way of having it there, that'd be nice.

I just looked at the city of Berkeley's parking permit website, which says that a permit is $30/year. Does anyone here have a permit? Is it safe to keep my car parked on the streets all the time? I lived at Clark Kerr this last year and I remember that two cars had their windows bashed in on Dwight. If anyone here has had (or heard) about unsavory experiences like that, please share. If so, is there perhaps a safer parking structure that's cheaper that I could consider (I'm living near Oxford and University, the west entrance of campus.)

Any other car/parking stories are appreciated, so I can get a general sense of what my situation could be. Thanks.
